To be irritated by people wanting a foreign holiday this summer?

Irishterrier · 06/05/2021 18:18

I know some people have family abroad and that is different.

However I know several people who either have second homes abroad or just fancy some sun, and I feel annoyed by them agitating about wanting to go abroad this summer.

AIBU to think they're being selfish?

@Yogatomorrow

The virus doesn't move, people do. It's not hard to understand. Going on holiday is not a right it is a luxury.

If your life is that bad that you need a 2-week holiday in the sun, then there are probably other changes that need to be made (not voting tory would be the best).

Why would anyone's life be so bad for needing a 2 week sun break? It enhances lives.

And whatever at your random Tory bash. I voted Tory today, I felt fucking great about it.

Yanbu. It makes me angry. I'm from the UK, living in Germany. Couldn't give a toss you haven't been on holiday for over a year...I haven't seen my bloody family in nearly two years, I miss everyone so much and my ten month old DS has not met his grandad, gran, auntie, uncles yet. We were planning to get back for his first birthdsy in July but I can't justify it to myself considering vaccinations are so slow here and we won't be vaccinated by that point

Pinkpaisley · 06/05/2021 20:15

I wish we lived in a world where decisions on what is and is not appropriate were made differently. This is one of those times where we should be deferring to the expertise of epidemiologists. That is what I am going to do when making decisions for myself and my family.

motherloaded · 06/05/2021 20:15

Put it another way, it would be a lot worst to be locked up this summer than having to go through another winter lockdown (which we won't).

Not going on holiday at Christmas, February sucks, but being locked up in the summer would be very unhealthy and much much worst.

Staying put for the Easter holidays was bad enough, people need to travel.

@Finfintytint

I understand why people are wanting to get away. It’s not for me this year. I couldn’t be arsed with restrictions, testing, possible quarantine, etc. That’s not relaxing enough for me but if people want to put themselves through that, then fine, crack on.
Yes it’s this for me. The idea of going to a country that wants my DC to wear a mask or braving hours and hours of queuing at Heathrow... no no no no, I’m not doing it. But that’s the only reason I’m not doing it, not because it’s somehow the “right thing to do”. Other people wouldn’t be as bothered or would enjoy the beach so much as to make the rubbish stuff worth it and I hope they have fantastic holidays. I’ve got lots booked in the U.K. this summer now so hopefully I’ll also be enjoying myself.
Mahrezis · 06/05/2021 20:16

I won’t be annoyed with people choosing to go if the government allow it. I have chosen not to as I don’t think it’s right at the moment but each to their own.

wonderstuff · 06/05/2021 20:16

It's cold and wet in this country. I have worked my socks off, caught covid at work, continued to go to work when it clearly wasn't safe, and frankly the government and media and lots of people on social media clearly didn't give a shit about my safety throughout.

I have followed the rules, I'll be vaccinated before my planned holiday, the risks will be far lower than going to work during March or December last year.

I think the opening up plan is cautious and we need to start living again.

Your choice to have moved away from your family.

I won't be going abroad (not sure my passport is even still valid) but I don't think that makes sense. Whilst you can debate what is truly essential in terms of travel (and many tedious people have done that) if you're allowed to go then IMO it's a right. I agree it's also a luxury but you can't police that, lot's of things are luxuries.
recklessgran · 06/05/2021 20:19

Yep. I think YUBU.
I've got 2 Greek Island holidays booked back to back with a 10 day gap between just in case of quarantine. I simply cannot wait to get away. I don't care what anyone thinks. I've spent the last 15 months shielding my elderly mother and severely disabled daughter with all the care/shopping etc that entails. I've done this willingly to keep them both safe. I've also worked full time in a very stressful and highly respomsible job. I'm very lucky I know that our family have come through all this unscathed and with all our jobs safe so far. I'm also very aware that there are millions worse off than us but that does not stop me from wanting or needing a break. No, I don't think I'm selfish at all - I've been completely selfless for the last 15 months and now it's my turn for some fun.

