Had a Tom Cruise film on in the background today as I was packing for holiday. It was Collateral on Netflix. It got me thinking about how amazing he was.

When I was a kid in the 80s he was the biggest movie star in the world. He has an amazing legacy that is somewhat tarnished by his association with Scientology.

I loved Cocktail as a kid. How can a genuine movie star just loose a big chunk of their reputation, was it the couch jumping I wonder….the lack of people around him who tell him the truth? I wonder if he sees his daughter?

He was amazing though, I’m not bu about that 😀

He is incredibly charming,likeable and really does seem so lovely. In reality,he’s a complete psychopath. The church of Scientology have as good as made him their living God. He can act. If you watch him in the film Magnolia he was brilliant. Why he continues to do all the action crap is beyond me. Money I suppose. He is potentially a dangerous man. He’s basically Ted Bundy

I’ve been ‘in love’ with Tom cruise for over 30 years! Not aware of losing fan base? He is an incredible actor and producer. He spends hours talking to fans. Always comes across polite and humble. Sure he he has his ‘own interests’ that people will judge him on. But when your that rich and famous people will judge you for anything.

Hi OP, I agree with you, there are obviously issues in his personal life but I don’t think he’s ever been in a bad film. I really rate him as an actor.

That’s true of every actor. Many have had work done,teeth,skin,body sculpting

Katie must have had something pretty big on him in her back pocket to get clean away like she did. He was all for fighting it out and moving to get the case moved to Los Angeles where 50-50 custody is the default. But in two weeks it was all settled with Katie getting full custody of Suri and apparently has had no blowback from the Scientology lot.

I’m not a fan but one of THE best interviews ever is Tom Cruise and Seth MacFarlane on Graham Norton’s sofa. It’s hilarious and TC comes across really well… just a really nice guy.

The issue I have with Tom Cruise as an actor (totally separate to Tom Cruise as a very weird person) is that I have never seen a film he is in without thinking he is Tom Cruise. He is always just bloody Tom Cruise and not the character he is playing and I first watched him in Risky Business or whatever yonks ago. I am no megastar Hollywood actor but every one has an opinion on the job I do. However, surely a point of being an actor is to bloody act and for the audience to engage with the character?

I loved him as a teen. Loved Too Gun. The Scientology plus his real height put the nail in the coffin.

He was jumping on the couch when he met Katie Holmes, not Nicole Kidman. I do like many of his films , but I think there was something very strange about the way his marriage to NK ended. Also the way KH left him and the way he cut Nicole out of their children’s lives. He doesn’t see his only natural child. I think that says it all really.

I think that's a sign of narcissism. You're good, or you're bad. You're on his side! Or, you're his enemy. You're a winner! Or, you're a loser. In. or Out. Scientologist, or Suppressive. I know you could blame scientology and not TK for the fact that NK was cut out of her first two children's lives but I think it was TC's polarised way of looking at things. On my side! or enemy

Yes, so true. All she had to do was not be publicly in a relationship for five years. (Or longer?)

@Dita73 Some of us do like good action movies and his Mission Impossible movies are getting better and better. Very high quality fight scenes and stunts that be does himself, nice supporting cast. He does some of the best action movies available today. I can't wait for the next one. I think he does them because he simply loves being an action hero and doing the stunts.

I love a good action film but find the Mission Impossibles a bit too slick.

After The Outsiders he had his teeth done and his nickname in the industry was Tom 'Teeth Fixed' Cruise...I like him as an actor, he's done some excellent films, never particularly fancied him or thought much about his private life. He's definitely an odd bod but I've also heard of people who've worked with him who said he's always extremely friendly and professional.

Strangely, I've never liked him as an actor, and find him slightly more palatable in interview. He gives me the creeps as an actor, slightly less so on the couch. I think he is double acting in films- he's acting Tom Cruise playing Reacher. In interviews, he's just acting Tom Cruise.

I love Tom Cruise. Graham Norton says he's his favourite celebrity because he's always so polite, helpful, never forgets the names of the staff and remembers details about them. He makes really enjoyable films. Yeah, I really like him.

Remembers staff names is great and all, but he's in a dangerous cult and hasn't seen his own kid in years because she isn't.

I have a relative who has worked for him on several projects. They don't have a bad word to say about him professionally, in an industry where employers can be notoriously horrendous.

He's very involved and supportive and treats everyone well, he's very well liked as a boss.

I loved Top Gun, Cocktail, Far and Away, War of The Worlds and A Few Good Men. The Firm is one of my favourite films.

I think it’s all about the public image now though and he comes across as a nice guy, but I don’t like the Scientology stuff. He’s usually good on chat shows like Graham Norton.

But the breakup with Nicole and her not seeing their adopted kids is really weird. Then there was the break up with Katie, the sofa jumping, not seeing Suri anymore (well done to Katie for getting out but she's clearly got some kind of silence deal).

All he does now is MI films and they are just getting rather boring now.

I think his career went downhill when they did that creepy eyes wide shut film.
