DSC are here for tea after school. I have two little ones of my own here too.

I have heat exhaustion and the place is a furnace which I've been trying to cool down all day. It's an open plan living/dining/kitchen area so no escaping the heat from cooking unless you sod off into a bedroom.

OH insists we must make a hot meal, well multiple meals as they won't all eat the same thing.

I think sandwiches, crisps, sausage rolls etc would suffice just this once - DSC have had a hot meal at school so aren't going to be malnourished.

AIBU?

Honestly, a hot meal wouldn’t bother me. We are having a bbq, which is a hot meal.

Re the house
You want all the Windows and doors open. Curtains closed on the side of the sun.
I’m finding that if you do that early enough in the am, it’s making a huge diff ce to the rest of the day.

MeltingFlamenco · 21/07/2021 18:38

@Doodlebug71

It's considerably cooler here than it was yesterday. 26c instead of 30c. We've a chicken roasting in the oven. We just picked the veg from the tubs in our garden to go with that.

Lunch was salad. We're sitting out in our garden, reading and generally enjoying the weather, as we do when it's like this. Rain forecast this weekend, so...

18h30... that's it. Glass of chilled white for us whilst we wait for that chuck to roast. Grin

That sounds idyllic to be honest Smile

We don't have a garden so I can't relate, just suffering indoors Sad

YANBU.

I had a chicken on it’s use by date so roasted it 🥵
and DS won’t eat salad. Luckily I can sit in another room to cool off afterwards.

@Mamanyt

Good God. With any luck, one of the little darlings will get overheated and yack up that hot meal all over him. Or you could.

One of the great pleasures of summer in my youth, and my sons' youths, were cold, refreshing suppers on hot, steamy days. I remember those, and my mom's Sunday dinners in the cooler months, more than any other meals of my childhood, and my boys say that they do, as well.

This made me laugh out loud Grin

I just asked eldest SC what his mum makes when it's this hot, he said they have cold food.

Knew it.

Totally unnecessary faff.

@MeltingFlamenco

The icing on the cake... He just came and asked me what I want for dinner this eve, so he's planning on cooking AGAIN when DSC have gone home because he doesn't want sandwiches etc.

I said I don't want anything hot, I'll happily snack.

So if by any chance the place does cool down by 8.30ish he's going to heat it up all over again because he simply must have 'proper' food.

Why do you not just eat together as a family? We all (in our house) want "proper food too. No one here wants a sandwhich in the evening, but we'll eat a light lunch to account for that.

I'm wondering what MN people on this thread consider warm/hot weather. 25-30c is warm. Anything over that is hot. I get the distinct feeling that UK peeps think anything over 20c is hot. (It really isn't). That's just warm

So... what have you fed the kids, if you're sticking to feeding them at different times to you? No, we didn't. Everyone eats dinner (evening meal) at the same time. Usually 7-8pm. Later if life dictates it's later.

OP: you could enjoy a warm salad. I'd recommend courgettes. soft cheese/cottage cheese and peppers or walnuts. Mustard or lemon dressing. Cos lettuce leaves or similar... Wink

SpringRainbow · 21/07/2021 18:46

As a child hot weather meant dinner was some sort of salad. I absolutely loved it.

The kids often have cold dinners regardless of the weather.

I think they prefer them to be honest.

We also regularly have picky lunches.

Doodlebug71 · 21/07/2021 18:47

@MeltingFlamenco: BUgger... I'd invite you around if I could....

steff13 · 21/07/2021 18:47

What about being hot makes a meal better than a cold meal? A meal is not inherently more nutritious because it was hot, nor is it more filling.

Purplepeoniesdroppingpetals · 21/07/2021 18:49

@DancesWithTortoises

Let OH cook if he wants.

Sundancerintherain · 21/07/2021 18:50

Well he is being an arse.
I live in a much hotter country but I dont cook on days hot enough for aircon.
Tell him that heatstroke is very dangerous for pregnant women & for once he can manage with a cold dinner.

EmmalineC · 21/07/2021 18:50

Tell DH to get the barbecue out and take the children outside for sausages and salad.

Neondisco · 21/07/2021 18:51

Jesus he sounds like hard work. Yanbu. It's fucking boiling. No way would I have the oven on in an open plan home.

Holothane · 21/07/2021 18:52

Bugger that in this heat, too hot.

tillytoodles1 · 21/07/2021 18:53

Send him for a takeaway.

ivykaty44 · 21/07/2021 18:53

Same for a cold meal, which is not necessarily inferior or lighter than hot food.

It's almost like the temperature that the food is served at is irrelevant to how good your diet is, and it's not like anyone is being greedy or decadent to have 2 or even 3 hot meals a day nor is it neglectful if DC don't have at least one hot meal a day.

DeflatedGinDrinker · 21/07/2021 18:54

I stuffed frozen pizza in the oven for 12 minutes and dumped salad on the table, that's as much as I can do. Yanbu op

Mummyoflittledragon · 21/07/2021 18:56

Omg you don’t have a garden to escape to later when he’s cooking…. Again. He needs his neck wrung. 😱

Dd and I had a snack dinner. Grapes, carrot sticks, cheese, strawberries, chicken and garlic bread... so the oven went on for 20 mins for the garlic bread. I cooked the chicken early yesterday morning and picked it all off, at the same time did a vat of rice and sausages. The heat then dissipated in the early morning 16C air. I can reheat these thoroughly and nuke the veg in the microwave, not ideal but less heat in the evening. I often cook like this as I’m not well enough to cook every day but it’s especially needed in this heat.

Wonderfulstuff · 21/07/2021 18:59

Defo not being unreasonable OP. My DP has been working outside all day and has requested just meat and salad for tea and I'm super grateful. I have brisket in the slow cooker and will chuck together an 80s salad to go along with it. And then we'll have fake magnums from Lidl for pudding.

Go sit in a cool bath with an ice pop and let him continue his madness.

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 21/07/2021 19:02

What will be do if when they don't eat it?

3Britnee · 21/07/2021 19:09

I'm having yoghurt, nuts and a tiny tiny bit of honey for dinner. Your DH is nuts.

toolazytothinkofausername · 21/07/2021 19:13

Get OH to order and pay for a take-away if he wants a hot meal.

Googlewasmyidea1 · 21/07/2021 19:14

So because you say it isn't hot then it isn't hot? It's currently 28 outside here and it's scorching so yes, it's hot here

Hm2020 · 21/07/2021 19:14

Salad all week here! You poor thing op I was heavily pregnant through a heatwave and it was no fun at all. Your Dh is nuts

Ifitquacks · 21/07/2021 19:16

Is that from the book called ‘the universal truth about what temperature constitutes ‘hot’’ or is that just your opinion?
I spent many years living in Madrid, where is gets really really hot in the summer.
It is 30 degrees where I now live (U.K.) today. It’s still hot. If other people are hot at 25 degrees, telling them it’s just ‘warm’ doesn’t change how hot they feel, or change whether they want a hot meal or not 🤷🏻‍♀️