Oly4 · 06/05/2021 20:19

Of course YABU. I’m guessing you think it’s selfish because you’re terrified of Covid. The rest of us will have two vaccines and try to get back to normal. Can’t wait for sunshine and fun holidays

TSSDNCOP · 06/05/2021 20:19

Holidays abroad weren't that common when I was a child. What a fine time we had listening to the rain beat on the caravan windows. A country of lumpen cagoules wandering around tediously overpriced sites with steamed up glasses and clutching Cornish pasties. Every year it was like playing Russian roulette whether the sunny morning would stay all day.

Travelling is one of the most amazing pleasures in life, you could even go as far as to say self-actualising in terms of increased motivation and satisfaction. Our country has beauty to make you gasp, but it's even better to be able to soak in the broader cultures of the world too.

lioncitygirl · 06/05/2021 20:20

How are they being selfish.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 06/05/2021 20:20

@ItsCokeFFS

YABU

The people like me who want to see their families really need the flight schedules to be up and running in order to travel.

The airlines aren't going to do that unless they are happy that they can get "bums on seats"

I haven't seen my children, grandchildren, brother or MIL for over a year now.

OP specified it wasn't about you. But go off.
BloodyTinaNextdoorAgain · 06/05/2021 20:21

For those saying it's stupid to travel while the virus is active, when do you think people should be allowed to travel? Is there a point you'll be happy with the risk or only when it's completely irradicated? Do you really think that day will ever come?
If not do you think we just lock all borders and be done with it? Forever? Even if you don't "understand" trips abroad can't you see that will cause massive problems? To our economy as a start.

Surely this is going to be like the flu in future? Where it exists and changes, with new strains each year. And we do our best to control it and guard against it while still going about life as usual.
Otherwise I'm really at a loss as to what future you predict.

bungabungaboo · 06/05/2021 20:24

Yanbu

I wish people would move away from the idea of 'deserving' a holiday

We need to defer our gratification for a little longer

We have sacrificed so much and the numbers are decreasing because of the vaccine

Please, let's not throw this away.

Look at NZ and Australia would you rather be like them or
Europe?

Why can people not wait a little longer

The last thing we need is a variant that the vaccine does not cover, we will be back to where we started

Benfoldspomped · 06/05/2021 20:26

Our holiday is rolled over from the one we couldn't go on last year. If we don't go we'll lose the money. I hope we can go!

grapewine · 06/05/2021 20:26

How long should people stay home for? When exactly will it not be selfish to go on holiday abroad? 2 years? 5?

FTR, I'm not going anywhere abroad until social distancing and masks are gone (I'm not in the UK), but I am curious when this narrative of people being selfish for making different decisions to yourself will shift...

motherloaded · 06/05/2021 20:27

I wish people would move away from the idea of 'deserving' a holiday

technically we could move away from anything more than basic shelter in a cave with tin food and basic survival I suppose

but why would we do that? Life is far too short.

The pandemic has proven that we must make the most of it whilst we can. As soon as we are allowed, I am going away.

We have been banging on about mental health for too long to ignore it now.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 06/05/2021 20:28

I want to go on holiday- l dream about it every day but fail to see why that makes me selfish. Not got anything booked because l cba with the quarantine etc but fed up with people making themselves into matyrs and slagging off people who want to do something they have always done and worked very hard for. Pretty sure there are things you have missed OP but to call you selfish for wanting to do them again would be ridiculous.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 06/05/2021 20:28

I, for one, am looking forward to complete relaxation, outside, in a lovely warm climate away from our home and work. In Greece later this year.

If that makes me selfish in your eyes OP, so be it.

llm24 · 06/05/2021 20:30

Just because you don’t want a holiday doesn’t mean other people are selfish

Travel can be done safely and if people follow these rules travel can start again

The travel industry is massive it’s not just the airlines that are effected by the no travel rule it’s effected down to the high street travel agent / baggage handlers at the airport / airport transfer company etc
We need to get this industry moving again
