… to ask why Giles Coren hasn’t been cancelled yet?

The vile Dawn Foster tweets ffs. But he seems Teflon coated. He will never be cancelled. Three fucking columns a week … a pissing radio show, albeit on Times Radio, which surely no one listens to. I would love to be proved wrong. Absolutely love to be.

@Kentuki

Oh that old anti Semitic trope. Jews are nepotistic etc etc. Oldest one in the book, other than we drink the blood of Christian children, which he’s borderline been accused of above, no doubt that’s coming along on the thread more blatantly shortly.

Do you really think he’s shit at his job? His columns and restaurant critiques are deathly boring, his (top rated) TV shows shit? His long career based purely on who his dad was?

The salvo aimed at him above was that he is posh and part of the establishment. He’s no such thing, so now it’s pivoted to nepotism.... which is it?

Are you taking the piss?! Er he’s most definitely posh, he’s most definitely part of the establishment … & your anti-semitism radar has malfunctioned on this occasion regrettably. I’m Jewish, for a start.

@Classica

He's clearly good enough at his job to keep it trundling along but would he even have that career in the first place without his contacts? Which was Dawn Foster's point.
Perhaps not. But he’s now been a journalist for 30-odd years and he’s very successful. A foot in the door is useful (for lots of people) but you need talent too.
forfucksakenett · 20/07/2021 23:59

@LittleBearPad so was Boris Johnson, it doesn't mean he isn't a hugely problematic arsehole.

People like Coren (rich white establishment people for the avoidance of doubt) get their foot in the door and they then perpetuate sexist/ racist/ classist/ bigoted narratives freely without challenge.

Cancel the lot of them.

wheresmymojo · 21/07/2021 00:02

Just popping this here if anyone needs more evidence that the man is a narcissistic turd

See you sound just as problematic.

You have the choice to not read Coren’s articles or listen to his radio show. You also have the choice not to vote for Johnson. But you can’t cancel them - for one thing I assume you aren’t twelve!

forfucksakenett · 21/07/2021 00:05

I'd forgotten about this. What a total fucking twat.

wheresmymojo · 21/07/2021 00:06

And this...

… to ask why Giles Coren hasn’t been cancelled yet?
forfucksakenett · 21/07/2021 00:08

@LittleBearPad I do have that choice. But sadly these people shape our society and contribute to overall cultural norms so it's all our problem whether I choose to watch it or read it or not.

TooBigForMyBoots · 21/07/2021 00:10

WTAF can be so wrong with a person that they do that?🤯

I enjoy some of Giles Coren's stuff and other times he's shit. I can tell by the third paragraph and stop reading, so little time wasted. But WTF possessed him to troll a dead woman?🤦‍♀️ Does he have a problem with substances or something?

SinisterBumFacedCat · 21/07/2021 00:14

I can’t abide him on that hotel program, where he takes the mickey out of hotel staff for the perfectionism that is part of their job. The slimy git.

Can you imagine being one of her friends or family, and seeing his horrible, gloating tweets in those circumstances? Would he actually say that to their faces? Somehow, I don't think he would - and the fact that he's since deleted the tweets shows just what a coward he is. He doesn't even have the courage of his own bile.
Bearsbearsbears40 · 21/07/2021 00:20

@Bryonyshcmyony

I thought he was very good on A House through time or whatever they were called. That's literally all I've seen him in.
I think you are thinking of the Amazing Hotels series with Monica Galetti. The presenter of A House Through Time is the historian David Olusoga.

I like Esther. She has a similar sense of humour to me.

Clymene · 21/07/2021 00:20

He's a repellent little man.

Cottonheadedninymuggins · 21/07/2021 00:25

Ugh, I only know of him because of watching the 12 Drinks Of Christmas almost every Christmas since it first aired - filmed with his brother in law, Alexander Armstrong.

He's a boorish oaf in that so it's more than enough of him but Alexander is warm and lovely that it makes up for it.

Sadly not surprised to hear how awful he is. His impotent anger that the police essentially didn't drop everything to investigate where his car was and prosecute the people who stole it smacked of 'DON'T THEY KNOW WHO I AM!? I'M VERY BIG AND IMPORTANT!!!!'

Davros · 21/07/2021 00:36

@Takingeachday

Have any of you actually read his columns? First thing I turn to in the Times to be honest, very funny usually. His thing is to be controversial and take jokes to the absolute extreme (you’re not meant to take every word seriously). I’m sure he IS a bit of a twat, that’s kind of his thing. But if he was really as talentless as Mumsnet would have it and no one read his columns/watched his telly programmes, he wouldn’t still have a career, whoever his father was. Can’t really comment on his tweets as I’ve never read one.
Totally agree and also can't comment on his tweets.

Back In Time For... , not the hotels thing, is I think, what is meant.

OhNoNoNoNoNo · 21/07/2021 00:46

I really dislike him. He’s a pompous and angry little man. He thinks he is a much better writer than he is. His article are so contrived and self indulgent they make me nauseous 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

Bortles · 21/07/2021 00:55

Oh comparisons to AA Gill? Must be an asshole.

I just read some odd column his wife wrote saying you shouldn't be friends with your husband.

NiceGerbil · 21/07/2021 01:02

Twitter is widely read and what you post can be seen by anyone.

I haven't seen the tweets about this they sound awful.

I remember the sexy daughter stuff.

If I were his employer I would be having serious words/ letting him go.

That's not cancel culture that's consequences.

I mean nothing will happen though.

Some people can say really dodgy things and it's just... Ok somehow.

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 21/07/2021 01:02

I feel quite sad. Not having Twitter (or reading much social media/news or stuff of that ilk) I have based my entire opinion of GC on the Supersizers series he did with Sue Perkins which was extremely entertaining and informative. Basically they dress up and play at living in and eating the food of various periods in history. He was really quite amusing in it, in a rather dry way. The episode where they play at being 80s yuppies (including brick mobile phone and sue's power dressing) holds a special place in my entertainment annals.

I now feel rather disappointed that he sounds like a bit of a nob.

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 21/07/2021 01:13

@DaphneDoloresMoorhead He had the benefit of keeping to a brief there, plus subsequent editing. His tweets were vile - and came directly from his brain. 'HA HA HA HA HA' about a young woman dead from cancer. How can anyone defend that? It's not edgy. It's not funny. It's repellent.

(I'd also just add that the full text of his rant at the sub-editors removing an indefinite article from his writing rather proves the point that as a writer, he is not even up to GCSE standard, and must rely rather heavily on sub-editors to pummel his prose into something approaching readable)

It's unspeakably vile to gloat as he did over the death of somebody, especially somebody so young. I don't know why some posters have decided that her family and friends won't mind that he's done this.
If I tweeted like that and it were reported to my workplace, I think there would be consequences. I think the term 'cancel culture' is ill-advised, as the OP has acknowledged. Facing what should be the consequences of your thoroughly unpleasant actions might be a better way of putting it.
