To wish England hadn't won (almost)

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?

@AntennaReborn

I agree with the sentiment OP

And I'm also sick to the back teeth of the "it's coming home" nonsense

my 12 year old actually had to endure this awful song at full bore yesterday morning first thing and then again before school finished as her tutor put it on for them to sing along to !! lol needless to say it was only the boys singing and one of the girls tried to turn it off lol , dd said she had a headache when i collected her ,i felt great sympathy , so would i have had enduring that racket
TopTabby · 08/07/2021 06:48

Nice & miserable first thing. I'm not surprised though, anything just anything to complain about & turn political.
Look if you're so bothered, don't watch anymore but just for once shut up & let others enjoy it.

gingganggooleywotsit · 08/07/2021 06:50

If you are negative about a team winning a game that makes millions of people happy and gives them a bit of joy in their lives..you need to take a long hard look in the mirror! It’s not them it’s you. I do think you may have depression or perhaps you have not processed the awful coronavirus situation yet. It has made people feel very down and unable to adjust as things return to normal. Myself included at times. I certainly don’t wish England hadn’t won though. What good would that do?

Words · 08/07/2021 06:50

Me too. My heart sank when I saw they had won. Let's hope they don't win the whole tournament. Johnson will exploit it to the absolute maximum.

As for the booing- that's just sickening and embarrassing.

CoralSparkles · 08/07/2021 06:50

If you hate England so much then why do you live here? Move to another country or stop whinging. People from other countries are proud of their country. Also, every country has done shameful things. England isn’t evilHmm

Faultymain5 · 08/07/2021 06:53

@emilyfrost

Surely it would be more appropriate to say “If you don’t like it, what are you doing to make it better?”.

@Faultymain5 When you have the attitude that OP has, they aren’t doing anything to make it better. They’re wallowing. Until they realise that and make moves to change it, they’ll be miserable.

When you are as low as the OP it’s because they can’t see the woods for the trees. How does telling them to leave (especially during the current circumstances) help exactly?

Begs the question, what was your point of posting again?

So I again reiterate wouldn’t it make more sense to ask what she can do to make it better. That question moves her away from ‘wallowing’ as you put it. Your question simply gives her more to wallow over.

Words · 08/07/2021 06:54

Oh, and I think assuming that someone may be struggling with their mental health in order to express this view is very telling. I agree with the OP, and my mental health has never been better, frankly.

I'm not in any way judging the vast majority who enjoy watching this spectacle- that's fine. I just dislike the enormous hype around it, the poor behaviour of some, and as I said the inevitable unsavoury political exploitation that will occur.

Really? Another oneHmm
GCAcademic · 08/07/2021 06:54

@emilyfrost

Oh calm down and stop being so miserable.

I’m proud of this country and I’m proud of this government. If you’re not and you think it’s so shit nobody’s making you live here.

Proud of a government that knowingly caused the deaths of thousands of people in care homes?

Can I ask, are you aware of having psychopathic tendencies?

Or do you just have incredibly low standards?

Whanganui · 08/07/2021 06:55

Paedos are sickening, not a bit of booing at a football match.

No, just disproportionately populated by the terminally thick, it seems.
eternalopt · 08/07/2021 06:56

The booing is dreadful. "It happens in other matches" is a poor excuse. And there was also someone in the crowd shining a laser pen at kasper schmeichel's face during the penalty. Indefensible. The football has been brilliant. The fans are an embarrassment.

You've just proven OP's point - one semi-final win and you're proud of the Tories.
Whanganui · 08/07/2021 06:57

I hate the cuntry too, & the bastard government.

CrouchEndTiger12 · 08/07/2021 06:57

It's OK for others to sneer at us though?

The Scottish arm of my family on my dad's side have been posting hateful memes the whole time.

Even stupid things such as so what you did well at football your tap water is disgusting.

What is it about being English that we have to slag ourselves off all the time. It is bad enough everyone does.

youaresunshine · 08/07/2021 06:58

I agree op! I'm just not into sport.

midsomermurderess · 08/07/2021 07:00

It is small and petty and frankly quite sad not to be able at least to recognise, and even celebrate, others success. You are unhappy about things in your country, that is quite legitimate. Don't carry it over in to this.

Temp023 · 08/07/2021 07:00

It is very big and very clever, ( even a bit edgy) to find something that excites the masses and be a bit down on it.
Look at me, I’m a bit out there, a bit of a maverick!
Well done, all of you!

this , i agee with the op and i dont really think this country is great to live in and a football win does not change that for me ,but i dont feel chronically depressed or struggling with my mental health
Alann01 · 08/07/2021 07:00

Bloody hell it must be exhausting being so miserable

Roussette · 08/07/2021 07:02

I’m proud of this country and I’m proud of this government. If you’re not and you think it’s so shit nobody’s making you live here

Good grief. Are you suggesting that anyone who is not proud of this Government should emigrate? Don't be so stupid. Do you say this sort of thing to 'foreigners' as well?

Your post has proven that the OP is totally right.
I'm not a football fan, nor a fan of the Government, and no I won't be moving to another country because of that, but I will criticise Johnson and his lot as much as I want, thanks. That's freedom of speech... it is really derogatory to tell people who don't like something to leave the country, it says all I need to know about you.

Orangeinmybluelightcup · 08/07/2021 07:02

Did I really just read a comment that someone is proud of this government!!!!! Why?! How?! I just can't understand that.

OutComeTheWolves · 08/07/2021 07:02

I sort of agree with you. I'm not generally a football fan so I'm happy to be corrected on anything I say here, but the team (particularly Marcus Rashford and Harry Kane) seem like decent guys, Gareth Southgate seems like an intelligent manager who knows what he's doing and has high standards for the team. They've obviously trained hard, are talented men and are making our country proud. There doesn't seem anyone controversial/a bit of a twat on the team like in previous years (Gaza, John Terry etc). So I do feel like they would deserve a win.

Some of the fans I feel have completely embarrassed themselves . Booing other country's national anthems, the way that little German girl was mocked and the laser in the danish goalie's face it's absolutely shameful behaviour and I feel like they don't deserve a victory!

Obviously there's no middle ground where the team wins but the booers and laser shiners aren't allowed to celebrate, so I'll just remain here on the fence!

Essentialironingwater · 08/07/2021 07:03

I completely agree. Can't bring myself to feel anything for the country I was born and raised in anymore. I actually left England last year though.

Willwebebuyingnumber11 · 08/07/2021 07:04

Some people lead very sheltered dull lives if their “hearts sunk” at a football match being won 😂😂😂😂 honestly some people need help.
My DD came home yesterday complete with face paint and a flag she’d made after PE, in very high spirits. All the children in the school came running out happy and elated after a football themed day.
God forbid anything should make our children this happy again after a miserable 15 months. If you’re DC are miserable about it’s, that’s a reflection on the parents.

ITS COMING HOME ⚽️
