It's worrying that it isn't seen as such.

Wiki quote prior to this attack:
At least eight mass murders, resulting in a total of 61 deaths, have been committed since 2014 by men who have either self-identified as incels or who had mentioned incel-related names and writings in their biographies ...Beginning in 2018, the incel ideology has increasingly been described as a terrorism threat, and a February 2020 attack in Toronto, Canada became the first instance of allegedly incel-related violence to be prosecuted as an act of terrorism.

I think it will be recognised as terrorism in the near future.

AtticusHoysAnus · 13/08/2021 18:56

Incels.

Basically tragic gimps that can't get laid

Truly pathetic.

Moonmelodies · 13/08/2021 19:01

Just because these people are incels doesn't necessarily mean their crimes were commited to further that particular ideology.
Just because Harold Shipman was a Quaker doesn't mean Methodism should be considered terrorism.

MoggyP · 13/08/2021 19:04

BBC article on this

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-58207064

I'd prefer to just call them criminals

ThisIsSimplyBeyond · 13/08/2021 19:04

And I'm sure all of the darker skinned men who happened to post on ISIS websites were believed when they said the same, following a totally unrelated random rampage... 🤔

NeonJellyBaby · 13/08/2021 19:04

It’s never terrorism when white men are the perpetrators.

MoggyP · 13/08/2021 19:06

The IRA passed you by?

The important qualifier missing from this often posted quote is "since 9/11"

It was (iirc - history people would be helpful here) that one incident that sparked the newer Americanised definition of terrorism.

NeonJellyBaby · 13/08/2021 19:10

What the fuck have the IRA got to do with anything?

DrCoconut · 13/08/2021 19:11

I did prevent training today and incel was specifically mentioned as a red flag that should alert you to potential extremist behaviour.

ThisIsSimplyBeyond · 13/08/2021 19:13

According to the bbc article, it's a crossover of incel beliefs alongside other red flag beliefs (say far right/extreme Islam/etc) - is that what the training said?

Good, because when I did it years ago and passed comment that it was usually men who committed terror offences I basically got an eye roll from the facilitator. It’s good to see things have moved on since then.
MoggyP · 13/08/2021 19:14

They're a terrorist organisation dominated by white men, and which was most definitely classed as terrorism.

'never' in relation to white men is wholly misplaced

(You can easily look round the globe and find more - white supremacists, Chechnya, Bader Meinhof)

ThisIsSimplyBeyond · 13/08/2021 19:16

As I said to a friend yesterday, off the top of my head I can only think of one solo mass-shooter (in America) who was female. Vs how many males?

Coincidence though, apparently 🙄

MostlyNormalSometimesOdd · 13/08/2021 19:24

If being radicalised online to hate half the population, resulting in you murdering people isn’t classed as terrorism then I don’t know what is

Very true about the cross over.

It's been documented this man was very far right and a vocal trump supporter.

Prevent does say that anything in isolation could be innocent and not to jump gun and to look at red flags in the wider context and you need to get more information.

I'm glad Incels are being discussed in Prevent training now. I'm really hoping that this awful event will wake up everyone to these highly dangerous men a bit more.

toocold54 · 13/08/2021 19:44

I did prevent training today and incel was specifically mentioned as a red flag that should alert you to potential extremist behaviour.

I’ve had training as I work in a secondary school and they never mentioned incels, I hadn’t heard of it before today but I know that if someone is misogynistic, racist etc it is a red flag as they feel like they’re superior. But I am glad that some training providers are talking about the group.

I believe in other countries this group is classed as a terrorist group as someone killed a group of people in the USA and Canada and someone said Japan too.

What annoyed me was that I was about 5mins away at the time and I’d heard that it wasn’t a terrorist and he was dead. I just assumed it was a man who had killed his family and then killed himself.

It was only afterwards that I realised how quickly the police decided it wasn’t terror related - like how would they know as soon as they got there that it wasn’t terror related and the only reason I can think of was because he was white.

cariadlet · 13/08/2021 19:47

I just remembered watching a documentary about Incels on the bbc last year or the year before. I've checked and it's available on I player for anyone unfamiliar with them.

It's called "Inside the Secret World of Incels".

itsgettingwierd · 13/08/2021 19:53

The first/ initial victim was his mum which explains the "domestic incident that spread beyond" take.

It's only now we are hearing and able to see his incel connections and the fact he blamed his mum for this.

So terror or domestic it was intended to cause harm due to extremist beliefs.

Againstmachine · 13/08/2021 19:56

"It’s never terrorism when white men are the perpetrators"
"What the fuck have the IRA got to do with anything?'

The IRA was predominantly white, disproving your first statement, are you that clueless.

Thanks for this. I’ve just put it on and watched the video of Elliot Rodger and I’m really not sure I can watch much more. He’s so calculated and chilling.
