Kids don't need a hot afternoon meal in this weather. AIBU?

DSC are here for tea after school. I have two little ones of my own here too.

I have heat exhaustion and the place is a furnace which I've been trying to cool down all day. It's an open plan living/dining/kitchen area so no escaping the heat from cooking unless you sod off into a bedroom.

OH insists we must make a hot meal, well multiple meals as they won't all eat the same thing.

I think sandwiches, crisps, sausage rolls etc would suffice just this once - DSC have had a hot meal at school so aren't going to be malnourished.

AIBU?

Sounds fine to me

DancesWithTortoises · 21/07/2021 17:38

Let OH cook if he wants.

MrsTulipTattsyrup · 21/07/2021 17:38

A picnic is much the best idea! And if DH disagrees, we’ll, you take yourself off to a bedroom and relax while he cooks all the stupid hot meals.

Buckleyourseatbelt · 21/07/2021 17:38

That is what my kids have for tea most days.

MeltingFlamenco · 21/07/2021 17:38

He hasn't listened to me at all and now has the oven on, Jesus wept.

Yanbu. I was considering not even feeeing them as I will slave in the kitchen and they will reject it. In actual fact one has a boiled egg and one has hoops on toast. So basically what you’re offering. They live off bread and veg at the best of times. They’re growing fine. YANBU.

Harpydragon · 21/07/2021 17:39

That sounds fine to me, if DH wants them to have a hot meal, he gets to cook it whilst you go cool off somewhere.

burritofan · 21/07/2021 17:39

Turn it off at the fuse tbh

nc8765 · 21/07/2021 17:40

Sandwiches are perfect in this heat. Your DH is being U!

HollysBush · 21/07/2021 17:40

If you feel unwell, tell him you need to have a cool shower or lay down somewhere cool and let him get on with dinner.

pinkcircustop · 21/07/2021 17:40

Okay, if he’s insisting then he can cook it. If he’s willing to do that I don’t see the problem.

NerrSnerr · 21/07/2021 17:42

Just leave him to it. Go upstairs or wherever's best to cool down.

Pandoraslastchance · 21/07/2021 17:43

Sandwiches, coleslaw, houmous and crisps. It's too hot for anything else.

Picnic teas rock when it's hot.

MeltingFlamenco · 21/07/2021 17:43

The problem was I didn't want to deal with the increase in temperature in here when it's already so stuffy and miserable.

I've come to the bedroom now.

In that case I'd leave him all the children and take myself off for a cool shower and a lie down.

It was his choice to heat up the downstairs in silly fashion.

Tell him to call you down for your tea when it's all ready - and I do hope you are putting in a request for something other than what others want if he cooks multiple meals...

rishisboater · 21/07/2021 17:44

Have a cool bath amd let him get in with it

rishisboater · 21/07/2021 17:44

On* with it. Jesus don't let him in it!

warmfluffytowels · 21/07/2021 17:45

I do think YABU to say he can't cook.

If you're struggling, go outside or somewhere cooler and let him get on with it.

Whaddayahear · 21/07/2021 17:45

Do they even want a bloody hot dinner in this weather?!

I'm having a tomato and basil salad with crusty bread! Fuck cooking.

MeltingFlamenco · 21/07/2021 17:46

I'm pregnant and have heat exhaustion, I've spent too long outside as it is.

I didn't say he couldn't cook I just asked that he didn't on this occasion because it's already far too hot in here.

They have expressed zero interest in a hot meal or anything else for that matter, poor buggers have been struggling with the heat themselves today.

The insistence they have a hot meal is entirely his doing.

YANBU. I had meal planned a hot meal for today. Weather is boiling so instead DS 3 and DH are having a sandwiches and I'm having cereal. Screw putting the oven on and cooking in this heat!

nocoolnamesleft · 21/07/2021 17:49

The only sort of hot meal allowed in this weather is a bbq.

Excited101 · 21/07/2021 17:50

This is weird! Why does he ‘insist’ on 2 hot meals every day?! Does he have any other oddities op?

MeltingFlamenco · 21/07/2021 17:51

I think it's coming from a very misguided sense of obligation that the kids need a hot meal come what may.

He fails to consider that their mother likely wouldn't be cooking one herself either because she has sense Confused
