To be irritated by people wanting a foreign holiday this summer?

I know some people have family abroad and that is different.

However I know several people who either have second homes abroad or just fancy some sun, and I feel annoyed by them agitating about wanting to go abroad this summer.

AIBU to think they're being selfish?

I voted YABU.

Why do YOU get to decide that having family abroad is different (therefore more valid) than someone fancying the likelihood of better weather?

Why do YOU get to decide that having and wanting to be in a second home—that might need attention after a long year or more of neglect—is somehow selfish?

Why do YOU get to decide anything about anyone?

Sure, it’s your opinion, but everyone has been banging on for God knows how long now about people following THE RULES, and if you’re annoyed that some are choosing to aim for a holiday abroad, what possible business can it be of yours?

What a shitty, divisive, and judgmental thread. This was not a conversation starter.

Enjoy your holiday, if you’re having one. Flowers

I am slightly biased as I have never been abroad and dont wish to but I still feel that we should support our country and , at least this year, holiday here rather than abroad, I know the weather doesnt help but please dont say that if you cant fly abroad it will affect your mental health

Wow OP, you need some help there if you take pleasure in winding people up. Maybe try some counselling or mindfulness? Get a hobby? Football

@Coldwine75

Also all those desperate for their beach holiday last summer definately caused the huge rise in cases and deaths later on.
No they didn't.

The rise in cases came from a wide range of reasons.

Most new cases at that time would have been from increased social mixing in our own country. We were encouraged to go out, eat and drink for less, socialise, meet up,with friends and family, etc. We were supposed to SD but many weren't. Masks weren't even being worn at that point in England either,

why wouldn't you say it when it's true?

Feeling under house arrest or stuck with "staycation" is claustrophobic and not a nice feeling at all, it can be terrible for people mental healthy.

Whatafustercluck · 09/05/2021 17:10

I'd love to go abroad. When we booked in August last year we had no idea this would still be going in. But with a family of 4 we couldn't afford the test for all of us, even if our destination was on the green list.

As mentioned a few times on this and the many(!) similar threads like it, there are industries and people in this country that depend on people from the UK going abroad so it can still be supporting this country's economy to go abroad.
bonbonours · 09/05/2021 17:17

I had one booked last summer and postponed to this because we wanted to have a normal holiday not worrying about masks, restrictions on what you could do etc. Now not sure we can go this year either. The main thing for me is my kids are growing up. If we wait another year, I'm not sure my eldest will want to come with us. It might mean we've had our last family holiday together which makes me sad. Not sure whether to go this come hell or high water just so we can get that last holiday together.

cuparfull · 09/05/2021 17:21

@MaxNormal

I'm sitting here with the heating on under a blanket watching the rain lash down, after snowing earlier. Too right I'm going somewhere hot the second I'm allowed to.
But what are you going to bring back??? That's the crucial question. Perhaps we should all consider holidaying in the UK this year and putting some money back into our economy given the Government has paid so much out trying to keep people jobs afloat.
cuparfull · 09/05/2021 17:23

Bring a variant back and cause more pandemonium this autumn.

Coldwine75 · 09/05/2021 17:24

Id say stay UK and help the tourism industry , dont go abroad and bring back new variants, wait till 2022 things may be better then.............

Portugal will be PACKED

osbertthesyrianhamster · 09/05/2021 18:08

Can't believe how many are still falling for this scaremongering about killer variants. This is here to stay, folks. Locking up hasn't and won't stop it.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 09/05/2021 18:09

There's a booster vaccination around the corner. We're just going to have to live with it and get on with things. Holidays and all.

Pastanred · 09/05/2021 18:30

and as yet not a single varient so far has been shown to evade the vaccine

so what does it matter anyway what strain you have,

Also those saying holiday in the UK for those that can't drive its a nightmare. For me to get to my property abroad I can get a £9 return train ticket that takes me to the airport, £50-100 return flight to destination and €12 taxi to holiday home. Once there everything I need is with in walking distance. For me to get to the UK coast would be more expensive, a long journey posdibly with more than one change of train then I would need to find my way to the hotel which is likely to cost more than the return flight for 1-2 weeks. I've holidayed in UK and there are some beautiful areas to visit but whilst I can still fly I will enjoy the sun on my face and the sangria/wine/strawberry daiquiri/Tropical beer down my throat. I also had a trip to US cancelled last year along with concerts and road trips to visit national parks etc along with my BFF of 45+ years, who lives there, that I had been saving for for a few years so once safe to do so will be rebooking that 😉

bossyrossy · 09/05/2021 19:45

How do you feel about queuing for 7 hours or more in the arrivals hall at the airport?

The tourism industry doesn't just depend on UK holidays....

Better than not having a holiday at all, or having to pretend a week or 2 in the UK somewhere is a "holiday" Grin
Moonstone1234 · 09/05/2021 20:07

Honestly the UK will be hell this summer. Roads grid locked, service stations rammed. We are going down to Cornwall but will be leaving circa 0700 to see relatives and won’t be stopping. It could take 7-10 hours to drive to places like this. We are OK leaving and organising ourselves to leave early. Speaking to some people at work they shrug and say that they are Incapable of leaving earlier than 10.

If I could go abroad I would like a shot. Better than rip off UK with inflated pricing and the weather is a huge turn off.

What type of moron thinks that holidaying in the UK is a "pretend" holiday? Probably someone who gives not a s##t about others or then planet and is a entitled selfish c##t.

Because of Dhs job I have lived in a lot of major towns and cities all over England snd Wales and I have to say after a bit they all sort of blur into one another.
They all have the same chain shops and restaurants in a lot of cases in the same layout I.e Boots is always next to Smiths quite near a department store. There’s a Primark and a River Island and a Next.

Seaside towns have the same sorts of shops on the front selling beachside plastic or sugary tat.

It really is depressing when you start to travel around.

Certainly someone stupid enough to want to endure 7 hours queue in a crowded arrival hall.

Or a troll.
