to ask what £300k would buy where you live?

callingtimethistime · 17/08/2021 16:11

And do you like living there? If not, where would you rather be?

WIBU to consider moving there with my DC?

(This is part idle speculation, part deadly serious as going through separation and I've never liked the the town we currently live in. It doesn't have much to offer older DC, plus the secondaries aren't great here. Wondering where we might all have a better life... )

This

great place to live. not much rain (east coast). near the sea. 1-2 hrs drive to Glasgow/Edinburgh/Dundee. golf (st Andrews/carnoustie half an hour away) what's not to like?

Bollockstothat · 17/08/2021 16:55

A one bed flat, not in one of the 'best' areas of the city. It's a nice place to live if you're rich, but shit if you're not.

NoMoreTractors · 17/08/2021 16:56

It would buy this

I actually considered this house for myself previously but it only has one parking space. You could get a more standard 4 bed but in need of modernisation. Or a decent 3 bed.

It's a nice place to live, decent rail links. Plenty for teens to do, restaurants, cinema, shopping, inflatanation. I much prefer living here to the much smaller town I previously lived in 15 miles away.

Tamworth would buy a smaller style 4 bedroom house or a 4 bedrooms semi.

Cooper88 · 17/08/2021 16:59

This is what you could buy where I live. However schools are not great, and also not a lot for teenagers to do around here either.

Seedlipvshendricks · 17/08/2021 16:59

Only flats in Winchester and surrounds but excellent schools. Or bishops Waltham which is a small market town with good schools gets you a 2 bed terrace. Winchester is the most unaffordable place in England Shock

Wow, my supermarket delivery came just after I posted - and I've come back to loads of replies.

Thanks everyone, I'll have a good read...

A 4 bed in Yorkshire with a drive / garage / good garden. 20 mins drive from a city. 5 mins from countryside. Primary and secondary schools within walking distance as well as plenty of pubs, restaurants, shops and leisure facilities.

My friend just spent over 2 million on a stunning 4 bed down south, but lovely though it is, I laughed my head off at the ridiculousness of the price and her 4000 a month mortgage. Mine is 400 and nearly paid off, she will be working crazy hours forever to cover hers. Mental.

PinkPurpleParade · 17/08/2021 17:01

Central north west, in between Manchester and Liverpool. Not a particularly inspiring area but an hour from Wales and the Lakes and half an hour either way to Manchester or Liverpool.

300k is a decent size 4-bed new build with a nice garden and double drive & garage.

readytosell · 17/08/2021 17:01

East Midlands, get a 4 bed detached or 3 bed bungalow easily where I live.

This is why I could never move back darn sarf don't want to live in a shoebox.

callingtimethistime · 17/08/2021 17:01

@LookdeepintotheParka

300k would buy a 2 bed house here - probably not family sized. We're just north of Bristol and it's a great place to live - good schools and beautiful countryside to escape into.

Last year 300k would have easily got you a 3 bed family house here but due to people moving out of Bristol cos of high house prices, it's really climbed in value over the last 6 months.

Where in the UK would you consider moving?

Where in the UK would you consider moving?

I have friends and family in SE England, SW England, Wales, across Yorkshire and the North of England, and in Scotland. We don't need to be near any of them though. I'm from London and my friends have all left, there's no hometown to go back to now.

Studio flat. (London)

coffeeschmoffee · 17/08/2021 17:02

A cute little cottage, sadly no garden:

emsyj37 · 17/08/2021 17:03

My immediate area - this 3 bed semi with small garden near local train station, 5 mins walk to the beach, 25 min pleasant stroll to shops and restaurants. Grammar school system (not fee paying, proper 11 plus grammar system).
Or this 4 bed terrace a bit further up the road (15 mins walk).

Biker47 · 17/08/2021 17:04

4/5 bed detached house & garage on a new build estate.

emsyj37 · 17/08/2021 17:04

what about work OP? Can you work anywhere (or perhaps you don't need to work!) - do you need access to a city or a particular transport link?

callingtimethistime · 17/08/2021 17:04
Rightmove has a feature called “where can I live” you put your details and budget in there and will show you areas you can afford desired house in the UK.
where.rightmove.co.uk/
Ooh, I didn't know that thanks, I'll have a play with it.

Although, having said that, it doesn't come with the wisdom of MN does it?

MN should consider this feature Grin

4 bedroom detached. North Staffordshire. DD just paid £267k for hers, with integral Garage and decent sized garden. 2 mins walk to an outstanding Primary, DGS is 2 so it was an important consideration

callingtimethistime · 17/08/2021 17:06

Yes, I WFH, have done since before the pandemic, and so I can work anywhere.

(I wish my answer was "I don't need to work, darling!" wouldn't that be nice Grin)

I would like relatively easy access to a train station so the DS and I can get to my far flung friends and relatives easily, and they can come visit.

A studio flat if you don’t mind living on a main road.

Beautiful one bedroom flat in Hove, near beaches, cafes, shops.

I love living here and would never move, but if you needed a three bed semi you would be looking at £700k for a bog standard 3 bed end of terrace with no parking www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/108386969#/?channel=RES_BUY

MissDollyMix · 17/08/2021 17:12

Yorkshire. A 2 bed apartment or terrace in a good location (though no parking or garden), a 3 bed semi in one of the less desirable (but still ok) suburbs or a 4 bed if you were willing to look at one of the slightly ‘rough about the edges’ areas/ area with not great schools. Much comes down to school catchment.
