AIBU-Tom Cruise

Had a Tom Cruise film on in the background today as I was packing for holiday. It was Collateral on Netflix. It got me thinking about how amazing he was.

When I was a kid in the 80s he was the biggest movie star in the world. He has an amazing legacy that is somewhat tarnished by his association with Scientology.

I loved Cocktail as a kid. How can a genuine movie star just loose a big chunk of their reputation, was it the couch jumping I wonder….the lack of people around him who tell him the truth? I wonder if he sees his daughter?

He was amazing though, I’m not bu about that 😀

I like many of his movies but he comes across a bit scary and fake in interviews.

Bluntness100 · 24/07/2021 20:53

God I used to have a huge crush on dolph Lundgren. 😂

And yes he would have been great as reacher, love those books.

I don’t mind Tom cruise , I like some of his movies, but the work he’s had done makes him look not quite human some how now.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 24/07/2021 20:53

I think he was a good actor earlier on.
now he is just Tom Cruise in everything.
I like his films.

I saw him once in RL. he's so much smaller than I expected.

SanFranBear · 24/07/2021 20:53

Christian Bale credits Tom Cruise as the inspiration on how he should play Patrick Bateman in American Psycho. He said he saw TC on Letterman (or similar) and despite him being charming and laughing, he was utterly dead behind the eyes! Totally see that...

I do have to agree with the PP - love his films, but not in love with him anymore!

EspressoDoubleShot · 24/07/2021 20:53

I genuinely can’t use the word superb to describe Tom cruise

Tiramiwho · 24/07/2021 20:55

@BewareTheBeardedDragon

I have enjoyed some of his movies but I read that he made Katie go through childbirth with no pain relief and making no noise - which if true has put me off him for life.
Kelly Preston is on record for saying that's what she did, in accordance with Scientology doctrine. She seemed to have a positive take on the whole experience. Said it brought peace to the newborn.
purplesequins · 24/07/2021 20:56

his 2-meter-rant sounded very rehearsed. very cold and calculated bet he released it himself

Ethelfromnumber73 · 24/07/2021 20:56

I loved him as a teen but he repulses me now - Scientology, the Katie Holmes thing, and something else I can't put my finger on. Bleeugh.

FreeBritnee · 24/07/2021 20:56

I consider him a bot. He constantly performs in public, sounds very controlling in private and makes sure he gets his wives to sign confidentiality contracts when the relationship ends so they are bound by its conditions. Honestly I just don’t want to know any of his films or any of his appearances.

EnjoyingTheSilence · 24/07/2021 20:56

Well I think he’s great. The whole Scientology stuff is weird and I don’t like that but I think he’s great.

LizB62A · 24/07/2021 20:56

I can't watch anything he's in - he's just too creepy
And don't get me started on him as Jack Reacher - completely ridiculous casting !

Classica · 24/07/2021 20:57

@BobbinThreadbare123

I also see Dolph Lundgren as Reacher! Tom Cruise's front teeth - one of them is in the centre line of his face and once you notice it, toy can't unsee it! Every time I find out a celeb is a Scientologist I feel really disappointed in them. I like A Few Good Men.
If you've ever seen The Outsiders he had the most crooked teeth back then so I imagine it took a look of orthodontic work to get them the way they are now. These days they'd have skipped the braces and gone straight to veneers.
TSSDNCOP · 24/07/2021 20:57

Love him. Then again, I'm not married to him. Wish I had been in the 80's though.

lifeturnsonadime · 24/07/2021 20:57

I thought this thread would be about the fact that he's currently holidaying in a luxury yacht off the Cornish Coast!

Smackthepony · 24/07/2021 20:58

@QueenBee52

Dolph Lundgren was exactly who I pictured in my mind when i read the first Jack Reacher book. I nearly fell of my chair when they cast TC! He couldn’t be any more opposite of the description of the character. Worst casting ever!

OlivesTree · 24/07/2021 20:58

I thought he came across as annoying and weird in the last Graham Norton that he appeared on. Kept jumping in and speaking over everyone. Like he had to show that he knew about everything that everyone else interviewed was talking about and add his two cents. It was awkward.

Jux · 24/07/2021 21:01

He's dreadful. I don't watch films with him in. I switch channel if he's on a talk show. I don't want that dreadful little man in my house in any way shape or form.

I might have overlooked his Scientology bollocks but it informs his behaviour in rl and that is reprehensible.

InTSR · 24/07/2021 21:02

I was a teen when top gun was out, I like a lot of his films but have always wished they all had a different male lead...

Couldn't bring myself to watch him self cast as Jack Reacher.

TSSDNCOP · 24/07/2021 21:04

Plus, is he polite??? Didnt he yell for 10 minutes without pause at two crew members who just failed to maintain a distance of 2metres?

In fairness, there are quite a few MNers that could give him a very good run for his money in COVID infractions Grin

topwings · 24/07/2021 21:05

I like his films (Jack Reacher being an exception!) and I consider him a proper Hollywood movie star - he doesn't have social media where he tries to be relatable / where you see the inside of his house etc.

BorderlineHappy · 24/07/2021 21:05

I was a teem also when Top Gun came out.
He's good looking but I don't fancy him.
There's something"off" about him.

Orphlids · 24/07/2021 21:05

He has a lovely nose.

Classica · 24/07/2021 21:08

I've just gone through his filmography and my pick for best Tom Cruise film is Young Guns. Which I'm sure is pretty terrible really but it was the first film I went to see in the cinema with my friends and without any parental supervision. I swooned at the whole cast.

Loudestcat14 · 24/07/2021 21:10

I hear you OP! TC is my favourite movie star. (Note I say movie star, not actor!) I think at a personal level he's a total weirdo but I love pretty much every movie he's been in.

TSSDNCOP · 24/07/2021 21:10

I read Alan Ritchson had the nod as Jack Reacher, but that was pre-covid.

Does anyone know the history of how Tom got the part, I assume he bought the book/rights. Did Lee Child not have any say in casting? Seems surprising given the book sales.
