To be irritated by people wanting a foreign holiday this summer?

I know some people have family abroad and that is different.

However I know several people who either have second homes abroad or just fancy some sun, and I feel annoyed by them agitating about wanting to go abroad this summer.

AIBU to think they're being selfish?

YABU. I'm desperate for a summer holiday, would love to go abroad.

Not really. I bet there's things you want to do, or have done since lockdown has slightly eased, but I don't give a fuck about.

Just because you don't want a holiday doesn't make anyone selfish for wanting one themselves.

Surely if you usually go abroad then not going for 15 months is pretty hard

Why is it selfish?
We've got a holiday booked and can't wait to get away. We want a change of scenery, some warm weather, good food and away from the pressures of work for two weeks. Don't know why I'm supposed to feel guilty about that

I understand why people are wanting to get away. It’s not for me this year. I couldn’t be arsed with restrictions, testing, possible quarantine, etc. That’s not relaxing enough for me but if people want to put themselves through that, then fine, crack on.

I'm sitting here with the heating on under a blanket watching the rain lash down, after snowing earlier.
Too right I'm going somewhere hot the second I'm allowed to.

You are entitled to think they're selfish if you want to but I will have had both jabs by then, am happy to wear a mask, take tests and quarantine - and will be going if I legally can. We went last summer and it was wonderful, I'm desperate to get away again.

People have different priorities to you...
Some people have had a terrible year

I don't think they are selfish, although I think international travel this year is misguided on a national level.

I don’t know if it is realistic and I personally don’t fancy the chaos at immigration, but I don’t think it is selfish for anyone to want a holiday.

Very few things in life are essential but that doesn't stop most us wanting to do more with our lives than existing

I don’t really understand how someone who has most likely been vaccinated, going to a green country (or if Amber, doing all of the bloody tests and quarantine) and enjoying a summer holiday is being selfish in any way, shape or form.

Yes you are being utterly ridiculous! I've (like many) had a hellish year, far more than just covid, and I'll more than likely have a freaking breakdown without a holiday! I need to relax and get some sun. How you can even care is beyond me, get a hobby

Selfish is the wrong word, but it’s the definition of a first world problem. It’s not hard to not go abroad for a couple of years. It’s just not. People need to grow up and get a grip.

I agree with you OP. And my close family are all abroad so I would love to go visit them. But foreign travel seems far too risky and selfish at this point and this summer. But it will be allowed, people will do it, and we'll be in another covid wave & lovkdown come autumn/winter. Sigh.

I'm a Nurse. I've had a hell of a year as I'm sure plenty others have. I missed my trip to France last year, we hire a cottage with a pool. Every single year its what keeps me going at work and I was gutted we can't go this year. Please explain to me how I'm selfish by being upset I won't have my 2 weeks of relaxation in the sun?

It's not something I want to do, cba with all the extra faff atm. But other people wanting to go abroad doesn't bother me, I don't really understand it (because of aforementioned faff) but each to their own and all that.

It's not a relaxing holiday with all the testing, quarantine, masks etc.

The word selfish has been bandied about so much over the last 15 months that it is has lost any effect.

I haven't had a holiday abroad in years, but I can understand that travel is a big part of some people's lives so of course they are missing it.

Why is it selfish? I've had my vaccines, will test before going and regularly while away and on the way home and quarantine as needed. We tend to go on holiday in remote but sunny places with our own pool etc so we're not mixing with people. I'll come in to far more and frequent contact on a daily basis being at home than I will on holiday.

I have a holiday rebooked for Greece this summer and I am secretly hoping we can't go as I do feel very guilty about going abroad so soon after the European third wave . If it was up to me (we are going with in laws and everyone except me wants to go) I would be staying in the uk this summer. It seems very risky when things are just getting back to normal now to have people jetting all over the place
