… to ask why Giles Coren hasn’t been cancelled yet?

The vile Dawn Foster tweets ffs. But he seems Teflon coated. He will never be cancelled. Three fucking columns a week … a pissing radio show, albeit on Times Radio, which surely no one listens to. I would love to be proved wrong. Absolutely love to be.

Yeah I agree ‘cancel’ is a bit of an arsehole way to express it. He should be sacked from The Times is what I am getting at. As other posters have said he’s a fucking disgrace of a human being and certainly not someone who should have a prominent platform in a national newspaper.

The tweets, which he eventually deleted, are screenshotted on Twitter & he is gleefully revelling and laughing at the sudden death of a very talented 33 year old journalist, Dawn Foster, who devoted her career to fighting against injustice. I don’t believe she ever ‘trolled’ him, there is one fairly mild and quite factually correct tweet from her where she points out quite rightly how entire career is due to his much more talented father. He’s a foul, nasty, little talentless man with a humongous chip on his shoulder.

I am just so over him, and people like him, being given such prominence in the media.

But making fun of children being raped and murdered is “amusing”?

ExtraOnions · 20/07/2021 22:45

…because of nepotism - he’s about as funny as thrush

Her tweet was spiteful and uneccesary and his tweets are spiteful and uneccesary.

The beauty of it is, they are both tweets, which can be easily avoided by not being on Twitter.

I highly recommend it for decent mental health.

mowly77 · 20/07/2021 22:47

@Bryonyshcmyony

And I have no idea what he's posted - it's perfectly possible to avoid people unless you yourself are a slave to twitter /social media.
You don’t have to be a ‘slave’ to social media to be aware of what’s going down when you check it once or twice a day as I do. His name was trending earlier & I was hoping his car had been stolen again frankly.

He was at a thing I did once (bit vague). He was really very unpleasant. Disappointing.

Bryonyshcmyony · 20/07/2021 22:49

I don't have Twitter.

Why would you unless you enjoy being permanently outraged?

Checking it twice a day sounds soul destroying

NewlyGranny · 20/07/2021 22:49

Must read titles more carefully. I was trying to imagine Giles Brandreth saying all this stuff.

Classica · 20/07/2021 22:49

Her tweet was spiteful and uneccesary and his tweets are spiteful and uneccesary.

Her tweet was apt and necessary. In case you haven't noticed, we're not living in a meritocracy.

SmashingBlouson · 20/07/2021 22:49

@Bryonyshcmyony

Yes totally agree that cancel culture is bullying.
Agree. I hate the term. It's sounds like a playground tactic to me "I will turn everyone against you because I don't agree with you" sort of thing.

I don't know much about GC, though it sounds like he is quite a horrible person from what people are saying. But still, say you are not in agreement with him, don't try to persuade other people to "cancel" him. I find it a bit desperate to be honest.

What was apt about her tweet? Saying he's only got his job because of his dad? Why does she care? It was hardly the most intelligent tweet I've ever read.
Maggiesfarm · 20/07/2021 22:52

I am out of date but I think of Giles Coren as a food writer, restaurant critic. I remember his father, Alan Coren.

AntiWorkBrigade · 20/07/2021 22:52

I don’t like or endorse cancel culture either, but since that is where we are it’s worth asking ‘why not him?’ Of course, we know the answer to that.

I don’t do Twitter so am not familiar with him on SM, but know enough from from his columns to form a view. Always came across as a poor man’s AA Gill. About as charming and without a fraction of the wit.

Classica · 20/07/2021 22:53

What was apt about her tweet? Saying he's only got his job because of his dad? Why does she care?

Well why do you think she cared? Because as I said, the UK is not a meritocracy. Countless people elevated to lucrative and influential positions based on who their parents are and where they went to school.

Bryonyshcmyony · 20/07/2021 22:53

I thought he was very good on A House through time or whatever they were called. That's literally all I've seen him in.

TheHateIsNotGood · 20/07/2021 22:53

Ooh, I didn't even know he's done something naughty on SM recently - probably because I cancelled 'culture' awhile ago.

I just thought it was a general observation based on his 'voluminous' production of really crap work.

careful folks - be sure you're not just piling in because SM advises you to - none of us want to harm the guy, just think he should consider another career of his own making or whatever else he might be capable of doing.

Bryonyshcmyony · 20/07/2021 22:54

So? He was a good restaurant critic. Maybe he's a twat now.

No excuse to try to get an angry mob to put him in the ducking stool.

MissTrip82 · 20/07/2021 22:55

‘Cancel culture’ isn’t a thing.

That’s ‘accountability’ you’re thinking of.

Adults who can’t accept or are outraged by the fact that actions have consequences have led extremely sheltered lives.

My professional life doesn’t allow me to behave as I wish at all times without being held accountable. You’re in an extremely unusual profession if yours does.

‘Cancel culture’ belongs with ‘woke’ in the folder marked ‘words only ever used by total arseholes’

ddl1 · 20/07/2021 22:56

Must read titles more carefully. I was trying to imagine Giles Brandreth saying all this stuff.

Same here! And I was quite puzzled.

Coren's tweet about Dawn French was absolutely vile! Even if she had unjustly accused him of being a product of nepotism, it doesn't justify gloating over someone's death!

Classica · 20/07/2021 22:56

There will be no ducking stool, because he is part of the Establishment and consequences aren't really a thing for them. He'll continue on with his columns and his radio show no doubt. And his raging insecurity.

Divebar2021 · 20/07/2021 22:57

I can’t stand this idea that “we’re right and you’re wrong” and wrong speak must be punished by cancelling or losing your job. That whole debacle with Amber Rudd and the Oxford Union. Embarrassing - and I’m not even Tory. People are entitled to their opinions as long as they don’t stray into hate speech. People will see him for what he is if he’s objectionable. You also have the right and the ability to respond to him here or more directly to the Times to raise your objections. The Oxford Union had the opportunity to use their enormous brain power and put Amber Rudd on the spot but they cancelled her instead. Moronic.

Oh dear. We get it. You never look at social media. Oh, apart from MN. Well done you, you are clearly superior to anyone who has ever sullied their eyes with it. I have to use Twitter for work unfortunately.

Your idea of ‘soul destroying’ is very different to mine!

What about Victoria?!
Look he’s a twat. But he’s good at his job

Nepotism is everywhere. It’s a fact of life

I personally think he’s funny.

Bryonyshcmyony · 20/07/2021 22:59

You have to use twitter for work? Why? Then why spend time checking @gilescoren?

Honestly it's a cess pit

No tweets are "necessary".
