Had a Tom Cruise film on in the background today as I was packing for holiday. It was Collateral on Netflix. It got me thinking about how amazing he was.

When I was a kid in the 80s he was the biggest movie star in the world. He has an amazing legacy that is somewhat tarnished by his association with Scientology.

I loved Cocktail as a kid. How can a genuine movie star just loose a big chunk of their reputation, was it the couch jumping I wonder….the lack of people around him who tell him the truth? I wonder if he sees his daughter?

He was amazing though, I’m not bu about that 😀

Strangely, I've never liked him as an actor, and find him slightly more palatable in interview. He gives me the creeps as an actor, slightly less so on the couch. I think he is double acting in films- he's acting Tom Cruise playing Reacher. In interviews, he's just acting Tom Cruise.

He did rant but the reason it made such headlines is because that is so not like him. And he did have the pressure of trying to keep to budget and those two could have shut the whole movie down. No excuse for bad manners, I agree, but we all slip now and again.

Can’t stand him. I find him offensive and creepy. Can’t even bear to watch films with him in. That stuff with him jumping up and down in Oprah’s sofa, the Scientology and the PND comments. No ta.

Lots of rumours in rag-mags online claiming he isn't her father. I also read years back they needed counselling making eyes wide shut.

He was fantastic in Rainman,proved he was a good actor.
But I think he's too interested in money hence all the blockbusters.

I thought the yelling about the two metres thing or whatever showed passion for his work.

I firmly believe that his marriage to NK was a marriage of convenience for both of them. I'm sure there was some talk of a 10 year contract almost, following which they'd go their separate ways, she'd had the leg up into Hollywood that an Australian relatively little known except for TV series actress needed, and he "proves" he's straight.

I'm not really a fan but I honestly couldn't get too het up about that incident. It was mid lockdown and hundreds of cast & crew were having to be stupidly careful so that a multi million pound production could continue because, even one case of covid could have been extremely costly. If I was funding that, with those stakes - I'd bloody scream at them too.
I bet the whole thing is an absolute logistical nightmare.

He was never a great actor but he was the perfect star for the 1980s, good looking and seemed so charismatic. Before the weird Scientology shadow started looming so large over him. Now his persona seems a bit put on.

But he's still got a career. Isn't there a Top Gun sequel coming out and no doubt he's making another Mission Impossible.

I don't know if its because he is in the very weird cult that is Scientology,so because of that he comes across so desperate for everyone to like him.

He was amazing at the time but he has since become (and probably was then) very, very weird.

I read he was furious because these 2 put the whole production in jeopardy.
Fair enough I say it affects more than the rich if a film is stopped mid production and he was quoted, I believe, saying that very thing.

The fact he doesn't see his daughter because she's no longer in the cult says everything about Scientology.

He was very charismatic and when i was younger i bought it, and he seemed less "constructed". He seems like a false persona now.

People were commenting that the rant was very much in the style of David Miscavige shouting at Scientology minions. Being senior in Scientology must be a great power kick. Like PPs have said, Tom Cruise has been (confusingly) great in some of his movies.

There was something too about NK's miscarriage- she was supposed to have kept the miscarried foetus as "evidence" that they had had a proper relationship.

See, how many people find him creepy because of the Scientology…and I agree. But before we all knew about that he was nominated for two oscars, now he’s a bit of a laughing stock.

I vividly remember being in Florida in 1990, I was 9 and a limousine drove past (we didn’t see many limousines in Manchester 😀) and my dad telling me it was Tom Cruise…it absolutely wasn’t but I totally believed him.

He makes my skin crawl. The only film I can tolerate him in is War of the Worlds and I have no idea why.

He's really professional at being a celebrity & a film star. I don't like the scientology stuff but have always enjoyed his films.

I'd also bet he's really grey but dyes his hair.

Yes he is a very professional celebrity. There was always a big deal made about how he'd hold up his film premieres for two hours so he could sign autographs for fans. He must have really hated when he lost control of his image.

Reputation loss? Yeah, I mean, he's senior in a religious association which is known as a matter of public record to be allegedly implicated in the terrible abuse of those who are vulnerable and less powerful. Cruise, himself, treated both ex wives terribly, Kidman was alienated of her 1st 2 kids, whilst Katie was lucky to have a crafty divorce shark of a lawyer for a father and obviously inherited his cunning, which saved her from the same fate.
