AIBU-Tom Cruise

Had a Tom Cruise film on in the background today as I was packing for holiday. It was Collateral on Netflix. It got me thinking about how amazing he was.

When I was a kid in the 80s he was the biggest movie star in the world. He has an amazing legacy that is somewhat tarnished by his association with Scientology.

I loved Cocktail as a kid. How can a genuine movie star just loose a big chunk of their reputation, was it the couch jumping I wonder….the lack of people around him who tell him the truth? I wonder if he sees his daughter?

He was amazing though, I’m not bu about that 😀

Can't stand him. My friend was hugely into him when we were children and made me sit through Top Gun about a million times.

I did quite enjoy Vanilla Sky just to watch bad things happen to him.

I had that grin of his. It's like, oh I'm such a naughty bugger but I'm adorable so you'll forgive me. Well you're not and I don't. Go away.

merrymelody · 24/07/2021 21:13

He's annoying and creepy, as a PP said. I liked him as an actor in Risky Business when it came out but on watching it again recently, I thought he was a total shit.

Peoniesandpeaches · 24/07/2021 21:13

Anyone who promotes Scientology and benefits from them cannot be a nice guy. There are ex members of sea org coming out and talking about basically being held in slavery. They speak of being ordered to plant a field of wild flowers because he had a dream to cavort through them on a date.
His Scientology video where he talks of how Scientologist are the only people capable of helping others and his attacks on Brooke Shields barely scrape the surface of his deeply troubling and misogynistic views.
I refuse to buy his Mr Rogers good guy act.

MaxNormal · 24/07/2021 21:14

I was going to say he's not in Young Guns but I saw he had a cameo.
Was a big fan of the scene when Emelio Estevez shows us his arse, mind you.

Nat6999 · 24/07/2021 21:16

He's been filming the new Mission Impossible in the Peak District not far from me recently. I loved him in his earlier films like Risky Business, Top Gun, Rain Man, Cocktail & Born on the 4th of July but haven't bothered watching anything else, I have seen clips of the new Top Gun & it looks really good.

No one remembers he was married before Nicole to Mimi Rodgers. Casts neither Tim or Nicole in a good light

Rege · 24/07/2021 21:17

That whole jumping on the couch thing was nauseating to watch considering he was dumping his wife (Mimi Rodgers) for Nicole Kidman who he started having an affair with on set of Far and Away.

CatherineAragon · 24/07/2021 21:20

He was jumping on the couch when he met Katie Holmes, not Nicole Kidman. I do like many of his films , but I think there was something very strange about the way his marriage to NK ended. Also the way KH left him and the way he cut Nicole out of their children’s lives. He doesn’t see his only natural child. I think that says it all really.

Aprilx · 24/07/2021 21:21

@Rege

That whole jumping on the couch thing was nauseating to watch considering he was dumping his wife (Mimi Rodgers) for Nicole Kidman who he started having an affair with on set of Far and Away.
Wasn’t the jumping on the couch about getting married to Katie Holmes?
Sundancerintherain · 24/07/2021 21:22

Looks dead behind the eyes. It's a no from me.

lucysnowe2 · 24/07/2021 21:22

He's a great actor - check out scene from Magnolia - and brilliant movie star. Who knows what he's like in his private life? he does seem to be all facets and no centre. I think he's great though.

herecomesthsun · 24/07/2021 21:24

Bit weird, bizarre ideas about religion (and antidepressants),seems to have been very controlling in his professional and personal life. And short.

maggiecate · 24/07/2021 21:24

Katie must have had something pretty big on him in her back pocket to get clean away like she did. He was all for fighting it out and moving to get the case moved to Los Angeles where 50-50 custody is the default. But in two weeks it was all settled with Katie getting full custody of Suri and apparently has had no blowback from the Scientology lot.

EspressoDoubleShot · 24/07/2021 21:24

Sofa jumping was on Oprah and he was dating Kate Holmes

Katekarate · 24/07/2021 21:25

From what I've read about him he had an incredibly tough childhood so I think he turned to this cult instead of say drink or drugs. Who knows what he's really like. But he makes great movies and I think is a very good actor who's quite underrated because he makes so many action movies. Jerry Maguire is my favourite TC movie, he's great in that.

SnotsGotTheBoobies · 24/07/2021 21:26

I don’t like Tom cruise, I never have, even before I learned he was a Scientologist. I think he’s a terrible actor, nothing I’ve ever seen him in has made me believe he was that character that he was playing.
I know I’m going against the grain here, but I just can’t get into any of his movies. It seems like he’s always just a man playing a part. Rather than a good actor who draws me in and makes me believe he’s that person in a film. If that makes sense?

Dullardmullard · 24/07/2021 21:27

God can’t stand the man at all

Thinks he’s above others so I’ve no idea what Graham Norton is on about. Denial most likely.

Classica · 24/07/2021 21:28

I've just re-watched the couch jumping on Oprah thing. So weird and manic.

NotAnotherPushyMum · 24/07/2021 21:29

Love his movies but think he’s a very odd man, and you couldn’t pay me enough money to have to put up with his weirdo crap. That said, all the people that have worked with and for him over the years and hardly anyone has a bad word to say about him. I’d imagine there would be quite a few stories by now if he was particularly difficult.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 24/07/2021 21:29

Don't like him, because of the Scientology stuff. And he is completely and utterly unsexy!

EspressoDoubleShot · 24/07/2021 21:29

Makes total sense he’s a movie star not an actor. IMO he lacks ability to be anything other than Tom Cruise.
Other actors you can suspend reality and they become the character and immerse themselves

Rege · 24/07/2021 21:30

April You are so right! I got them mixed up BUT he was on Oprah when he got with Nicole as well, that’s where the mix up came from. They we’re interviewed together about the movie and then of course their relationship. I remember when Nicole was asked, ‘so what made you fall in love with him?’ She gushed, ‘Just LOOK at him!’. All the while poor Mimi had been given her marching orders.

ahoyshipmates · 24/07/2021 21:30

@IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves

It's that cult so many of them seem to fall into that fucks them up.
Some might say that certain cults brainwash their members rather thoroughly. And that once in, it is almost impossible to get out again.

So I wouldn't judge anyone who is a member of such a cult.

sst1234 · 24/07/2021 21:32

He’s a real move star in an old school kind of way. That kind of celebdom simply does not happen to actors anymore. He’s actually a very underrated actor too, some great performance over the years. His personal life is his business but he comes across genuinely nice in public and with the public.

Classica · 24/07/2021 21:36

That kind of celebdom simply does not happen to actors anymore.

I agree with that. I can't think of an equivalent young actor these days.
