AIBU-Tom Cruise

Had a Tom Cruise film on in the background today as I was packing for holiday. It was Collateral on Netflix. It got me thinking about how amazing he was.

When I was a kid in the 80s he was the biggest movie star in the world. He has an amazing legacy that is somewhat tarnished by his association with Scientology.

I loved Cocktail as a kid. How can a genuine movie star just loose a big chunk of their reputation, was it the couch jumping I wonder….the lack of people around him who tell him the truth? I wonder if he sees his daughter?

He was amazing though, I’m not bu about that 😀

I don’t know he’s just always given me lizardy vibes. Like if you pulled his hair firmly his face would slide off scooby doo style to reveal a lizard face beneath. I think it’s because he’s so fake.

Got to be honest Pearl, that sounds like a lot of regular churches.
It does however it costs your life savings and expects you to cut off anyone who isn't involved. Families lose loved ones down the rabbit hole.
@PearlFriday Afaik it is knocklyon beside a private detox centre. Hmm
It's an affluent area, love hate was filmed there.
The drug centre they're opening is a bigger concern considering services are so bad I've no doubt they'll be busy from desperate families.

MayflowerMaisie · 25/07/2021 21:38

That sounds like it could be a NarcAnon facility, not to confused with Narcotics Anonymous/NA.

I can recommend the Fair Game podcast if anyone is interested in learning more about the inner workings of Scientology. It’s easy to dismiss it as batshit crazy, when it’s actually a much more dangerous organisation. That keeps many of its members in indentured servitude for years.

Polkadots2021 · 25/07/2021 21:48

Thank you for the Dolph Lundgren photo he's awesome

PearlFriday · 25/07/2021 21:52

Surely people with drug addiction issues aren't a good source of income for the scientologists, why are they getting involed with addiction clinics!? I dont understand their thinking there.

Missedopportunity · 25/07/2021 22:06

@Ijsbear

We get it that you like Tom Cruise, but tying yourself in knots to justify even adult kids not being allowed to see their parents is just that, tying yourself in knots.

Tying myself in knots? 😆😆😆 That would imply I've had to contradict myself to make an argument. I don't think I've done that. I don't know any of these people, nor their lawyers, so I can only go by the own words of these people. We know that Connor and Bella Cruise are in contact with their father, and Nicole Cruise gave an interview last year that she speaks to both of them but she doesn't really talk about them in interviews because they don't like being talked about. Bella Cruise has said that she is contact with Nicole and Tom and said of course I speak to them, they're my parents.

Now I understand that people like to think all of these people are liars or controlled or scared, and that Graham Norton and everyone else who says positive things are liars too, but maybe you could crack your mind open enough to allow for the possibility that he is nice to people around him, NK said she was devastated about the divorce so he obviously hadn't abused her, and that his children love him, not because he's a millionaire, but because he's their dad. My dad was reasonably comfortably off, and I adored him, not because of any money, but because he was the best dad in the world. You don't have to live without coal for a fire to be a happy family. 🙄

Drug addiction is rife amongst the mc too, cocaine addiction is rife within universities.
The well known Irish celebrity who's DS was caught dealing, mind you he got a tap on the wrist unlike a wc boy in the same situation, I heard he was caught with cocaine after that.
It is naive to think it only effects poor people, it's the money from more affluent areas fueling the demand.

tillytown · 25/07/2021 22:48

Only ever liked him in The Outsiders, it's the only film I've seen of his where he isn't giving off odd vibes

Meltinghere · 25/07/2021 23:06

So, he’s not gay 🤷🏻‍♀️

SecondCityShark · 25/07/2021 23:32

I read earlier that Christian Bale based his American Psycho character on seeing Tom Cruise on Letterman.

He said he saw 'aggressive friendliness with nothing behind the eyes'. Terrifying.

Missedopportunity · 25/07/2021 23:55

Cos Christian Bale is known for being such a lovely and friendly guy! Hasn't he been arrested for assault and had a rant under much less pressing circumstances that Tom Cruise. He could have just modelled the psycho character on himself. Lol.

