To wish England hadn't won (almost)

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?

I don't live in an unnamed magical mystery land - although I quite like the idea.

Lots of problems here, like anywhere, but compared to England, I am very happy indeed.

I doubt they'd be too impressed - but did I miss the memo - is this a forum just for English people?

Hdhdjejdj · 10/07/2021 16:32

I’m pretty sure anybody can join mumsnet. Just weird you come on a Uk website to say this Confused

snoin · 10/07/2021 16:33

The 'UK' isn't just England. I am sorry to have to tell you something so basic.

No but you seem very taken with disliking everything to do with England

Bet there’s a better one out there for you that doesn’t has much to do with your hated country

Why are you comparing your unnamed country to England? You're not English and don't live in England. Why are you so obsessed with it? I can't imagine investing so much mental energy into a country I had no connection with;.

Is it some sort of inferiority complex on your part? I think it has to be.

And no, this certainly isn't exclusively and English forum, but the majority of posters are probably English. Would you think it strange if someone went on to a mostly Scottish forum and repeatedly posted on more than one thread about how seeing Scotland lose gave them great joy?

pam290358 · 10/07/2021 16:35

@southeastdweller. I was born with profound disability and owe my life several times over to the NHS, as well as my mobility and ongoing well being. My late husband was admitted to ITU a couple of years ago and received world class care from a dedicated team. And yes it is free, paid for by NI contributions, and with a few exceptions. What would you rather have, the US system which only benefits insurance companies and HMO’s ? Most people in this country only have peripheral contact with the NHS and I can assure you that when you’re really in need of expertise there are no better hands to be in. It’s being slowly privatised out of existence and when it’s gone it’s gone. So many people on this thread ready to throw shit at a country that has so much going for it. Done with all of you now.

suckingonchillidogs · 10/07/2021 16:37

Where on earth are you from?
We're from England
Where you come from do you put the kettle on?

snoin · 10/07/2021 16:38

If seeing Scotland lose gave someone great joy then so be it. I wouldn't be upset about it, or give it a second thought.

Maybe you should do the same when it comes to the performance of a country you've never lived in, in a sport you don't watch?

‘great joy’

You are very invested in England losing

No I can’t think of feeling like this about another country. How odd

snoin · 10/07/2021 16:44

I have lived in England actually.

Luckily, I managed to escape!

How sad for us Grin
Hdhdjejdj · 10/07/2021 16:45

@snoin Did I say the UK was English? No I didn’t. Nor would I.

Hdhdjejdj · 10/07/2021 16:46

Another country’s loss is our gain.

Whatamess582 · 10/07/2021 16:46

Why is any worried about where @snoin is from or where she lives. Let’s get real about this. 70% Irish people in Ireland don’t want England to win. I would say that over 50% of Welsh and Scottish people would rather England didn’t win…. Whether it be banter-rivalry, historical dislike or just plain not wanting to hear chants like ‘two world cups and 2 world wars’ at future football matches… Someone being on mumsnet (which is British but used by people all over the world and of all nationalities) and saying ‘I don’t like it when England wins things’ is not that bizarre.

It may come as a a surprise to some of you but England isn’t well liked in Scotland, Wales, and around 50% of NI aren’t so keen on them either…. Perhaps there is a reason for that.

IcedPurple · 10/07/2021 16:47

Did you get dumped by a hot English guy?

Something has to explain your obsessive bitterness. That's my best guess.

Hdhdjejdj · 10/07/2021 16:49

I don’t think anybody is under the impression England isn’t hated by the other home nations.

derxa · 10/07/2021 16:49

@snoin

The 'UK' isn't just England. I am sorry to have to tell you something so basic.
It's a fact that is so hard for some to grasp. Hence people calling the Queen 'The Queen of England' It's a mystery to me why people think you should support a sporting rival. it's like expecting English cricket fans to support Australia.
snoin · 10/07/2021 16:49

@Hdhdjejdj - You said mumsnet was a 'UK' website. The 'UK' has 4 nations. Only one of them happens to be in the final. Are you suggesting that if a person comes from the other 3 nations they shouldn't be allowed to comment on the England team?

Hdhdjejdj · 10/07/2021 16:50

@derxa for god’s sake, nobody said the UK was exclusively English. But don’t let your agenda get in the way of the truth.

IcedPurple · 10/07/2021 16:50

She didn't say 'I don't like it when England wins' though. She said repeatedly that nothing gives her greater joy (or words to that effect) when England loses.

I do think that is odd behaviour. I can understand not wanting England, or any other team to win, but preemptively gloating about a hoped for loss is strange.

mbosnz · 10/07/2021 16:51

Maybe a name change is in order, to more accurately reflect reality?

From the 'UK' to the 'DK', the 'D' standing for Disunited. . .

Hdhdjejdj · 10/07/2021 16:52

The point I was making was that it was attention seeking to come onto mumsnet saying what you did. Had you said you were Irish, Welsh, Scottish it would have made sense.

snoin · 10/07/2021 16:53

Not sure where my love life comes into it @IcedPurple but no, I've never dated an English guy.

Happily married to a South American. Any other theories you'd like to share, or any more information you feel would be relevant?

Just mildly curious as to why you devote so much mental energy to the performance of just one team in a sport you don't even like.

But my mild curiosity has abated so I'll leave it at that.
