Had a Tom Cruise film on in the background today as I was packing for holiday. It was Collateral on Netflix. It got me thinking about how amazing he was.

When I was a kid in the 80s he was the biggest movie star in the world. He has an amazing legacy that is somewhat tarnished by his association with Scientology.

I loved Cocktail as a kid. How can a genuine movie star just loose a big chunk of their reputation, was it the couch jumping I wonder….the lack of people around him who tell him the truth? I wonder if he sees his daughter?

He was amazing though, I’m not bu about that 😀

He used to be a good footballer and she was always a terrible performer.

Top gun is my favourite film ever, he was just so fit! Love cocktail too. Hate that hes mixed up in Scientology, also he doesnt seem like a very nice person… shame.

He was practically falling over himself to high-five Beckham at the Euro's cup final, so I doubt he was annoyed at Wimbledon.

I'm sure there is, but literally a few days later (may have even been the same day as I read he'd left wimbledon and headed straight for wembley) he was practically fawning over beckham. It was really cringey.

The thing I find attractive about Tom Cruise is he is very confident, capable and fearless. Attractive qualities to me.

I don't know him personally, obviously, so his religion doesn't bother me. Perhaps that is where he gets his confidence.

I presume but dont know; it is katie holmes branded a suppresive person. So when she is an adult perhaps the scientologists will not be able to control that. Or perhaps he is just like all asshole exes and happy to blame his xw but never actually doing anything to make contact

There were a few blind items on TC and DB, with DB being in awe of Tom Cruise and being caught together. Definitely think DB swings both ways when it suits him.

Suri went to see Tom cruise. I remember seeing the photos and read an article about it a few years ago in a hairdressers. I think sure requested to see him

I also find him creepy and he has the definition of a 'shit-eating grin' which he deploys in all his movies as well as in public and which really makes my skin crawl. No doubt he is polite and people can like him on short acquaintance, many narcissists and psychopaths can be very charming and present a very different face to the world than is seen at him. Just read numerous MN threads. The 'aggressive friendliness with dead eyes' is a perfect description.

As an actor I don't really rate him simply because it's always a variation of the same thing. He never truly loses himself in a character so you don't see its him - it's why action movies probably suit him best as they are just caricatures. Many well known movie stars are similar, often those who don't have a theatre background or proper training. As for him being Jack Reacher it's a joke, the book description of the character is so different it's a sign of arrogance that he imagined he could do that part.

The Scientology stuff is really disturbing. The 'Going Clear' documentary along with the Louis Theroux one and Leah Rimini and other survivors stories shows just how bizarre, seductive and controlling it is. L Ron Hubbard was a nutcase. In Going Clear an ex senior member states he was tasked with monitoring Nicole Kidman and then breaking them up. She said she was devastated about the split, it came out of nowhere and had loved him, so who knows if that interference was part of it,. Or she may have been saying nice things to try and keep a line open for contact with the children. Recording her calls was awful and if he comes across as nice in the transcripts it's because he knows he's being taped,surely?

The auditing process for Scientology is incredible detailed and emotionally invasive into thoughts and feelings, and they keep all the records of everything ever said in those sessions. So even if he is or isn't gay or has other kinks he's ashamed about, no wonder he can't leave now.

As for the children, they were 6 and 8 when he and NK split up. It's often reported in the media that they 'chose' to stay with TC but kids that young don't get to choose. And she did initially try for custody but it appears to have been dropped. There is clearly a story there about why she backed off and why she lost contact altogether is almost certainly due to the Scientology. Along with the Katie/Suri split, it's altogether a sad and strange saga.

Definitely an interesting 'how the other half live' situation.And I love the lizard theory.

I wouldn't touch Scientology with a barge pole. They must have some serious stuff on Tom Cruise.

As for the people who query why he doesn't just come out the closet if he's gay, Hollywood is still pretty conservative, and given world wide box office receipts, will not cast gay people in big roles in case the films get banned in some countries.

And it was L Ron Hubbard, founder of Scientology, that said the only way to make a million dollars was to form your own religion.

This is so typical of mumsnet that people skew what they accept as true.
So, newspaper reports something positive about Tom Cruise: we don't know if it's true, reporters are being blackmailed by Scientologists, people are brown nosing, relatives are too scared to tell the real truth.

It did cross my mind earlier the same thought. Because I posted that I thought he had seen her it may be false...but so might everything else.

However we do know Katie did a midnight flit and the divorce was a shock to Tom. We know that definitely is true and I'm pretty sure she wouldn't have taken the decision lightly.

Tom served divorce papers on Nicole who was shocked and distressed. We know this to be true. How do we know he took his decision lightly? People marry, people divorce. If Tom divorces someone, its because he's a nasty abuser; if someone divorces Tom, its because he's a nasty abuser. 🤷
