It's worrying that it isn't seen as such.

Where is the objective to overthrow a government by use of terror tactics?

Yes Incels are worrying and fringe, but It is exaggeration to call them terrorists.

CPS definition of terrorism: Terrorism is the use or threat of action, both in and outside of the UK, designed to influence any international government organisation or to intimidate the public. It must also be for the purpose of advancing a political, religious, racial or ideological cause.

Examples include:

serious violence against a person or damage to property,
endangering a person's life (other than that of the person committing the action),
creating a serious risk to the health or safety of the public or a section of the public

Notthemessiah · 13/08/2021 16:08

Calling them terrorists would be totally unproductive and self-defeating as I get the impression most of these men would love to be seen as such. They are searching for validation and they don't care what kind.

Moonmelodies · 13/08/2021 16:15

What would they prefer the government policy to be?

PlanDeRaccordement · 13/08/2021 16:17

@GingerAndTheBiscuits
Yes exactly. I don’t see reports of Incels engaging in terrorist activity or having terrorist cause. So they’re not at that level in my opinion.

They could become one, so perhaps I’d agree with putting on a watch list, but am sure the governments are already doing that.

araiwa · 13/08/2021 16:21

Diluting the meaning of words is terrorism

This.
But the lack of conversation and critical thinking around these men and how we’ve ended up here as a society is woeful.

TheGumption · 13/08/2021 16:24

It's terrifying and I'm sickened by the sympathetic comments on various news websites. It wouldn't be "poor guy, mental health services are shit" if this was a brown guy. Fact.

InpatientGardener · 13/08/2021 16:26

I believe it is in some spheres at least, I attended prevent strategy training and it was discussed at that. First I had heard of it, very worrying.

Orf1abc · 13/08/2021 16:27

This government sees Extinction Rebellion as a greater threat than the incel movement.

We live in quite bewildering times.

Theworldisfullofgs · 13/08/2021 16:28

It's a form of grooming that could potentially be exploited by a terrorist group.

This. They’re not terrorists, much as they’d love to be thought of that way.
frogswimming · 13/08/2021 16:33

They aren't terrorists by definition. But surely their forums / posts are hate speech and should be taken down, as social media radicalising terrorists is? They have similarly come from disadvantaged backgrounds, have social problems and feel injustice and have had this exploited by people radicalising them online.

They terrorise people, the clue is in the name. You can’t honestly believe that a man in a van is out to obliterate Muslims or a lone wolf can bring the British government down. Yet they are terrorists because they terrorise people. That is the definition of terrorism.
PlanDeRaccordement · 13/08/2021 16:42

@Wheretobuy
No, that’s not the definition of terrorism. Look at @GingerAndTheBiscuits post, she posted the full definition of terrorism and it is more than “terrorising people” virtually on the internet....

I have read that post too, it uses the word ‘or’ (‘Or to intimidate people’).
This is how terrorism works. And virtual terrorism is also terrorism in nearly all the civilised world now. Identifying terrorists virtually is actually one of the most important action police can take against them because this way, we can not only stop them in time, we can also track their extended network. So please do not minimise it.

Blossomtoes · 13/08/2021 16:48

Nobody’s minimising terrorism. But this isn’t terrorism.

ExpressDelivery · 13/08/2021 16:48

I'd never heard of it until today, but yes it seems like a political ideology reigning terror.

ThisIsSimplyBeyond · 13/08/2021 16:49

Yes but surely from gingers post (and no personal opinion on whether this is terrorism is implied from this)

"CPS definition of terrorism:
Terrorism is the use or threat of action, both in and outside of the UK, designed to influence any international government organisation or to intimidate the public. It must also be for the purpose of advancing a political, religious, racial or ideological cause.

It does meet that definition.

serious violence against a person or damage to property,
endangering a person's life (other than that of the person committing the action),
creating a serious risk to the health or safety of the public or a section of the public"

ConstantlySeekingHappiness · 13/08/2021 16:49

The incel movement does indeed meet the definition of terrorism in law in the U.K.

However, it’s not actually treated as such by authorities because no one cares about women that much.

It’s as simple as that.

ThisIsSimplyBeyond · 13/08/2021 16:50

Well I bollocksed that post up! Hopefully what I mean is clear...?

The OP hasn't said they're terrorists, she's said it's terrorist ideology - I agree whole heartedly.

Just because it isn't a religious group trying to overthrow governments does not mean they don't have terrorist ideology. The fact that there have been a number rof mass murders carried out by Incel people is testament to this. Its hate speech at the least and a form of terrorism.

We're talking about people who honestly believe the rubbish they tout and appear to Stop at nothing to prove it (in their eyes anyway.)

Anyone who does a mass shooting, invoking terror in communities and sometimes countries, has terrorist ideologies. They want the terrorist infamy and to be like the large terrorist cells (for want of a better word) having seen how much attention they can get with their acts.