Missedopportunity · 25/07/2021 23:58

And Graham Norton never mentioned Christian Bale as his favourite guest. To be honest, has any host ever said Christian Bale is even nice person, never mind a favourite. Graham Norton wouldn't lie. 😉

Sometimes recovering addicts replace their addictions with something else. If the replacement addiction is a healthy habit that can kind of be a good thing, if the replacement addiction is a cult? Not good at all.

Echo others saying a midnight flit by a wife and child is highly concerning. People don't do that for no reason.

I used to avoid his films but I've ended up watching a couple over the years and I'll admit somewhat reluctantly that he was ok in them. On a personal level I'm sure he is charm personified but agree with PPs who say they wonder if this is an act. He creeps me out and I'm not entirely sure you get to be the right hand man of a cult without knowing exactly what is going on behind the scenes.

I was told a story about someone local to me who once bumped into him and apparently told him to "move shortarse!"
Now I'm not normally a fan of random rudeness but when I heard this I did have a bit of a giggle Grin
Knowing the person who apparently said this, it is likely he would say something like that.
I honestly don't know if it's true but I choose to believe it is just for the giggle it gives me.

Missedopportunity · 26/07/2021 01:06

Rude man is rude to polite man. I think I know who comes out of that story looking better. I don't know why unprovoked rudeness is funny. But nice to know if one if your children were called a vulgar name by a random adult, you'd give a hearty belly laugh rather than be upset. 😃

WhoIsPepeSilva · 26/07/2021 03:58

Aye alright then Hmm

As I said in my post I'm not normally a fan of unprovoked rudeness and if a child of mine was randomly rude to someone we'd be having a discussion about why that behaviour is not ok after they apologised to the person they were rude to.

Finding a little amusement over someone I don't particularly like having a split second non-aggressive rudeness thrown at them hardly makes me the worst person in the world, nor does it make me by default a bad parent who is permissive of bad behaviour. Superman would be envious of your leap there Wink

MayflowerMaisie · 26/07/2021 17:54

@WhoIsPepeSilva - that would have made me giggle too!

hyperbole001 · 26/07/2021 19:50

He said he saw 'aggressive friendliness with nothing behind the eyes'. Terrifying.

In fairness, this is exactly what several posters have described. The whole spending hours greeting fans, detailed research on guests also appearing on the same show as him... You can be as friendly as you like, doesn't mean it's sincere. Seems an indirect attempt by the Church to recruit the rich and wealthy through TC if you ask me.

hyperbole001 · 26/07/2021 19:52

Indeed. His rant was horrific. Funniest thing about it was when he kept switching between American and English accents!
CatherineAragon · 26/07/2021 20:56
@WhoIsPepeSilva - that would have made me giggle too!
I think it’s just really rude, not funny.

MayflowerMaisie · 26/07/2021 22:59

Given all that I’ve learnt about Scientology in recent months, and how deeply involved he is, I just can not get worked up about someone being mildly rude to TC.

Horehound · 27/07/2021 09:19

Who was Nicole Kidman happy to have ended a relationship with? I remember seeing photos of her with arms in the air shouting "I'm free!"
I thought that was about TC?

Eesha · 27/07/2021 10:05

lots of rumours about her and Ewan, plus Iain Glen ended his marriage over her. I met someone recently who knew them both and said both friendly but sadly she was obsessed with looking young

FadoFado · 27/07/2021 10:14

It's a shame NK is so obsessed with plastic surgery as she's such a good actress but her face is sometimes quite distracting.

FadoFado · 27/07/2021 10:14

Iain Glen is hot, hot, hot.

CatherineAragon · 27/07/2021 10:50

I didn’t know anything about Iain Glen. What happened there? I do think NK has ruined her face with all the surgery. Also all the desperate try hard ‘we have a perfect marriage ‘ drooling over Keith Urban is a bit odd.
