To wish England hadn't won (almost)

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?
@derxa for god’s sake, nobody said the UK was exclusively English. But don’t let your agenda get in the way of the truth.
Some people use the terms England and the UK interchangeably not maliciously but because they know no better. It happens on here all the time. I'm a Unionist but football is where I can express my irritation about English arrogance. You don't understand it because you are English. You'll never be at the wrong end of jokes about your accent or country.

Hdhdjejdj · 10/07/2021 17:06

I’m struggling to understand the mentality of someone who purposely comes onto a website which (I am making educated guess here) is predominantly used by English people, to say how much they hate the English and how happy they will be if England lose. I mean, for God’s sake, we’ve had a shit year. How unhappy must you be to do something like this.

Hdhdjejdj · 10/07/2021 17:08

For what it’s worth @derxa I am part Irish and believe me when I say I have had a lifetime of being looked down on because of my accent. But again, that probably doesn’t fit with your agenda, whatever that is.

snoin · 10/07/2021 17:09

@Hdhdjejdj - Italy has also had a 'shit' year, in fact, so has the entire world.

I know it's sometimes lost on England, but there is an entire world out there, beyond the island.

Hdhdjejdj · 10/07/2021 17:09

Incidentally, I have also been mocked because of the town where I am from pretty much all my life. On Thursday someone asked me where I’m from and they replied ‘well someone has to.’ So @derxa, you and your preconceptions can do one.

Hdhdjejdj · 10/07/2021 17:10

I know Italy has had a shit year. Which is why I would never tell an Italian I hate them and I hope their team loses.

Your the one judging an entire country on your own narrow minded views 🙄

So why don’t you turn your obsession onto other countries losing?

If Italy was playing Spain for example there’s no way it would give me ‘great joy’ to see Spain win. I’m not that invested

So you are the one who sounds very myopic in your obsession with this island as you call it,

snoin · 10/07/2021 17:12

If you could kindly direct me to where I said 'I hate the English' I'd be incredibly grateful.

I have said I'll be delighted if England loses the match. I have not used the word hate, however.

Oh and England isn't and Island, it is part of the island of Great Britain which includes Scotland and Wales, sorry to have explain such basic information to you...

snoin · 10/07/2021 17:14

I have very neutral views towards almost all other countries, so I wouldn't be particularly bothered about who won if it was Italy v Spain.

Exactly

You are obsessed with England for some reason.

When there’s a whole world out there. Odd

thecatsatonthewall · 10/07/2021 17:20

School friend of mine has lived in Corvara, Dolomites for around 20 years, she says that Italy will be upset if they lose but its not devastating, they have won the world cup 4 times.

I wasn't that bothered a few days ago but remarkably, i ve sort of got behind England, really hoping for a win!
interesting though that in 1966 Wembley was awash with union flags but tomorrow it will be st george ones, wonder when this nationalism crept in?

snoin · 10/07/2021 17:20

No, certainly not obsessed. But I have opinion enough to come to a conclusion on who to support if England happen to be playing against another team.

But, of course, Englanders tend to be quite unaware of how they're perceived internationally. Hate to break it to you, but the world isn't envious of you. Most people raise their eyes, laugh at, or try to ignore England.

Post Covid and with climate change, that world will not quite be so accessible.

What a load of rot.

Of course they do Hmm

I moved to London from o/s so it was a choice. Thousands do. It’s a hugely attractive city for many reasons,

This kind of rhetoric is just embarrassing. What drives it?

And I'm sure Italian fans will be waving the Italian tricolore, being Italians and all that.

Isn't international football by defintion 'nationalist'?

With regard to the English flag as opposed to the Union Jack, that would make sense because it's the England team. Perhaps back in the day there was less sensitivity to the fact that England and Great Britain are not one and the same?

snoin · 10/07/2021 17:48

Well MarshaBradyo and x2boys, your replies perfectly proved my point. Many thanks for reaffirming.

sashagabadon · 10/07/2021 17:51

I remember 1996 well and yes there were complaints from Scots and the Welsh ( rightly) that the union flag is not the English flag so imo the st George flag is the better choice. Just like f Scots were playing the Scottish flag is waved. I have a union flag and a st George flag waving in my garden as I speak so cover both bases Grin ( but I actually not English descent at all and have no actual English blood in me!)

MarshaBradyo · 10/07/2021 17:52

Eh of course it does Confused

I moved to U.K did you miss that, as did many of my friends. So no where I grew up from doesn’t share your pathetic ness. Well normal non-obsessed people don’t anyway.

I find it ridiculous that lobbing bile at the English is so accepted like this on here. It’s rife and shows a very ugly side to some posters.

snoin · 10/07/2021 17:54

Oh yes, the mumsnet rule where it's absolutely fine to be rude about the Scottish (numerous examples of this) but apparently, you dare not say anything even slightly negative about England.

Mention Nicole Sturgeon on here and you'll soon see bile!

snoin · 10/07/2021 17:55
