To wish England hadn't won (almost)

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?

Oh calm down and stop being so miserable.

I’m proud of this country and I’m proud of this government. If you’re not and you think it’s so shit nobody’s making you live here.

araiwa · 08/07/2021 05:54

So many threads about football that are negative within hours after the first time England have qualified for a final in nearly 60 years.

So boring and predictable

hamstersarse · 08/07/2021 05:54

Are you depressed?

araiwa · 08/07/2021 05:55

@emilyfrost

Oh calm down and stop being so miserable.

I’m proud of this country and I’m proud of this government. If you’re not and you think it’s so shit nobody’s making you live here.

Yeah, you could easily move to another European country... Oh wait
YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 08/07/2021 05:56

I agree with you OP.

I’m glad they won as the played the best game but I hate how this government - of whom I could not be less proud - will misappropriate the win as their ‘will’ or doing (all whilst ignoring the rising Covid cases and blaming the wider population for acting irresponsibly).

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 08/07/2021 05:57

@hamstersarse

Are you depressed?
There’s a difference between depressed and saddened / sickened.
TheQueef · 08/07/2021 05:58

YABU and churlish.

IMO football is shite and it gets on my tits having it rammed down my throat at big tourney times but it makes a lot of people happy so it's tolerable.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 08/07/2021 06:00

It's just some of the fans that are the problem and there are dreadful ones in most countries. There are already monkey emojis being left all over Instagram pictures of Raheem Sterling by disgruntled fans.

I'm pleased to see England in the final.

littlegreybird · 08/07/2021 06:02

it makes a lot of people happy so it's tolerable.

I think that's partly my point. Time was it made me happy at these big events, but not anymore.

I'd love to move elsewhere, but I don't think I need to list all the reasons why this isn't an option do I?

I'm not depressed, but I do think the way this country is being run is causing mental health problems and, I don't know, just sadness, for a lot of people, me included.

GingerandTilly · 08/07/2021 06:02

I sympathise OP as am not a fan of Boris or Brexit either. Nor do I like the yobbish aspects of football. However, I have been impressed by how this team have tried to act as role models, from feeding hungry kids to taking the knee and wearing rainbow armbands.

ItsAllBlahBlahBlah · 08/07/2021 06:03

This sounds like one of those comments from that programme 'points of view'.

Just don't watch it. I'm sure there's things you like that thousands of people don't. I'm not a big fan either but it's nice to see how it's made so many people happy. Come on England I say. Whoop.

Tiari · 08/07/2021 06:03

Totally agree with you OP.

I'm ashamed of this corrupt country and I'm ashamed of this corrupt government.
If I could afford to leave, I would.

emilyfrost · 08/07/2021 06:07

I’d love to move elsewhere, but I don't think I need to list all the reasons why this isn't an option do I?

Then if you can’t/won’t leave, cheer up. Don’t be miserable. Find happiness and joy instead of complaining and whinging because it’s a vicious cycle.

You make your own happiness in life and right now you’re choosing to be sad because we won a football game.

adeleh · 08/07/2021 06:08

@emilyfrost

Oh calm down and stop being so miserable.

I’m proud of this country and I’m proud of this government. If you’re not and you think it’s so shit nobody’s making you live here.

What an utterly stupid, myopic and callous response.
SimonJT · 08/07/2021 06:10

Its fairly standard to boo the opposing teams national anthem, it isn’t something that just England fans do, nor is it football specific.

littlegreybird · 08/07/2021 06:10

you’re choosing to be sad because we won a football game.

No I'm not. I'm saying my mood isn't great anyway and this event, which not that long ago would have been a source of joy to me, is just making the whole situation worse. There's a difference.

OP posts:
cariadlet · 08/07/2021 06:13

I'm not interested in football so wasn't bothered by the result. It's made a lot of people very happy so I'm pleased for the English fans; if Denmark had won, I'd have been pleased for the Danish fans.

I haven't watched any if the matches so didn't realise there was booing during other countries' anthems. That lack of respect is awful. I had heard about the booing when the English team took the knee and think that's disgusting.

All countries have a lot of racists and generally obnoxious people in their populations and football fans seem to include a disproportionate number of vile vocal racists. Even so, I think they're still very much the minority.

I am relieved that there isn't a general election due. Sitting governments - even ones as useless and corrupt as the one we have now_

  • tend to do very well on the back of any kind of feel good factor sweeping the country.
MilesOfSand · 08/07/2021 06:15

@emilyfrost

Oh calm down and stop being so miserable.

I’m proud of this country and I’m proud of this government. If you’re not and you think it’s so shit nobody’s making you live here.

It’s not quite as easy to live somewhere else these days 🤔
TragicRabbit · 08/07/2021 06:17

I feel exactly the same way OP

AbsolutelyPatsy · 08/07/2021 06:18

the booing was not good.
i think it calmed down.
how the penalty came about was dodgy
denmark had a great team, italy will be a tough one to beat, therefore enjoy the win while we can!

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 08/07/2021 06:19

Christ its just football, can we not just be happy for 24 hours without the mention of COVID? The booing happens at loads of matches not just this one. Stop being so bloody miserable.

Onlinedilema · 08/07/2021 06:20

The government have nothing to do with football.
This team and manager are great role models, far better than previous footballers with certain exceptions.
I agree that Boris will drone on about it and try and claim some responsibility for England getting through to the final when in fact he does sweet fa.

IMNOTSHOUTING · 08/07/2021 06:21

@emilyfrost

Oh calm down and stop being so miserable.

I’m proud of this country and I’m proud of this government. If you’re not and you think it’s so shit nobody’s making you live here.

I always wonder if people who make this argument realise how utterly stupid they sound. 1) Most people don't have the option to simply emigrate. 2) This country is their home and they're allowed to have an opinion on it and disucss that opinion. You in turn can disagree with their opinion. If you simply tell anyway who doesn't like the government or the very bad behaviour of some football to emigrate you sound like a complete moron or who can't form a coherent argument and has no understanding of how the world actually works.
JofraArchersFastestBall · 08/07/2021 06:22

It's a fairly miserable outlook that nobody in the country deserves anything good to happen because we're governed by dick heads and a small minority of England fans are horrible, ignorant people.

I'm as ashamed of many things about this country as the next person, but, fundamentally I think most people are decent - including the football team, who seem lovely. I'm very glad they're playing well, and I hope it brings a boost to lots of people.

drpet49 · 08/07/2021 06:22

Get a life OP. Your reasons are pathetic and predictable.
