It's worrying that it isn't seen as such.

Laura Bates describes the problem in her book, Men Who Hate Women: From Incels to Pickup Artists, the Truth about Extreme Misogyny and how it Affects Us All.
Book description:
"The first comprehensive undercover look at the terrorist movement no one is talking about.Men Who Hate Women examines the rise of secretive extremist communities who despise women and traces the roots of misogyny across a complex spider web of groups. ..."

But there wouldn't be enough good looking women to match up with them so how's that going to work?

Hoppinggreen · 13/08/2021 17:20

I think we should stick with “sad little nobody’s”
Terrorist might sound a bit glamorous in some circles, like they have a cause

They do have a cause though. The very definition of terrorism fits on them. Which circles are you referring to?

I was reading about the Plymouth shooter today and watched one of his videos. It's very clear from his video that he was suffering from mental health problems as there was evidence of depression which often manifests as anger issues. If he'd got the support he needed it could maybe have all been avoided and lives may have been saved. His mother was concerned enough to ask for help, it is very sad that she was ignored, both by the NHS & also be the Police. Very, very, sad, especially for those families who lost loved ones.
Does anyone ever say this about radicalised Muslim men that kill?

I’m not saying I disagree with the sentiment - so much of radicalised male violence seems to be driven by feelings of disenfranchisement and inadequacy, and that is worthy of support/professional intervention. But it doesn’t excuse what he did in the same way it doesn’t excuse the actions of anyone else who kills for any ideology.

Incidentally the govt does recognise incel movement is a risk, along with far right extremism and so on. I’m just not sure they’re actively doing anything about it.

JayniSummers · 13/08/2021 17:38

Read men who hate women . It's a movement alright

VickyEadieofThigh · 13/08/2021 17:39

@ThisIsSimplyBeyond

Yes but surely from gingers post (and no personal opinion on whether this is terrorism is implied from this)

"CPS definition of terrorism:
Terrorism is the use or threat of action, both in and outside of the UK, designed to influence any international government organisation or to intimidate the public. It must also be for the purpose of advancing a political, religious, racial or ideological cause.

It does meet that definition.

Examples include:

serious violence against a person or damage to property,
endangering a person's life (other than that of the person committing the action),
creating a serious risk to the health or safety of the public or a section of the public"

This. It IS terrorism.
JayniSummers · 13/08/2021 17:39

All women should read this book

Dozer · 13/08/2021 17:41

GingerAndTheBiscuits posted the UK Crown Prosecution Service definition. Which ‘incel’ terrorism clearly meets.

But because of the skin colour and specific publicy-espoused beliefs of the perpetrator the media says ‘not terrorism’.

Similarly sick of the mainstream press describing murders perpetrated by men on their partner and children as ‘tragic domestic incidents’ rather than violent murder.

YANBU

say it and say it again for the people in the back.

Something needs to be done about this movement whose members have proven themselves to be seriously dangerous

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 13/08/2021 17:44

@TheGumption

It's terrifying and I'm sickened by the sympathetic comments on various news websites. It wouldn't be "poor guy, mental health services are shit" if this was a brown guy. Fact.
Yes I've noticed the narrative is sympathy and how tough he found life.

I'm actually fucking furious. What do men actually have to do before they're seen as a danger? Apparently killing a toddler doesn't cut it

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 13/08/2021 17:46

I also don't care if they'd be happy to be called terrorists - they need to be treated as what they are. Anyone who's brave enough to take a peep at an incel forum will see them encouraging each other to attack and rape women and congratulating each other when they frighten and intimidate women. And too many are murdering people. What more do you need to call them terrorists

Nomorescreentime · 13/08/2021 17:46

To me this attack mirrors those labelled "terrorist" attacks; a disenfranchised young man becomes radicalised by online material and commits awful offences in the name of their cause.

It seems because of this person's skin colour though, we are more comfortable to label him as a mentally ill loner who needed help, rather than a scary terrorist.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 13/08/2021 17:47

@ConstantlySeekingHappiness

The incel movement does indeed meet the definition of terrorism in law in the U.K.

However, it’s not actually treated as such by authorities because no one cares about women that much.

It’s as simple as that.

Yep. Great summary!

I think in this instance we can't blame the authorities.
Dozer · 13/08/2021 17:52

People being murdered and authorities’ definitions of terrorism not ‘real’ enough terrorism for you, PlanDeRaccordement?

Biscuit
adrianmolesmole · 13/08/2021 17:53

Most incels are actually white supremacists, so their actions CAN be taken as terrorism. But there is so much secrecy surrounding the incels that it's hard to pin down. They need to be recognised for what they are, exposed and eradicated.

LopsidedWombat · 13/08/2021 17:53

I also recommend reading Men Who Hate Women by Laura Bates. Prior to actually looking into incels (and others) I too thought it was just a small group of ultimately harmless online trolls but it isn't just a virtual problem. It is also worrying that they groom vulnerable young boys.

cariadlet · 13/08/2021 18:06

Incels definitely meet the definition of terrorism which was posted earlier. There was an interesting article by Joan Smith which was published in the Guardian recently: "What do many terrorists have in common? They abuse women."

The perpetrators of violence being white didn’t stop us labelling them terrorists in N Ireland. It just muddies the waters to bring race into this.

For a start do not give them a firearms license.

A simple google online shows he's all over Reddit in Incel groups. (I didn't do this myself someone reported it on another thread)

He also had very open you tube channels.

He was given a gun despite his beliefs and very clear poor sense of reasoning.
