… to ask why Giles Coren hasn’t been cancelled yet?

The vile Dawn Foster tweets ffs. But he seems Teflon coated. He will never be cancelled. Three fucking columns a week … a pissing radio show, albeit on Times Radio, which surely no one listens to. I would love to be proved wrong. Absolutely love to be.

I went to school in Scotland. My ex-husband was at Westminster School but he is nearly a decade younger than GC so I doubt they ever crossed paths, not that I would ever ask him.

CassandrasCastle · 27/07/2021 21:13

Yay, his house is going to get vandalised while only his wife and kids are at home 🙄 Why highlight as though it's something sort of fun

RaquelOak · 27/07/2021 21:19

@CassandrasCastle I hardly think anyone on MN message boards will vandalise Giles Coren’s house!

CassandrasCastle · 27/07/2021 23:39

I don't think that either, and wasn't trying to imply it

mowly77 · 27/07/2021 23:49

If anyone did complain to the BBC about GC’s continued pratting about in luxury hotels at taxpayer’s expense, as a PP helpfully suggested, I hope you enjoyed the set response that basically said oh but he’s a freelancer not an employee so his personal tweets are not our concern Hmm

@mowly77, that's what I thought they would say. So many people who make programmes now are self-employed or using their own production company. Then of course there is the argument it is unfair to other people associated with making the programme who have nothing to do with GC's personal tweets. Personally I never watch any of these celebrity richness programmes and had GC on my own cancellation list long ago. Though I watched the art one last year but that involved many other people.

HaveringWavering · 28/07/2021 02:05

@Bryonyshcmyony

I thought he was very good on A House through time or whatever they were called. That's literally all I've seen him in.
Back in time for dinner. The series with the Robshaws. I liked him in that too, but Sara Cox was even better when she did Back in Time for Tea, the Northern version.

A House Through Time was an altogether more highbrow programme written and presented by the fabulous black historian David Olusoga.

MyOtherProfile · 28/07/2021 05:46

Oh my word @RaquelOak have you read the comments on GCs wife's blog? She must have been talking about him...

… to ask why Giles Coren hasn’t been cancelled yet?
RaquelOak · 28/07/2021 07:40

The whole thing is just awful. I feel very sorry for Esther as it must be difficult to be married to such a volatile man. And also the fact that she is a really good writer who has made a career of being Mrs Giles Coren. Where can that go from here? Times Radio has about 5 listeners, but who would listen to the Esther and Giles show now?

This article about being in analysis to deal with his anger is very interesting. I imagine Giles is angrily punching holes in the walls of an amazing hotel in Iceland and that it will no doubt be charged to the BBC license payer:

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.esquire.com/uk/culture/news/amp14/the-long-read-giles-corens-case-for-analysis/

Maybe Giles needs to give his analyst a call.

RaquelOak · 28/07/2021 08:58

@mowly77 Hello, OP. Great post! This has been really distracting and entertaining during my period of quarantine.

The comment from the BBC Complaints reeks of buck passing. It’s just another layer of cronyism and corruption. The Director General of the BBC, Tim Davie, used to be Chairman of BBC Studios, which makes … Amazing Hotels.

HaveringWavering · 28/07/2021 09:18

Oh what I would give to know what Sue Perkins, Monica Galetti and his brothers-in law David Mitchell and Alexander Armstrong really think of him now.

Ohfuckitall · 28/07/2021 09:44

Does this bit remind anyone of someone?

Absolutely everything that the narcissist does is done to protect and shore up this protective shield of ideal qualities that they have constructed in order to exist. They will re-write history, if the facts of their behaviour don’t show them in the right way. They will call you a cunt to your face and then three minutes later deny that this happened

They will lie and lie and lie in order to prop up this fantasy person they need to be. They don’t even believe that they are lying. The narrative that the lie supports is so vital to them that the fact of the lie doesn’t even penetrate. No, they were there, that did happen. It has to have done!

If you challenge any single aspect of their faux persona, if you attack any of their mantras, try to point out the inconsistencies in their story, or poke holes in their theory that they are kind or strong or compassionate, they are prepared to literally blow up the entire world to make sure order is restored – i.e. their personality shield is “fixed”*

Yes, my ex!

