To be irritated by people wanting a foreign holiday this summer?

Irishterrier · 06/05/2021 18:18

I know some people have family abroad and that is different.

However I know several people who either have second homes abroad or just fancy some sun, and I feel annoyed by them agitating about wanting to go abroad this summer.

AIBU to think they're being selfish?

Not arsed if people go abroad, bored of hearing people bleat on about it though and how much of a struggle it's been. I'm sure as the demand though for the few countries accepting people will strip supply it'll be bloody expensive.

The “just because you can, doesn’t mean you should” brigade can piss off. Ad infinitum.

ToootToot · 06/05/2021 19:54

Yes YABU: do you have any idea how many tens of thousands of people will lose their livelihoods if the airlines go bust because they can’t get flying? We need our holidays!

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 06/05/2021 19:54

@Aalvarino

I'm so sick of all the virtuous posturing on COVID. What is this?? Some sort of 'who can wear the hairiest, itchiest hair shirt' contest??

Life is short. Go live it.

I have a friend still quarantining food and everything that comes into the house. Someone else still complaining about the number of people out walking past her house.

To be fair, I do 'get' where OP is coming from, travel does pose a risk. But it is unfair to call people selfish for doing something they are allowed to do. Like calling people selfish for going for a local walk during lockdown.

MadKittenWoman · 06/05/2021 19:56

FFS. Sick of this. Why am I 'selfish' to do something completely normal? Went away last year and did the quarantine on return. Will go away this year, will have both vaccines beforehand and will go to a 'green' country. Why do people winge on about 'Well, I haven't been on holiday for 20 years..." So? And? If that suits you, fine.

My family are from a Mediterranean country. I need the sun and heat, to immerse in different cultures, see different sights, eat different food, speak different languages and wear my lovely summer clothes. It is necessary for my mental health. I also go away in Britain on short breaks, but there is no way that I'm spending a fortune on overpriced British accommodation in 15 degrees on my main summer holiday. Just mind your own business.

Wheresmybiscuit3 · 06/05/2021 19:57

Ffs with Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Grin

Thankfully people who think like the OP seem to be in the minority.

I really don’t care if you think people who take their holidays abroad and follow government guidelines are selfish.

I haven't heard a serious scientist say summer hols abroad - great idea! I have heard many serious scientists say summer hols abroad - bad idea.

people need to think about who has got us to the relatively good place we now find ourselves - scientists or politicians/ tour operators.

100% this. With bells on.
murbblurb · 06/05/2021 20:02

I wouldn't even think about a foreign holiday this year - BUT I live in a quiet village and can get outside whenever I want, so I can run my life round good weather days. We had plenty of those last year.

If I was in a city I'd be desperate to escape and I entirely sympathise with those who do.

the economic effect on the travel companies is not the most important thing - plenty of other businesses are suffering. And of course there's the old climate change thing, although I suspect most are really not that bothered. Tough on the next generation but there you go.

CrystalE · 06/05/2021 20:02

@Nomorepies - lets hope you aren't in my lane in the supermarket, vaccine queue or any where else. Unfortunately with an airborne virus we are all in this together whether you like it or not

motherloaded · 06/05/2021 20:03

I haven't had a foreign holiday since August last year, and frankly that's already too long.

I am not even sorry if that irritates you Irishterrier. Why should I be!

@BonnieDundee

YABVVVVU for labelling people "selfish" who just want to go about their normal life and do normal things.

Sick of "selfish" being bandied about to demonise anyone who hasn't hidden away in terror for the last 14 months

Selfish has got to be the most overused word on MN this last year. Fucking ridiculous.

motherloaded · 06/05/2021 20:08

@GojiBerriesAteMyLunch

You won't like me then OP! I'm going abroad in a month! Legal reason to do and having a hol while I'm there. I'll raise a cocktail to you poolside Grin
actually, I don't like you either.

I am jealous! I'd have booked myself in a sport competition or any other legal way and would be away now if I could.

Yogatomorrow · 06/05/2021 20:09

The virus doesn't move, people do. It's not hard to understand. Going on holiday is not a right it is a luxury.

If your life is that bad that you need a 2-week holiday in the sun, then there are probably other changes that need to be made (not voting tory would be the best).

Darbs76 · 06/05/2021 20:09

Of course it’s not selfish. My kids are 17 nearly and 13, we might not have many summers left with DS. He’s 18 next August. We love our holidays, for me a U.K. holiday just isn’t a holiday, I like to see the world and spend some quality time with my kids and for me that means travelling overseas. I also want to go away with my adult DS and my mum, again time is not unlimited to do these things. Already lost my dad. I want to make memories. I’ve abided by the rules and not seen them since last August. If we can’t go we can’t go, but if we can I’ll be jumping on that flight to USA we have booked. So no, not selfish at all.

CrystalE · 06/05/2021 20:10

@MadKittenWoman - when I was a child - going abroad on a holiday was not completely normal.

Plus also, who can compare living through a deadly pandemic to completely normal times. As soon as people get a grip on this the better.

TSSDNCOP · 06/05/2021 20:11

Yogatomorrow · 06/05/2021 20:11

It was people going on holiday last summer that would have contributed to the october/november wave last year, leading to the huge number of deaths this winter/spring.

Totally agree, love our international holidays but this year were going to a caravan park with a largish family party.
