And do you like living there? If not, where would you rather be?

WIBU to consider moving there with my DC?

(This is part idle speculation, part deadly serious as going through separation and I've never liked the the town we currently live in. It doesn't have much to offer older DC, plus the secondaries aren't great here. Wondering where we might all have a better life... )

4 bed semi-detached with generous garden.

Norfolk, safe, low crime, beautiful countryside, stunning beaches, the Norfolk broads, so much for kids to do. 1hr50 to London on the train.

Wow! Your 4 bed thatched cottage is the winner so far in making my heart sing, look at it! Star

Where I am you could buy this

www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/80063382

Lots of new builds round here.
Plus sides: Lovely place to live. Small ish town on the southern edge of Dartmoor, 20 minutes from the coast, 10 minutes from Plymouth, 30 minutes from Exeter, 20 minutes to get across the bridge into Cornwall. It’s a beautiful area, great for bringing up children, especially if you’re all into outdoor leisure time. I don’t have first hand experience but I think the local secondary school is good.
Downsides: not a huge amount going on in terms of entertainment/culture but it’s getting better. May feel lacking if you’re used to/enjoy city living. Not very diverse/multi- cultural

Daftasabroom · 17/08/2021 17:19

Park caravans are going for £280k here.

ExchangedCat · 17/08/2021 17:20

just had a look on rightmove and that budget would buy this week two four bedroom detatched new houses in good areas of halifax
though halifax isnt a posh town i like living here because of access to other parts of this end of the Uk

msmandolin · 17/08/2021 17:29

Studio flat or one bed apartment in a high rise here. I love living here - it's exciting, busy and multicultural. BUT I live alone (renting) and would definitely want somewhere bigger if I were to move in with a partner and/or start a family. And I would love some outdoor space so I can grow vegetables!
I'm looking to move up north when this job contract is over so I can get on the property ladder - just looked up a two bed on my street and it would cost £725000 😱

greenpencils · 17/08/2021 17:29

I'm in Canada, I thought I'd throw this up. This is what you get where I am for $520k which is about 300k GBP. www.realtor.ca/real-estate/23315565/339-simpkins-wynd-leduc-southfork www.realtor.ca/real-estate/23524114/148-sturtz-bn-leduc-southfork

4 bed terrace in a not so good area

Older 3 bed semi or 3 bed detached new build in a middling area

2 bed semi in a good area

South West England. Schools are pretty good, employment is reasonable, transport links are good, crime is relatively low compared to the UK average. It’s not a bad place to live.

MrsSchadenfreude · 17/08/2021 17:31

A small studio flat that needed renovating.

5 bedroom house at the seaside.
Or a 2 bed new build apartment with seaviews.
Or a bungalow with some change.

MrsPsmalls · 17/08/2021 17:33

@Cookerhood

South east. A 2 bedroom flat (nice one in nice area) or maybe a terraced house.
Exactly this. Essex coast.
Spinxsta · 17/08/2021 17:35

Rural village in area of outstanding natural beauty... a fixer upper total shithole 2 bedroom terrace and you'd have to buy within 7 days of going on the market!

Mintjulia · 17/08/2021 17:36

A very tatty 3 bed fixer-upper house, or a new medium size two bed flat, or an older 2 bed house on an estate.

IdblowJonSnow · 17/08/2021 17:36

An unremarkable 3 bed semi.

Goldbar · 17/08/2021 17:37

A small 1 bed flat.

ChocolateDeficitDisorder · 17/08/2021 17:37

Small Fife village

Minutes away from the motorway into Edinburgh or Perth/Dundee.

Walking distance to bus Park and Ride with connections to all over Scotland.

Close to Dunfermline town for shopping and short walk to leisure park for cinema and bowling.

Twenty minutes drive to several beaches.

Just over budget but you get the gist
housesforsaletorent.co.uk/property/for-sale/3-bedroom-detached-house-for-sale-in-brackenhill-farmhouse-girvan-south-ayrshire-ka26/1338840/

My house is 5 bed detached double garage on 1. 5acres and I paid less than £200k......but.......its 200yrs old and we're doing a full renovation as it has no insulation.

EvilPea · 17/08/2021 17:39

1 bed or studio flat, you’d also have to offer within a week.
no I wouldn’t recommend it. We are being massively over developed so for now it’s lorry, dust and roadwork central and parking is becoming a real real issue due to extra cars and people not being able to buy with big enough driveways.

MrsMoastyToasty · 17/08/2021 17:39

A maisonette or a choice of 2 retirement properties just off the High Street. We're midway between Bristol and Bath.

Thimphu · 17/08/2021 17:39

3 bed semi

EvilPea · 17/08/2021 17:40

Actually can’t get anything bigger within an hour and a half commute.

onlychildhamster · 17/08/2021 17:40

In my area in London, there are precisely 7 results- retirement flats or 1 bed flats (not very nice ones). my flat is worth around 400k so i think thats the budget required to get a flat in my area.

GruffaIo · 17/08/2021 17:41

In my village, it would get you a 1 or 2-bed retirement flat. 3 miles away, it will get you a very sad looking, cash buyers only 3-bed end-of-terrace.
