Kids don't need a hot afternoon meal in this weather. AIBU?

DSC are here for tea after school. I have two little ones of my own here too.

I have heat exhaustion and the place is a furnace which I've been trying to cool down all day. It's an open plan living/dining/kitchen area so no escaping the heat from cooking unless you sod off into a bedroom.

OH insists we must make a hot meal, well multiple meals as they won't all eat the same thing.

I think sandwiches, crisps, sausage rolls etc would suffice just this once - DSC have had a hot meal at school so aren't going to be malnourished.

AIBU?

Where does he sit on gazpacho? Grin

Ifitquacks · 22/07/2021 07:50

It's somewhere between the temps shown in this link, and the ones me and my friends live with. They used to laugh at me when I thought 30c was hot. 40c is hot. 30c is warm... wink

That link says 30 degrees outdoors is ‘feeling hot’. It has been between 30 and 33 degrees here over the past few days (U.K.). So yeah... feeling hot.
I’ve lived in hot countries. Those countries have had air con, and a culture of taking a break/nap in the middle of the day. We don’t have that. We are also unused to hot weather, which means it affects us more than it would someone who has grown up in a hot country. The OP is also pregnant, which raises your body temperature.
So yeah, it’s hot. Regardless of how you think we should feel. Plus as you have said above, you used to think 30 degrees was hot too. So you know how it feels to be hot at 30 degrees 🤷🏻‍♀️.

My two year old has become unwell with the heat now too, poor little thing was up at 5.30 vomiting and has done a handful of times since. I'm so done with it. Roll on next week.

Haven't cooked for days - is he insane? No one wants hot food anyway - I'm living on cheese crackers, peanut butter and fruit , have been for days - leave him to it and hide in a tepid bath with cold coffee and the radio on

anon666 · 22/07/2021 17:33

I'm just loving the unanimity of the YANBU of 98%.

Go us!

😂😂

Makingnumber2 · 22/07/2021 17:42

My 3yo just had a falafel and salad wrap with a corn on cob and some broccoli. So 50/50 of cold and cooked. I think picky bit/ lunch style dinner in this weather is absolutely fine. It’s too hot for much else!

chaosmaker · 22/07/2021 17:45
@doodlebug71 "I'm wondering what MN people on this thread consider warm/hot weather. 25-30c is warm. Anything over that is hot. I get the distinct feeling that UK peeps think anything over 20c is hot. (It really isn't). That's just warm"

Oh I thank you so much for pointing this out. I never realised. I have been sweating my arse off, the dogs are struggling and my poor kids are besides themselves at night due to the heat, but I will remind them all tomorrow that it is just "warm"
We have had an amber heat warning the last 2 days so it very much is too hot for us. Temperature is something you acclimatise to anyway. According to accuweather it is 10 degrees hotter today than on 22/07/21. That's a huge difference!

I have a tub of full fat greek yogurt in the freezer for later :D

chaosmaker · 22/07/2021 17:45

i meant 22/07/20

irresistibleoverwhelm · 22/07/2021 17:47

Nothing wrong with a picky tea, or as my DD calls it, "a plate" [of bits of bread, ham, salad etc.]!

wizzywig · 22/07/2021 17:49

Ltb

Kanaloa · 22/07/2021 17:50

Person at the cooker decides what’s for dinner, everyone else eats up or shuts up.

If he’s so desperate for a hot meal then I’m sure he can make one. Personally we haven’t eaten a hot meal this week. Cold pastas, salads etc have been lovely for us. None of us wants a hot meal at the moment.

TheBigFatMermaid · 22/07/2021 17:54

You could always give the old fashioned 'take it' or 'leave it', as the two options. My philosophy was I got the choice what to put in front of the tube. They got the choice as to what got put down the tube. If they refused any and all offerings, then there was always a piece of bread and butter, a piece of fruit, a glass of milk, and an early bedtime, because obviously they'd be tired. . .

Good for you and anyone else who chooses to live like that. I choose not to. When my eldest DD was still at home, I could end up doing 5 slightly different versions of whatever I was cooking to accommodate everyone's genuine likes and dislikes (not stuff they liked last week, but claimed not to this week).

DD1 is pretty easy going, as is DD2. They will eat all vegetables, but DD1 would only eat chicken or processed meats due to glue ear... DS will eat most veg, but not peas. DP hates all veg except peas. DS will not eat anything with gravy. DP will not eat pasta, tomatoes or cheese.

So, in cooler weather, I will make a cottage pie, pull out some of the mince and onion and add it to pasta, with some peppers and herbs and passata, smother it in grated cheese and everyone's happy. Not much effort really.

Tonight, I will boil some potatoes, possibly eggs too, drain, leave them on the hob and everyone can help themselves to the bits they want for salad. DS won't eat potatoes unless they're roasted, so he'll do himself a 2min microwave rice to go with his. Even easier now they're older!

BackBoiler · 22/07/2021 18:30

Yesterday we had a takeaway..the day before the kids had a plate of "bits and bobs" from the fridge. I had toast later on with peanut butter and marmite. Today I have cooked as I haven't all week and I am now paying for it. Didn't really feel like eating it!

cherish123 · 22/07/2021 18:57

YANBU
Could you go out to get away from heat if he is insisting on giving them hot food.

Barmychick · 22/07/2021 19:01

I'm sorry for you op! The man's a fecking eejit!

Cakeandcoffeea · 22/07/2021 19:11

The most I did was put the oven on and chuck in a few pizzas and make a side salad. No way was I slaving over the hob lol

GYNisaliarWTF · 22/07/2021 19:13

My mum used to sit us on the carpet in the lounge when the weather was nice and give us plastic plates (the IKEA ones) and call it a ‘magic carpet dinner’ (aka picky tea).

We loved it and now have magic carpet dinners with our own DC.

Ps. Send him out for ice lollies and get yourself a hand fan that sprays most of water off Amazon ASAP. I was pregnant this time last year, in this heat. I’m sorry because I know the pain and it’s fresh in my mind! Flowers

Holothane · 22/07/2021 19:59

Since yesterday I’ve been living on crayfish and mayonnaise sandwiches dh if he wants hot he can get it himself but even he’s happy just with sandwiches it’s too hot in this heat.

Merryweather80 · 22/07/2021 20:00

I sent my two to bed with damp muslins on their legs. Seemed to have worked.
We've had ’picky tea bits’ from the fridge all week so far. Except me, I had toast one slice with Nutella the other with lotus biscoff spread because I’m a disgusting slattern. They didn't see, so I got away with my misdemeanour.

VestaTilley · 22/07/2021 20:04

OH can cook the meal then while you chill out with the children.

YANBU- definitely offer them something; sandwiches, salads, quiche, fruit and yoghurts or toast, but no need for a full on hot dinner if they’ve already had a decent meal and in this heat. Far more important is to ensure everyone’s drinking lots of water.

caringcarer · 22/07/2021 21:31

I had a packet of shop bought pastys so if they wanted it hot they popped it into mivrowave and served with a green salad and tomatoes.

Newestname001 · 22/07/2021 21:50

I love a picnic meal. Oatcakes tonight with Houmous, tomato salsa, Hot-smoked salmon plus for dessert, strawberries with raspberries and yoghurt. Followed by mint tea. Yummy. 🌹

me109f · 22/07/2021 22:19

OH is a prat.

Clearly it is now his turn to do the kids meals.

me109f · 22/07/2021 22:22

OH is a prat.
Clearly it is his turn to feed the kids. Put your feet up and leave him to it.
