to ask what £300k would buy where you live?

callingtimethistime · 17/08/2021 16:11

And do you like living there? If not, where would you rather be?

WIBU to consider moving there with my DC?

(This is part idle speculation, part deadly serious as going through separation and I've never liked the the town we currently live in. It doesn't have much to offer older DC, plus the secondaries aren't great here. Wondering where we might all have a better life... )

£300k would get you a 2-bed flat or tiny 2-bed terraced house in my Sussex town.

If you want a new-build, it's £280k for a (small) one-bed flat overlooking Tesco's car park.

EvilPea · 17/08/2021 17:42
I'm in Canada, I thought I'd throw this up. This is what you get where I am for $520k which is about 300k GBP. www.realtor.ca/real-estate/23315565/339-simpkins-wynd-leduc-southfork www.realtor.ca/real-estate/23524114/148-sturtz-bn-leduc-southfork
Shit. That actually makes me want to cry. It’s lovely.

ContadoraExplorer · 17/08/2021 17:45

It might get you a 3 bed semi-detached in my area which is excellent for schools and very popular with families. I'm in Scotland so it's usually offers over and the market is bonkers right now so stuff is going for 10-20% over the home report value which is usually about 10% over what the offers over amount shows as. Slightly further out you could probably get a 4 bed detached but you compromise on transport and amenities as its usually a "new town" and the schools aren't as highly rated.

Isis1981uk · 17/08/2021 17:50

A 2 bedroom flat! So not much!

Summerbubbles · 17/08/2021 17:51

In my town, a 3/4 bed detached house with garage and front/back garden in a good area.

Ragwort · 17/08/2021 17:52

green wow, that is a beautiful house! We lived in a sparsely populated part of the US many years ago, one of our favourite things to do was go and look at the new builds and imagine what we could buy compared to our modest Victorian terrace home in the UK!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 17/08/2021 17:53
Rightmove has a feature called “where can I live” you put your details and budget in there and will show you areas you can afford desired house in the UK.
where.rightmove.co.uk/
Oh my god. You should have kept that a secret😂

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 17/08/2021 17:53

Nothing. The average house price is £800,000. If we won the lottery we'd buy a big house in the country. Somewhere cheap so we could buy a bigger house.

MyShoelaceIsUndone · 17/08/2021 17:54

A tent.. or a bedsit in a block of flats next to be .. starting price was £333,000 bloody ridiculous.

AllieTM · 17/08/2021 17:54

A lower end 1 bed flat. I love where we live - we lived here long before the house prices became so crazy. The area has changed a lot though as now a standard 3 bedroom semi is at least £750k.

AngeloMysterioso · 17/08/2021 17:55

A nice 2 bed flat or a 2 up 2 down terrace with a courtyard garden (Tunbridge Wells). Further out of town, maybe a small ex-council house or somewhere in serious need of renovation.

We’re in a nice 2 bed flat and yeah it’s not as big a home as we’d like, but we love living here.

Offers over as it's Scotland. Think is currently the most expensive property in my town Grin

LakieLady · 17/08/2021 17:55

In a town in Kent, where a family member lives, a tiny building plot, with pp for a 3-bed house (a teeny-tiny house, at that), in a very average road not near the town centre or station, sold for £375k.

The auction estimate was £100-£150k.

And the build is going to be a nightmare as the house will be about a foot from the long driveway of the house behind, so the builder won't be able to put scaffolding on the flank wall.

onlychildhamster · 17/08/2021 17:56

I do love my area, so much so that I am looking at 3 bed flats for my next move so that I could gain an extra room but still be able to stay within my area. I am within walking distance to Muswell Hill, Highgate Woods, Hampstead Heath and in London zone 3. I don't have a car so I save on the costs of car ownership- which I plug into mortgage overpayments. That is the great benefit of london living- in most other places, its hard to live without a car. On the other hand, interest rates are so low that an extra 50k on a mortgage with my current interest rate (2.05%) costs around £213 per month. The average cost to run a car in the UK is £254 per month.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 17/08/2021 17:57

I love my area, easy access into the city centre by car or bus, can walk it in 30-40 minutes. Loads of good or outstanding schools, a real community feel. It is however a mix of private and council owned properties so classes as a deprived area and seems to have a bad reputation because of that. I've never had any problems and grew up in a tiny rural, prosperous village so was worried that it would feel 'rough' or less safe. It never has, and properties are really reasonably priced.

We got our 3 bed house 10 years ago for £83,000

£300,000 would get you a 4 bed detached house with a big garden and off road parking. Like these:

www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/108469145#/?channel=RES_BUY

It's a lovely place to live (up North but contrary to popular opinion that you can buy a mansion for 50p, 300k will NOT get you a family sized home)

LaurieFairyCake · 17/08/2021 18:04

That IS a family sized home ShockShockShock

CoopersHawke · 17/08/2021 18:07

A 5-bed detached house with 3 baths, separate garage, 17 acres of land… okay this isn't where, I live but I dream of moving here. Envy

Looubylou · 17/08/2021 18:13

I'm in the northeast - obviously depends on the estate- on mine a larger 3 bed or a smaller 4 bed. Quite large garden and double garage. 22 year old estate.

wantmorenow · 17/08/2021 18:16
