To wish England hadn't won (almost)

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?

Oh calm down and stop being so miserable.

I’m proud of this country and I’m proud of this government. If you’re not and you think it’s so shit nobody’s making you live here.

I think this comment is stupid. Can I ask are you stupid? Or are you trying to be controversial?

To be clear, it’s perfectly fine to be proud of this government (even though that doesn’t make sense to me).

But if you don’t like it leave? Really?

Surely it would be more appropriate to say “If you don’t like it, what are you doing to make it better?”.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 08/07/2021 06:26

the football team are young players, be proud

girlmom21 · 08/07/2021 06:26

Yep YABU. It's a game. It's a tradition.
It brings people together and it gives us something to enjoy together. It gives people an easy talking point to interact with people they'd never normally interact with. It's doing massive amounts for the economy.

There's nothing political about it. Boris Johnson is prime minister whether you like it or not. I'd be more bothered if he didn't celebrate with the rest of us.

Etinox · 08/07/2021 06:26

@GingerandTilly

I sympathise OP as am not a fan of Boris or Brexit either. Nor do I like the yobbish aspects of football. However, I have been impressed by how this team have tried to act as role models, from feeding hungry kids to taking the knee and wearing rainbow armbands.
You do sound depressed OP. There’s a lot to be sad about at the moment, but as @GingerandTilly said a lot of positives. Flowers
Whinginadeville · 08/07/2021 06:27

How churlish and mean of you

newnortherner111 · 08/07/2021 06:28

Gary Neville applauded the leadership of Gareth Southgate, quite rightly and ironically only appointed because of idiotic comments by his predecessor. Gary Neville also noted the lack of leadership in the country over the last two years.

If anyone is genuinely proud of Mr Johnson's record I would question their mental health.

You're proud of our government? Are you ok hun?
donaldbump · 08/07/2021 06:28

I see your point OP. Not a football fan either but usually get swept up in big matches. This time, with kids isolating for second time, I’m exhausted from impact of last 18months of having to do multiple roles it hurts to see all that mixing of people when we are not properly out of the woods
yet. I would feel better if cases weren’t rising. I know people are not getting sick enough for hospital which is great. I guess I’m tired of the wrong things being prioritised right now and yes also waiting for that twat to jump on bandwagon and claim victory for himself. On the plus Southgate is utterly brilliant as is Rashford and so at least football itself is getting great role models. Still can’t say much about the fans tho...booing Denmark was embarrassing.

tttigress · 08/07/2021 06:31

Look on the bright side Lorry drivers salaries are shoot up due to Brexit!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 08/07/2021 06:32

@JofraArchersFastestBall

It's a fairly miserable outlook that nobody in the country deserves anything good to happen because we're governed by dick heads and a small minority of England fans are horrible, ignorant people.

I'm as ashamed of many things about this country as the next person, but, fundamentally I think most people are decent - including the football team, who seem lovely. I'm very glad they're playing well, and I hope it brings a boost to lots of people.

This. 15, 20 years ago I thought most footballers are arseholes, always in the media for awful behaviour. This current team are a bunch of lovely young men and it's great to see them doing positive things for the country.
Lampzade · 08/07/2021 06:35

I am not a football fan but I want the England team to win because I like Gareth Southgate , Harry Kane and the team of young players who have behaved with respect.
I also love the camaraderie in the team and the joy that the England team has brought to many
I for one will be cheering on England this week

Findingapath · 08/07/2021 06:36

Your not alone OP, I feel just the same.

Proud of this government wow. I won't list the mistakes care homes etc thats another thread.

Op I hate this government too but I am absolutely buzzing about the football. Let's have some comeraderie away from politics. It's the footballers putting in the hardwork not the torys.
Support them on Sunday and lets hope it's coming home.

mrschocolatte · 08/07/2021 06:36

I think I get what you mean OP. And despite what some of the other posters think, it’s ok to feel like this. I’ve been struggling too because certain sections of our ‘fans’ have given me a severe case of the ‘ick’. But then I focus on our team and our manager and what a great bunch of lads they are and I really want them to win for themselves. They deserve it and they’ve worked their socks of this. I’m so very proud of them.

I completely agree. I think the players are great as is Gareth Southgate but I hate the nationalism it brings out in some people.
Weebleweeble · 08/07/2021 06:37

Someone told me that a lorry driver's pay is more or less minimum wage - a train driver gets 60,000 (I think) but driving those huge trucks for hours and hours gets minimum wage. Ridiculous.

AntennaReborn · 08/07/2021 06:40

I agree with the sentiment OP

And I'm also sick to the back teeth of the "it's coming home" nonsense

emilyfrost · 08/07/2021 06:41

@Faultymain5 When you have the attitude that OP has, they aren’t doing anything to make it better. They’re wallowing. Until they realise that and make moves to change it, they’ll be miserable.

Most train drivers don't get that unless they've been doing it for a long time. Exh is one and they start on around £35k.

Awww I loved it as a tune in the 90s. Makes me nostalgic. Just full of hope to me.
chaosrabbitland · 08/07/2021 06:42

yes i feel the same , iv though for a long time this country is utterly shit , corrupt and useless goverment and theres not even a decent alternative to vote for , brexit is a terrible mistake i think , yet it would seem loads of plonkers think its great , . cannot just go and live in another better country for various reasons , but honestly if i won the lottery id be seriously considering it . i guess my feelings are tainted because i wasnt born here , just came as a toddler , so i dont feel english really and i can hardly say i feel the nationality of my birth country either as i didnt grow up there , its a limbo of not feeling any loyately to any country , certainly not this one

NeilBuchananisBanksy · 08/07/2021 06:43

Completely agree. I wish I could feel proud but it just leaves me cold.

I've already seen posts and memes on social media saying 'imagine leaving Europe snd then popping back to win their football tournament'.

Urgh.

gingganggooleywotsit · 08/07/2021 06:43

God! That is so miserable op!

@NeilBuchananisBanksy And those people we call idiots.

Because you know we haven’t—and can’t—leave Europe, right?

Europe and the EU and two separate things.

Zippy1510 · 08/07/2021 06:45

@emilyfrost This government are about as competent as a bunch of brain damaged hamsters rolling around in their own faeces. How on earth can you be proud of anything they do?!
