Husband spied on me through Blink camera

itsgrogubitch · 12/08/2021 10:37

I'm not really sure what to do. I've name changed because I know some people on here. Husband is working from home and I'm a SAHM to our 5 and 2 year olds. Things have been a bit tense recently, maybe because it's summer holidays and we're all under the same roof a lot, I'm not sure.

Anyway, today I asked him to sit with the kids for 20 minutes while I grabbed a shower and got dressed. I suggested he maybe caught up with some work emails so he doesn't feel like he's wasting time, as he moans usually and then tacks the time onto the end of his work day. Off I go to shower, go upstairs to dry off etc and get dressed. We have a pet tortoise who lives in a tortoise table. I bought a Blink camera so I could see if she was ok while we were out (I'm a bit of a nervous first time pet owner). While I was moisturising, naked obvs (I wasn't taking ages over it, and I have really dry skin, I can't skip it!) I noticed the blue light on camera was which I know means the live view has been activated by the app because of when I set it up. I just froze for a moment and then took 2 massive steps out of shot. I'm absolutely mortified. I calmly got dressed and asked him to delete the Blink app. He acted all innocent and then when I asked why he spied on me, he said he was just checking what I was up to.

The camera used to just show the tortoise table and a tiny bit of the bed, I was getting ready on the other of the bed so it must have been adjusted to cover that area, it's a manual adjust one. I just don't know what to think. Who spies on their own wife? AIBU to be feeling really angry and violated?

Ew thats gross. Disagree with other posters its not dramatic. Someone who gets thrills spying on his wife while she's having private moments is seriously creepy. Even if he never did it again makes you wonder what goes on in his mind

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 12/08/2021 12:04

Oh man, I'm so sorry.

Trust your gut.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 12/08/2021 12:05

Strange

"I can’t imagine why he’d spy on you naked if you live together, doesn’t he see you naked? "

that's not how voyeurism works.

reesewithoutaspoon · 12/08/2021 12:08

I would make sure that he has deleted any saved video. I have a blink camera. you can share the videos if you so wanted too. It has 2 options. motion trigger activation or you can switch to continuous live feed (not sure these are recorded) but the motion activated definitely is as it sends a notification to your phone and the accompanying video clip.
Whether he was just taking them for personal use or not I would need to be 100% certain that any copies have definitely been deleted

Recessed · 12/08/2021 12:08

I would be completely creeped out too, it's such a violation. What's your relationship like generally OP? You say he huffs when asked to watch the DC. Is this just when he's working or does he not pull his weight generally? Wondering if it's part of a pattern of sexist, entitled male thinking.

WetBench · 12/08/2021 12:08

I would assume he’s moved the camera to record you having sex. Which is fine if that’s agreed really really really not if not! We have cameras outside the house which record if I’m gardening, but then I’m not naked and who cares if that’s seen as my neighbours can see me anyway, but the indoor ones and pointed at the bed? Hell no.

SofiaMichelle · 12/08/2021 12:09

We know he moved the camera and we know he activated it while she was naked in view of the camera.

No we don't know he deliberately activated it.

OP has made an assumption regarding the blue light, which some of us have pointed out isn't necessarily the case.

If she was in view of the camera it would have activated automatically, unless specifically switched off, and the light would come on.

That would ping up an alert straight to all phones/iPads/smart watches, etc, registered to the system. Touching the notification instantly plays back the last 15/30/whatever seconds.

Clymene · 12/08/2021 12:10

'Turned it on absent-minded'

Fuck me, that's a whole new level of minimising

reesewithoutaspoon · 12/08/2021 12:11

you dont turn a Blink camera on to live feed by accident. you have to go into your system via the app. choose the camera and then click the live activation button.

billy1966 · 12/08/2021 12:12

How absolutely creepy.

What a truly awful shock for you.

I must admit I would be devastated at the invasion of my privacy.

Just awful.

Having a camera and a tortoise in your bedroom is weird full stop

Wombatstew · 12/08/2021 12:14

When is the last time you checked to see if the camera was on the tortoise table? Also if you have the app on your phone can you see if anything else has been recorded?
Hope you get to the bottom of this.

Owlshouse · 12/08/2021 12:16

@StrangeToSee voyeurs get gratification from watching or recording someone without their knowledge, the thrill perps get comes from the lack of consent, it doesn't matter that he could see her with permission at any other time.

SofiaMichelle · 12/08/2021 12:16

The point is the OP doesn't know that Live View was activated.

She has assumed it was based on incorrectly thinking that the blue light always means 'Live View'.

To be fair, I've absent-mindedly clicked on the wrong thing before and activated our security camera app. But I immediately quit out of it while cursing my scatterbrained error, not kept watching.
ShitShop · 12/08/2021 12:21

@JustLyra

He’s admitted he was spying on the OP why are people downplaying it talking about motion sensors?

Depending on what phone he has it’s also extremely easy to record from your screen, even if an app it’s self doesn’t allow recordings to be saved.

No he said he was checking what she’s up to - as in was she finished in the shower and potentially having a sneaky lie down while he’s trying to get on with some work but been left looking after the DCs (not saying he shouldn’t have to look after them. But him admitting to checking what she was up to is not the same as him wanking over images of her putting moisturiser on!)
toocold54 · 12/08/2021 12:22

following as I suspect my husband is doing something similar. Haven't found a camera yet. Funnily enough, we also have a few tortoises!

It must be a horrible feeling of having no privacy in your own home!

reesewithoutaspoon · 12/08/2021 12:22

SofiaMichelle Thats what I,m saying. If it was on Live feed then he's deliberately moved the camera to view her, but I,m not 100% sure whether live feed saves a video version. If it was on motion activation then the camera has been deliberately moved to include the part of the room she was in and activate when it sensed her there. Neither of these things happened by accident. As far as I am aware the blue light just means the camera is active either live or recording.

godmum56 · 12/08/2021 12:24

@SoosanCarter

If you have a heat lamp for the tortoise, don’t leave it on while you are out. If tortie turns over under the lamp, they can die.

But tortoises prefer to live outside!

yup this deffo. Mine live outside.

tortoise owners (and i am one) ARE werid full stop. Mine move into my spare room autum and spring when its cold outside.
thelionqwueen · 12/08/2021 12:26

Of course he moved the camera. Why else would he check the app as soon as you went upstairs. He sure didn’t open it to check the tortoise was ok.

aseai · 12/08/2021 12:31

Every single day I find more and more justifications as to why I will never share a house with a man.

WeRTheOnesWeHaveBeenWaitingFor · 12/08/2021 12:31

I would LTB for lots of reasons, firstly he can’t watch his own children for a few minutes without making a big deal out of it, second he is a pervert who has no boundaries and I couldn’t trust him, third of all he thinks you are so stupid you won’t notice.

markmichelle · 12/08/2021 12:33

It would be the secrecy that is, imo, the weird bit if he thought the OP was masturbating after the shower. But nearly as bad secretly watching her cook or read a book.
It is the hugging himself about 'knowing' something private. Ugh!

WeRTheOnesWeHaveBeenWaitingFor · 12/08/2021 12:34

Also I would be very worried that he may be exchanging videos with people online.
