DSC are here for tea after school. I have two little ones of my own here too.

I have heat exhaustion and the place is a furnace which I've been trying to cool down all day. It's an open plan living/dining/kitchen area so no escaping the heat from cooking unless you sod off into a bedroom.

OH insists we must make a hot meal, well multiple meals as they won't all eat the same thing.

I think sandwiches, crisps, sausage rolls etc would suffice just this once - DSC have had a hot meal at school so aren't going to be malnourished.

AIBU?

@Excited101

This is weird! Why does he ‘insist’ on 2 hot meals every day?! Does he have any other oddities op?
Oh yes, many.

(ASD spectrum)

So stuck in his ways.

I don't understand why some people think they haven't eaten properly unless the oven has been on. We're having wraps with ham (I cooked a joint at the weekend and we've been eating it every night) cheese and salad tonight.

Blossomtoes · 21/07/2021 17:53

The thought of a hot meal is making me feel faintly nauseous.

MeltingFlamenco · 21/07/2021 17:54

He doesn't insist for our DC, he's happy for them to have a picky tea if i suggest that but when DSC come there must be a hot meal Confused

I'm putting off cooking currently, too bloody hot! I'm close to calling the pub for a tableGrin

Dixiechickonhols · 21/07/2021 17:54

Eat picnic tea with your feet in paddling pool. Leave him and them too it. Is he worried ex will say he’s neglected them by feeding them a nice picnic.

That sounds lovely, I may pinch that idea Smile

Possibly! Although I highly doubt that she would.

I'd be very surprised if she cooked anything herself this afternoon. Most people aren't doing.

I cooked and wish I bloody hadn’t! Never level of sweating going on now! Going for third cold shower of the day!

MeltingFlamenco · 21/07/2021 18:02

I've just gone down to grab some crisps and they're all topless (OH and boys) with the chip pan on, aswell as the oven, kicking out heat like a radiator on full blast.

Insanity.

The temperature won't go down in here for hours now Envy

I read the thread title three times, trying to work out how you could STOP the kids having a hot afternoon!

YAsooooNBU. I'm pregnant and having a dinner of watermelon slices from the fridge, served in an armchair with my feet in a child's bath.

godmum56 · 21/07/2021 18:09

topless and deep frying...should you ring 999 now or wait for the screaming to start?

fakeplantsdontlookreal · 21/07/2021 18:10

YANBU. Food is food here whether it is a hot meal or a bowl of cereal or a sandwich. I don't think that kids need 1 hot meal a day to survive.

Ditto lol.

@MeltingFlamenco even if they hadn't had a hot lunch there is no need for a hot dinner. The temperature of the food doesn't affect the nutritional value of it Confused I never understand people who think a meal has to be hot. I also have huge sympathy for you . I'm about to give birth any day now and it's horrendous. We're having takeaway cos there was no way I was cooking tonight and not much cold food in the house currently

ThePluckOfTheCoward · 21/07/2021 18:15

God he's a muppet isn't he. Why the hell doesn't he just hand them all cold tins of baked beans and spoons, no cooking and minimal washing up. Any chance you could stay somewhere else cooler tonight Op and just leave him to it.

ChittyChittyBangBangChicken · 21/07/2021 18:20

I don't get the "hot meal" thing, unless the weather is cold or at least a bit chilly and damp. In hot weather, a hot meal can make you feel ill. Cold or room-temperature food is just as healthy and nutritious as hot.

Anyway, YANBU!

ejhhhhh · 21/07/2021 18:21

I don't even do mine a hot meal in the evening when it's cold, never mind in this weather. They have a proper meal at school, so a sandwich or something is just like switching lunch and dinner round. Who's got time for multiple different hot meals in a day?

I was around in the heatwave of '76 and this is exactly what we ate! I used to love it Grin
MeltingFlamenco · 21/07/2021 18:24

The icing on the cake... He just came and asked me what I want for dinner this eve, so he's planning on cooking AGAIN when DSC have gone home because he doesn't want sandwiches etc.

I said I don't want anything hot, I'll happily snack.

So if by any chance the place does cool down by 8.30ish he's going to heat it up all over again because he simply must have 'proper' food.

Yikes it's been veggie sticks (different salad veg cut up cos if you present a mixed salad they dont eat it 🤦‍♀️), along with cold meats and either crackers or crusty bread most days in my house

Steelesauce · 21/07/2021 18:27

It was beans on toast in this house tonight, I consider that a half way house of a hot meal 🤣 microwaved beans and toast in a toaster!

Doodlebug71 · 21/07/2021 18:33

It's considerably cooler here than it was yesterday. 26c instead of 30c. We've a chicken roasting in the oven. We just picked the veg from the tubs in our garden to go with that.

Lunch was salad. We're sitting out in our garden, reading and generally enjoying the weather, as we do when it's like this. Rain forecast this weekend, so...

18h30... that's it. Glass of chilled white for us whilst we wait for that chuck to roast. Grin

Mamanyt · 21/07/2021 18:36

Good God. With any luck, one of the little darlings will get overheated and yack up that hot meal all over him. Or you could.

One of the great pleasures of summer in my youth, and my sons' youths, were cold, refreshing suppers on hot, steamy days. I remember those, and my mom's Sunday dinners in the cooler months, more than any other meals of my childhood, and my boys say that they do, as well.
