To wish England hadn't won (almost)

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?

@CrouchEndTiger12

It's OK for others to sneer at us though?

The Scottish arm of my family on my dad's side have been posting hateful memes the whole time.

Even stupid things such as so what you did well at football your tap water is disgusting.

What is it about being English that we have to slag ourselves off all the time. It is bad enough everyone does.

Can you show us (I missed it) where anyone said that was okay?
garlictwist · 08/07/2021 07:16

I haven't watched any of the games so I am shocked to hear there's booing in other national anthems. That is awful!

SimonJT · 08/07/2021 07:16

@midsomermurderess

You don't like the government, leave! Blimey, how do people get to be so profoundly stupid. All the education that a country like this can offer, and you still have the intellectual capacity of an amoeba.
Indeed, I believe the posters stance was also the stance of the EDL.
Blueskyemily · 08/07/2021 07:16

It must be really exhausting to find misery in everything all the time Sad

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 08/07/2021 07:17

I think there has always been a small selection on boo-ers amongst fans, I agree ita not very nice but the footballers a pretty well financially compensated for their discomfort Grin
I think it's been a great boost for morale and its lovely to see people happy .sadly , lots of people have become reliant on sadness and bad news over the past 18 months .
I'm dreading the final for other reasons .... my mums English and my dad's Italian. Help!

BountyIsUnderrated · 08/07/2021 07:18

Denmark booed Wales national anthem so they aren't exactly innocent.
Since their player had an incident they've been given half the games. Although I agree the coverage of English football is insane, its pretty much on every media outlet.
You wouldn't see it for any other british nation hence the attitude towards English fans, it comes across as arrogant.

HelenHywater · 08/07/2021 07:18

@emilyfrost

Oh calm down and stop being so miserable.

I’m proud of this country and I’m proud of this government. If you’re not and you think it’s so shit nobody’s making you live here.

Proud of this government?

I don't agree with you OP, but I think it's a pity that Johnson and his cronies will be able to benefit from the uplift in mood and get away with even more abhorrent and immoral decisions.

Thunderpunt · 08/07/2021 07:18

If it makes you feel any better, I was at the Italy v Spain semi final and the Italians did it to the Spanish during their anthem..... so it's nit just the English...

Drivingmeupthewall · 08/07/2021 07:18

@emilyfrost wait, you’re……proud of this government?! 😂

whatwouldsueheckdo · 08/07/2021 07:18

Well if you’re determined to be miserable, I guess you will be miserable.

Personally I think it’s great that there’s some joy to be found for so many in what is a fantastic achievement by the England team.

CoralSparkles · 08/07/2021 07:22

@OutComeTheWolves I’m part English, East Asian and Irish so I’m not your typical English loving White person so your comment doesn’t apply to me. Half my family are immigrants to this country (immediate family) but the rest live in another continent. EVERY country has done shameful things in the past. Most of Western Europe were colonisers and contributed to slavery and rape etc. Britain actually outlawed slavery decades before other European countries and the USA.

Skral · 08/07/2021 07:24

I have lived abroad all my life and I think people are equally awful and equally wonderful the world over. You are not responsible for the behaviour of some of our football fans. Just enjoy the win!

CoralSparkles · 08/07/2021 07:25

@Wellshellsbells go and read some history books about other countries too. Pretty much every country has a dark past.

TheQueef · 08/07/2021 07:25

@midsomermurderess

This thread is the essence if how stupid this site is now. Hoaching with dimwits.
Yet here you are.
nolovelost · 08/07/2021 07:26

Be proud. It's a magnificent moment that's gone down in history.

It's coming home!!!!!!

Roussette · 08/07/2021 07:28

It might be coming home, but we're away on a break, and I really didn't appreciate the drunk guy singing "It's Coming Home" at full volume in the middle of the night under my bedroom window!

TheDevils · 08/07/2021 07:29

I just knew there would be threads like this this morning.

Such misery!! It's must be exhausting to actively search for the negative all the time.

Faultymain5 · 08/07/2021 07:30

@MeanMrMustardSeed

For everyone going on about our corrupt awful government and useless country, take a proper hard look at history and what’s happening across the globe and be grateful that you live here and now.

It’s so ignorant to think that living in the UK in the 21 century is some sort of terrible thing. Yes, nothings perfect, and mistakes have been made, but these negative comments are just so naive.

Hold on I think I can be grateful I live in a country where I’m free to say that:

If it didn’t historically rape and pillage from various commonwealth countries that life could possibly be better away from England; or
If it wasn’t for the intentional brain drain of commonwealth countries and more recently the Eu we would not have the NHS still.

That the current government is so corrupt, no one is surprised by sweeteners given to family members by way of contracts.

That since brexit the underhanded racism I and others have experienced/witnessed over 40 years is now so obvious and yet it’s people are blind to it.

Yes grateful to be able to say that and with all that said and more could be said (i.e Grenfell enquiry/compensation; wind rush compensation). I still like living here. It’s not a race to the bottom and we can’t through stones to hide our hands. Just because somewhere is worst doesn’t mean we put up with not too bad.

x2boys · 08/07/2021 07:30

Typical mumsnet, whilst the rest of the country is delighted England is in the final, me included and I'm not really a football fan
Posters on here are falling over themselves to start these miserable threads 🙄

MagicSummer · 08/07/2021 07:30

I'm with you OP, I absolutely loathe football and all it stands for. I hate the spitting, the hugging and kissing, the histrionics when they lose, the rolling around on the ground in agony when someone has hardly touched them, but most of all recently, this ridiculous kneeling down!

I really hope they don't win because we will never, ever hear the end of it! The endless bus trips, the interviews, the stupid amounts of money they will get, the awards and Knighthoods - all for kicking a ball around!

And the booing by the audience? Absolutely disgusting.

LagunaBubbles · 08/07/2021 07:31

I’m proud of this country and I’m proud of this government. If you’re not and you think it’s so shit nobody’s making you live here

I love living in Scotland and have no desire to move anywhere thanks so why should I move thanks very much. Proud of the Gov, what a joke.

Samcro · 08/07/2021 07:32

I can't for the life of me see a link between lorry drivers and football.
people just love being fun sponges.
I hate football, but ffs after all that has happened, its so nice to see happy people.

Literarydevice · 08/07/2021 07:32

I’m sure Johnson will run with this and will be suitably smug and opportunistic but as DP said at least it’ll dilute the endless covid news for a few days so it’s not all bad. I know nothing about football but even I could see England played well and deserved their win. I know all countries have their racist football yobs. Ours are horrible and it mustn’t be tolerated though.

Rosegoldfan · 08/07/2021 07:32

Will you be like this if we win an Olympic Gold?

Lepetitpiggy · 08/07/2021 07:32

@Itsprobablynotcominghome

I’m just happy wives up and down the country got a reprieve.
Although even if England do win a big match, domestic violence still goes up 26%. If they had last it would have been a lot higher. Phew, eh?
