… to ask why Giles Coren hasn’t been cancelled yet?

The vile Dawn Foster tweets ffs. But he seems Teflon coated. He will never be cancelled. Three fucking columns a week … a pissing radio show, albeit on Times Radio, which surely no one listens to. I would love to be proved wrong. Absolutely love to be.

Exactly. Twitter isn't necessary. Unless you are a journalist and even then I know plenty who don't use it.

Terhou · 20/07/2021 23:03

@Hopdathelf

If his career is due to connections and very little else, is the same true of his sister?
Undoubtedly not, she is where she is very much on her own merits. Which does bring into question all the rather grudging assertions about Giles
SeaWitchly · 20/07/2021 23:03

GC's rant to the sub editors -

www.theguardian.com/media/2008/jul/23/mediamonkey

And their reply -

www.theguardian.com/media/2008/jul/29/sundaytimes.pressandpublishing Grin

He is a seriously strange man who would definitely benefit from some therapy, also a clip around the ears and being stood in the naughty corner for an hour or two.

He also strikes me as someone who would benefit from getting over himself and getting a real job in the real world. And consider himself bloody lucky if indefinite articles and unstressed syllables are the things that ruin his weekend and keep him up at night Hmm

SRS29 · 20/07/2021 23:04

@longwayoff

Giles Corey's father was an amusing and influential columnist with a long reach in the media world. Thus we are in receipt of Victoria, who seems OK, and the lovely Giles. Who should have been stood in the corner more often when a child. Talentless, arrogant, spoilt and over-indulged.
OMG feel really dumb for just making the connection....cannot stand Victoria Coren...always feel she's looking smugly down on everyone/thing (love her husband..) Giles is her brother...explains a lot (feel slightly stupid...).....hence why I don't' get Only Connect either Grin

So what's your point? That because you personally don't approve of Twitter it doesn't matter what anyone says on Twitter, no matter how offensive?

But then again, you're the person who finds his child rape 'gag' amusing...

GoodbyePorpoiseSpit · 20/07/2021 23:07

You don’t like what he wrote
You don’t like his columns
It’s not hate speech and being an areshole about someone dying isn’t grounds for sacking them
This outrage about his tweet seems overdone to me. Anyone that loved her won’t give a fuck what that pampered prince has to say.
Save the outrage and cancel actual abusers or those bellends in the MET police who don’t just tweet shit about dead women they violate them
Coren is just a provocateur

MrsPsmalls · 20/07/2021 23:08

His tweet about Dawn Foster is despicable and has now been taken down in a supremely cowardly way. I had no idea he was a food critic in another life. I only know of him in his current life as an unfunny misogynistic Twitter warrior.

JemimaTab · 20/07/2021 23:08

I don’t believe in cancelling either, but I don’t like the man. I did used to actually, I liked some of his reviews and the TV shows he did about 10 years ago with Sue Perkins were OK.
But he does seem to have a very fragile ego. And a low trigger point which means he’s always going on rants about this or that. So that’s kind of put me off him.
His dad was a genuinely talented man. Erudite too, I think he’d pursued academia for a bit before he went into editing/comedy.

exwhyzed · 20/07/2021 23:10

Personally I don't want to live in a land of sweetness and roses where I agree with everything I read and my mind dulls because nothing challenges it anymore.

It's okay to feel disgust, annoyance, fury etc. How boring would it be if we agreed with everyone else's views and opinions all the time. How dangerous would it be to push the threatening voices underground.

Even odious toads need to exist and be heard even if its just for us to understand how others think.

There's a section of men who hate being shown up by a woman. As Atwood said 'men are afraid women will laugh at them, women are afraid men will kill them'.

I can't think of a better example to illustrate that than Coren's tweets about Dawn.

Bryonyshcmyony · 20/07/2021 23:11

And @Classica s post is a great example of social media bullying
Luckily I couldn't give a fuck what you think of me or my posts. Sorry to disappoint

Do you know Giles Coren personally? If not, I suggest that you try to get to a place in life where the 10 year old tweets of random C list celebrities don't anger you quite so much.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 20/07/2021 23:11

Actually that sounds much like many of the MN posts about noisy, inconsiderate neighbours, maybe people on here should 'cancel' themselves!

Mentioning having sex with the neighbours kid as punishment? Really? I'm pretty sure that would get one of the quickest deletions in MN history... bullshit that that's anything near normal on here!

ArcheryAnnie · 20/07/2021 23:12

I don't think he was ever un-cancelled. He doesn't run in the sort of circles that cares about cancelling, so it wasn't going to happen to him.

Think of Boris Johnson, and "picaninnies" and "watermelon smiles". That should have been an end of his political career, and yet - amazingly - it wasn't, because the people who like him don't care about even entirely upfront brazen racism, never mind anything more subtle.

ddl1 · 20/07/2021 23:12

People are entitled to their opinions as long as they don’t stray into hate speech.

But this WAS hate speech.

I disagreed with the cancelling of Amber Rudd. But this is totally different.

Oooh, @Bryonyshcmyony, tossing out another baseless accusation of bullying! Look at you trying to cancel me.

You said you found the child rape gag amusing. Feel free to refer back to your own post if you've had a memory lapse.

Classica · 20/07/2021 23:14

'I hate cancel culture. I'm a free speech warrior'

'How dare you say things that I disagree with, you bully!'

Bryonyshcmyony · 20/07/2021 23:15

Yes, I did think it was quite funny. A bit shocking yes, but I'm old enough to remember plenty of shocking stand up comedians. You can froth all you like

GoodbyePorpoiseSpit · 20/07/2021 23:16

It’s not hate speech.
Hate speech encourages violence against people on the grounds of difference (sex, gender, race, nationality)
Hate speech isn’t hate speech because you hate it

wallpapering · 20/07/2021 23:16

Well if going to cancel him can we also cancel all the blue ticks that tweeted vitriol vile tweets to JK Rowling adding fuel to all the death, rape and abusive she received.

VC-M writes a TV review in the Torygraph and I can't warm to it. I'd like to and I do try, but there's just something about it.

The same can be said about other Torygraph writers and maybe it is a touch of smugness.

GC has a point about the missing article but the way he write it was not right.

PickAChew · 20/07/2021 23:20

@Bryonyshcmyony

You have to use twitter for work? Why? Then why spend time checking *@gilescoren*?

Honestly it's a cess pit

I follow him purely because his twitter is such a car crash. (not that I bother with it much, these days)

I enjoy him when he's on topic (food, though he's no Jay Rayner) but so many of his personal views are pretty abhorrent.
