DSC are here for tea after school. I have two little ones of my own here too.

I have heat exhaustion and the place is a furnace which I've been trying to cool down all day. It's an open plan living/dining/kitchen area so no escaping the heat from cooking unless you sod off into a bedroom.

OH insists we must make a hot meal, well multiple meals as they won't all eat the same thing.

I think sandwiches, crisps, sausage rolls etc would suffice just this once - DSC have had a hot meal at school so aren't going to be malnourished.

AIBU?

Some vegetables have more nutritional value when cooked so I do get a bit worried if DC don't have cooked veg but I wouldn't be worried about having any old hot meal as it may be absolute rubbish.

Play loud music and hose them down with cold water.

After that excitement they will eat anything you put in front of them.

I can’t believe the utter shite that some people put up with (or they feel they have to put up with) on MN.
These controlling men need to be told to fuck off.
I’ve had this crap and it’s amazing how a controlling man will cave when confronted.
Tell him to cook the hot meals himself or go fuck himself.

Only mushrooms and cabbage, everything else is more nutritious raw.
Goldenbear · 22/07/2021 23:41

Peppers and tomatos I thought as well and veg like broccoli, spinach you eat more of if steamed as easier to digest so greater quantities eaten.

Who are these mumsnet husbands? I never meet such dickheads in real life. Not a testicle between them. Why doesn't he just order something if he wants hot food. What a prick.

Christ, really? I define success as a week with a takeout free day. Nobody died yet.

He only cooked fishfingers and chips. They didn't even have enough bread for them all to have sandwiches!

If he wants to cook a meal he can cook a bloody meal.

bemusedmoose · 23/07/2021 11:19

My oven does not go on in this weather!

Lots of salads with cold meats and fish, burgers, hot dogs, yesterday we made sushi. Maybe something quick on the hob like omelette. Absolutely zero need for hot food outside of winter.

If it cools down at night I cook some bits to have cold for the next few days like chicken, sausages to chop up in pasta, some pasta for pasta salad... Buggered if I'm boiling to death in a hot kitchen and making the whole house hotter than the greenhouse it already is.

ellyeth · 23/07/2021 11:55

In this weather I think a hot meal is not necessary, though in cooler weather I would prepare a proper meal.

A picnic-type afternoon tea should be fine.

I agree with those who say if your husband thinks otherwise, let him do it - what are you, a housekeeper?

MrsFlinch · 23/07/2021 12:18

@MeltingFlamenco

My two year old has become unwell with the heat now too, poor little thing was up at 5.30 vomiting and has done a handful of times since. I'm so done with it. Roll on next week.
Hope your dc is ok today op!

It has cooled down massively here today so hopefully it has where you are too!

MrsFlinch · 23/07/2021 12:28

Herd them out into the garden, Play loud music and hose them down with cold water

Sounds fine! Herd them out into the garden with the sprinkler

Op doesn’t have a Garden!

It’s not about whether her Dh can cook a meal or not, it’s about the heat building up in the house. Op is pregnant, lives in an open plan house and does not have a garden to escape to.

If her Dh has the oven and hob on, the heat builds up indoors and with with nowhere to else to go makes it unbearable in the house for everyone!

My partner is northern and we are in the south west, he's not coping at all well with the heat and our little house is very hot! We've not been cooking hot meals, just having salads and cold meat and easy stuff. We've also been out of hot water for about 3 days now but there is no way I'm turning on the water heater right now I think we'd actually cook!

mumofmadboys · 23/07/2021 16:01

Salad, fruit, cheese, ham. Plenty of nutrients in this and easy to prepare

Dillydollydingdong · 24/07/2021 11:21

Tell him that's fine but it's his turn to cook.