Tbf though, I have read columns of GC where he doesn't appear to do this. Where he does say that he was a really nasty piece of shit, where when American tv producers asked him to apply to have parts of his history erased from the internet (some sort of court case made this possible apparently) he refused as he said I did do those things and they are shit and I'm not going to pretend I didn't do them.

I've seen articles where GC is critical of himself, where he talks of changing his opinion and position on people (such as people being overweight) in ways that I have never heard my Ex do and never will. My Ex really does have to shore up his own view of himself and can allow no fault or accept no criticism and no blame and no growth.

MyOtherProfile · 28/07/2021 09:47

Alexander Armstrong is his BIL? I didn't know that. How?

RaquelOak · 28/07/2021 09:51

@Ohfuckitall

That description of a narcissist lying in order to prop of their fantasy of them self reminds me of Giles’s deleted Tweet about Dawn Foster: “When someone dies who trolled you on Twitter, saying vile and hurtful things about you and your family…”

Because she didn’t troll him, or say vile things about him.

I don't quite understand your point here. I am just saying more widely that I lived for many miserable years with someone who fit that narc description above to a tee. It was actually quite striking, emotional and helpful for me to read. And there is a contrast between how my H behaved and some things I have seen GC write about himself that my Ex would have been completely incapable of writing as it would have meant dismantling his image of himself as a person.

HaveringWavering · 28/07/2021 09:58

@MyOtherProfile

Alexander Armstrong is his BIL? I didn't know that. How?
I believe he is married to GC’s wife’s sister.
RaquelOak · 28/07/2021 11:00

@Ohfuckitall That sounds difficult and exhausting, being married to a narcissist. I hope you’re ok now. Sorry for misinterpreting what you meant.
@Ohfuckitall That sounds difficult and exhausting, being married to a narcissist. I hope you’re ok now. Sorry for misinterpreting what you meant.
Thanks. Its utter psychological and emotional torture living with someone like that.

RaquelOak · 28/07/2021 11:15

@Ohfuckitall Even though you said your ex was worse the idea of Giles being a narcissist does make me feel quite sorry for Esther as despite the 5 bedroom house in Kentish Town and the country house and the Times/BBC pay cheques it must be emotionally and psychologically exhausting being married to Giles. No to mention embarrassing that he is abusing a dead woman on Twitter. I mean, how would you explain that to your children?

TowandaForever · 28/07/2021 12:25

@HaveringWavering

Oh what I would give to know what Sue Perkins, Monica Galetti and his brothers-in law David Mitchell and Alexander Armstrong really think of him now.
I think it's interesting that Perkins is so quiet about this when she is very vocal about other issues.
RaquelOak · 28/07/2021 12:34

@TowandaForever It’s pretty indefensible though. What would Sue Perkins say? She hasn’t worked with Giles for years; she hasn’t got him a job on Bake Off with her. Is it her responsibility? Has anyone spoken out in his defence? Apart from @mustlovegin and @Bryonyshcmyony! Wink

mowly77 · 28/07/2021 16:16

@RaquelOak I am glad this thread has entertained you in your glorious isolation! Hope you are feeling OK. I personally wouldn't feel too sorry for EW. She's privileged, posh, well connected & has family money. Although of course it would be UTTERLY DREADFUL to be married to GC. But she could always, as MN loves to say, LTB.

I read @TowandaForever to be wondering why SP hadn't condemned him, not why she hadn't supported him.

I'd love to see Sandi Toksvig - a big mate of Alan Coren- give him a good telling off.

mustlovegin · 28/07/2021 16:40

Belsize Park

Raquel I hope you recover soon.

But honestly, your disenfranchised, working class credentials are dubious coming from Belsize Park Confused

RaquelOak · 28/07/2021 17:22

@mustlovegin

What do you mean “disenfranchised, working class credentials”? I am under no illusions that I am either disenfranchised (women have had the vote since 1918) or working class (my parents were diplomats and I went to boarding school). Does living in Belsize Park mean someone can’t be working class? I’m sure one of my neighbours who is an extremely successful FX trader, but grew up in a Barnado’s home would be very interested to hear that.
