To wish England hadn't won (almost)

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?

Also- nobody controversial or a twat on the team? Ermm, okay?!

Never realised getting another woman pregnant behind the mother of your children’s back and having sex parties during a national lockdown was quite so admirable? Interesting.

CrouchEndTiger12 · 08/07/2021 07:06

@Orangeinmybluelightcup

Did I really just read a comment that someone is proud of this government!!!!! Why?! How?! I just can't understand that.
Furlough stopped my firm going under as they were able to furlough staff who couldn't wfh.

So many of my friends were furloughed and it saved their jobs.

16 months of the govt paying peoples wages now

midsomermurderess · 08/07/2021 07:07

You don't like the government, leave! Blimey, how do people get to be so profoundly stupid. All the education that a country like this can offer, and you still have the intellectual capacity of an amoeba.

Wellshellsbells · 08/07/2021 07:07

@CoralSparkles

If you hate England so much then why do you live here? Move to another country or stop whinging. People from other countries are proud of their country. Also, every country has done shameful things. England isn’t evilHmm
......Runs off to find history books!
Itsprobablynotcominghome · 08/07/2021 07:07

I’m just happy wives up and down the country got a reprieve.

NeilBuchananisBanksy · 08/07/2021 07:07

@emilyfrost

I've already seen posts and memes on social media saying 'imagine leaving Europe snd then popping back to win their football tournament'.

@NeilBuchananisBanksy And those people we call idiots.

Because you know we haven’t—and can’t—leave Europe, right?

Europe and the EU and two separate things.

I know that. Tell the idiots who think we are superior in every way to Europe. Looking at social media, the result has exacerbated that.
midsomermurderess · 08/07/2021 07:08

Oh, mate.

Halloweenrainbow · 08/07/2021 07:09

I agree OP. The timeing is the problem. Ordinarily, I have no issue with people celebrating their country on a mass scale but the festival atmosphere seems inappropriate in the current climate.

littlegreybird · 08/07/2021 07:09

When you have the attitude that OP has, they aren’t doing anything to make it better. They’re wallowing. Until they realise that and make moves to change it, they’ll be miserable.

Right, so you know from my post this morning that I've never done anything to make the country better and just wallow? Wow... Until recently I was a member of my political party of choice (that's gone to shit now though...), I was involved in my local campaign to stop Brexit and I work in a deprived area on the 'front line' trying to make things better there. I do plenty, thanks. Just increasingly, over the last few years (decade) it's all felt increasingly hopeless and this morning I feel especially down about it.

midsomermurderess · 08/07/2021 07:10

This thread is the essence if how stupid this site is now. Hoaching with dimwits.

DIYandEatCake · 08/07/2021 07:11

I get what you mean, here in this house we’re feeling totally despairing about the state of things in this country. However none of that is the England team’s fault - they seem like good sportsmen with a great manager, they’ve worked hard and should be allowed to enjoy their hard-won glory. I’m happy for them and for everyone it’s given a much-needed boost to. I’ll be pretty livid like you if Boris jumps on the bandwagon and tries to take any credit for it, as it’s bugger all to do with him.
The booing was disgraceful. Even just when the other team had the ball - why show ourselves as so petty and mean-minded? It really doesn’t look good.
Like you I’m really sad about the way things are going. Somehow selfishness, corruption and lying have become acceptable in our public figures and in society, inequality is growing again and I worry about the future for my kids. I love so many things about this country, and most of the people I know in everyday life are lovely and really good people, which makes the way things are going all the more confusing. Who votes for these guys? Honestly, my anxiety is through the roof at the moment.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 08/07/2021 07:12

I know, OP.

This horrible government. It's their fault England won. Any other government would have taken measures to prevent this.

MeanMrMustardSeed · 08/07/2021 07:12

For everyone going on about our corrupt awful government and useless country, take a proper hard look at history and what’s happening across the globe and be grateful that you live here and now.

It’s so ignorant to think that living in the UK in the 21 century is some sort of terrible thing. Yes, nothings perfect, and mistakes have been made, but these negative comments are just so naive.

gingganggooleywotsit · 08/07/2021 07:12

Don’t worry op. We will probably lose tomorrow against Italy. Hope you feel better then and are happy at the thought of everyone being as miserable as you.

whatthejiggeries · 08/07/2021 07:12

I hate football but even I think there's a bunch of miserable gits on this post

LactoseTheIntolerant · 08/07/2021 07:12

I'd be interested to know which country you'd like to live in, which does not have a corrupt government and or other massive problems of its own! Don't be so nieve to think that every other country is some mecca with no issues. We have it a lot easier here then the vast vast majority of countries you actually just sound entitled, in many countries you wouldn't have any rights whatsoever so maybe just try feeling grateful for the freedoms you do have!

StopCryingYourHeartOut · 08/07/2021 07:12

Wow some people really do just see the negative in everything.

CoralSparkles · 08/07/2021 07:12

@CrouchEndTiger12

It's OK for others to sneer at us though?

The Scottish arm of my family on my dad's side have been posting hateful memes the whole time.

Even stupid things such as so what you did well at football your tap water is disgusting.

What is it about being English that we have to slag ourselves off all the time. It is bad enough everyone does.

Exactly. There is a lot of xenophobia towards England from other European countries and we’re expected to just nod and smile and accept it.
Manzanilla55 · 08/07/2021 07:12

Thanks to some footie revellers last night I found 3 empty beer bottles on my drive this morning. Oh well no bones broken and the car is still ok!

Mumofsend · 08/07/2021 07:13

I was in Berlin when Germany knocked us out in 2010. English flags were literally being burnt, run over. Vile things were said because we were very obviously English (we were there on a 6th form trip).

We certainly are not the only ones who act in disrespectful/inappropriate ways.

Faultymain5 · 08/07/2021 07:14

@midsomermurderess

It is small and petty and frankly quite sad not to be able at least to recognise, and even celebrate, others success. You are unhappy about things in your country, that is quite legitimate. Don't carry it over in to this.
She did say almost jeez
FourteenthDoctor · 08/07/2021 07:14

There's elderly people living in Northern Ireland, Kenya and India who may disagree with you about England not being evil.

Interestingly I generally find the people who tell people to leave the U.K. if they don't like it tend to be the same people who criticise immigrants and refugees for leaving rather than staying to improve their country. It's perfectly possible to love your country while equally being critical of its faults. In some ways it's more productive because it helps it to improve.

I would genuinely like to know what it is about our government that @emilyfrost is proud of though. It would do my mindset the world of good if I could think anything positive about the people running the country!

Beendownthisroadmorethantwice · 08/07/2021 07:15

Right so you’re not pleased for a lovely group of young men and an inspirational manager, plus hundreds of thousands of people to celebrate a national team win because you don’t like the government

Bet you’re fun at school sports day.
