AIBU-Tom Cruise

Had a Tom Cruise film on in the background today as I was packing for holiday. It was Collateral on Netflix. It got me thinking about how amazing he was.

When I was a kid in the 80s he was the biggest movie star in the world. He has an amazing legacy that is somewhat tarnished by his association with Scientology.

I loved Cocktail as a kid. How can a genuine movie star just loose a big chunk of their reputation, was it the couch jumping I wonder….the lack of people around him who tell him the truth? I wonder if he sees his daughter?

He was amazing though, I’m not bu about that 😀

I find him creepy. And a good friend of mine worked on a film with him and he wasn’t very nice to people.

tangone · 24/07/2021 20:29

He’s a very talented actor. and can play a variety of roles. He’s the star of Interview with a Vampire even though Brad Pitt has the lead role. He can do comedy well - I didn’t recognise him in Tropic Thunder.

Donationwitheverypack · 24/07/2021 20:29

He seems thoroughly decent to me, he does have a reputation for being lovely to the staff etc, but then we know all that other stuff...

I think everyone needs people who will keep them in line and huge wealth and celebrity mean people lose that.

Tiramiwho · 24/07/2021 20:30

I loved him in Cocktail Blush
Rainman,Risky business and Top Gun. I obviously go for the 'cocky youngster on a life-journey finds his true potential and what really matters' 🙄( though I hated The Color of Money )
Also enjoy Minority Report every time I see it.
Hate full-on action films usually, so I pass on all of that.
He gives a good interview, so charismatic and yes, I fancy him still 🤭

Classica · 24/07/2021 20:30

Katie was lucky to have a crafty divorce shark of a lawyer for a father and obviously inherited his cunning, which saved her from the same fate.

Katie and her dad seemingly played a blinder.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 24/07/2021 20:31

I have enjoyed some of his movies but I read that he made Katie go through childbirth with no pain relief and making no noise - which if true has put me off him for life.

Southwestrunningmum · 24/07/2021 20:32

I think he comes across well but do think it’s unusual that he doesn’t see his daughter Suri (if papers are correct)

Tinysarah1985 · 24/07/2021 20:32

My OH was an extra in a film with him. Said apart from TOM Hardy, he has never met a nicer man. Remembered everyones name and details about them, spoke to them all and made sure they were looked after. He even made sure that the extras weren't kept hanging around for ages in the 80+kg robot suits.
Me and my OH got married at one of the weekends, and he even asked him how it went when he was back there the following Monday.
Then about 3 years later, completely by chance, I was going swimming in a hotel where he was staying, he held the door open for me as I was struggling to carry a 3 month old in a car seat and a swimming bag. Then when I was working out how to get out of the pool with said 3 month old, he held her while I got out onto the side of the pool then passed her to me. Such a nice guy.

Sparklesocks · 24/07/2021 20:33

I’m not a fan of him on a personal level but I can recognise he’s a good ‘movie star’ - very charismatic in his films, and apparently is very amiable and engaging with the many people he meets and interacts with. Famously he always spent the longest time at red carpet events meeting fans etc.

Holothane · 24/07/2021 20:33

Sorry not a fan never have been.

Southwestrunningmum · 24/07/2021 20:34

@PicsInRed yes I thought she played a blinder, I think he genuinely had no idea.

What happened with Nicole’s first 2 kids must have been heartbreaking

Phyllis321 · 24/07/2021 20:35

I have a 14 yo DS and have therefore been obliged to watch the recent Mission Impossible films more than once....
They are bloody good and so is he in them. Lizard or not.

Chickychickydodah · 24/07/2021 20:36

I used to like him but now I think he is an arrogant prick and he makes my flesh crawl.

Bimblybomeyelash · 24/07/2021 20:37

Scientology is just too fucking weird for me to view Tom Cruise as anything but a massively egotistical weirdo.

grapewine · 24/07/2021 20:38

@Kanaloa

I find him so utterly creepy. Like a lizard got it’s one true wish to be a real man, and even though it’s walking around in its new man suit it’s still a lizard with no concept of human behaviour.
Nailed it.
Classica · 24/07/2021 20:41

Apparently he's dating the lovely Hayley Attwell.

Oh, Hayley, are you sure?

GolfEchoRomeoTangoIndia · 24/07/2021 20:43

I don’t like him because I think Scientology is actually evil but the Mission Impossible films are brilliantly executed.

Aprilx · 24/07/2021 20:43

He seems a bit peculiar, I don’t understand why he had heart throb status and I have not got round to watching Top Gun yet. But I can see why he has been a successful actor, I have never seen a bad performance from him and generally speaking if I see he is in a film, I would feel quite confident that it will be a decent film to watch.

Bluntness100 · 24/07/2021 20:43

He’s not dating Hayley, she’s his co star and went as she was invited. 😂

Classica · 24/07/2021 20:45

Are you Hayley's mum? Grin

She seems too sensible to get mixed up with him so hopefully you're right.

MayflowerMaisie · 24/07/2021 20:47

He is very close to David Miscavige, Scientology’s leader. A man whose wife hasn’t been seen in public since 2007.
David Miscavige is not a good person, and by choosing to associate so closely to him TC isn’t either.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 24/07/2021 20:48

I also see Dolph Lundgren as Reacher!
Tom Cruise's front teeth - one of them is in the centre line of his face and once you notice it, toy can't unsee it! Every time I find out a celeb is a Scientologist I feel really disappointed in them.
I like A Few Good Men.

EspressoDoubleShot · 24/07/2021 20:49

He is a movie star not an actor he can carry a movie but not act
He has that special starry quality and lights up a screen, but act he cannot. Personal life and the Scientology cult is obviously very dubious. I’m not not convinced by the Mr Nice Guy persona ,he’s an actor he knows how to fake emotion and behave in a curated way. I read somewhere of movie set staff saying he’s ghastly and prone to histrionic outbursts

TooBigForMyBoots · 24/07/2021 20:51

As much as I'm weirded out by him, he is such a good actor that I get over it quickly. Actual, real Tom Cruise seems like a badly written, poorly acted character.ConfusedConfusedConfused

Escapedescalope · 24/07/2021 20:51

Magnolia, superb in that
