To be irritated by people wanting a foreign holiday this summer?

Irishterrier · 06/05/2021 18:18

I know some people have family abroad and that is different.

However I know several people who either have second homes abroad or just fancy some sun, and I feel annoyed by them agitating about wanting to go abroad this summer.

AIBU to think they're being selfish?

OP posts:

@BloodyTinaNextdoorAgain
I’m sure you are sick and tired of hearing people call you selfish for wanting your industry to survive and for you to continue to be able to pay your mortgage / bills / put food on the table.

The travel industry brings in billions into this country and employs millions of people. Not to mention People’s soggy week in Skegness won’t save the domestic travel industry (but I don’t judge them - they like what they like and that’s fine!!).

I do wonder when people will stop trying to control others actions and thoughts - first we had people snitching on their neighbours, then they are being told they are granny killers for going out for a walk twice instead of once a day and now they selfish for wanting a bit of normality. Time to move on OP and find another hill to die on.

P.S No vaccines have been proved to be ineffective against any variants.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 06/05/2021 19:04

Depends where you stay too. Like a pp we’re in a private villa with a pool and hire car. We have reached a point where the mental impact is such that many people are just existing not living. Covid is here to stay - I’m not intending on staying cooped up in the uk if I don’t have to.

CharlotteRose90 · 06/05/2021 19:04

@randomer

My son lives in Spain, I miss him so much.

I suppose if I go I'm selfish.

You definitely aren’t selfish I haven’t seen my family since December 2019. I will be going on the first plane I can and anyone that calls me selfish will wish they didn’t .
Mrsdarwin · 06/05/2021 19:06

We have a holiday booked as it’s moved from 2020. While I don’t think I would have booked one this year but I am excited to get away. We are prepared to do tests / self isolate if needed any follow all the guidelines.

New strains are going to happen all the time, even within the UK that’s how viruses work. So are all people in the UK mixing and potentially helping to generate a new strain also irritating?

If we are helping an industry on its knees to get going, protecting people’s jobs and getting the economy going how is that bad?
If people have family abroad, these flights won’t happen at 5% capacity, they need other people to be going to make it happen.

The new rules have a risk based approach and make sense to me, if people are being Covid tested before leaving the country and before they return aren’t they actually less risk than someone going to wales for the week who isn’t testing at any time?

CharlotteRose90 · 06/05/2021 19:07

@BloodyTinaNextdoorAgain

Yes yabvu. I work in travel and I'm sorry if my wanting to keep my job, be able to feed my family and keep a roof over our heads is an irritant to you. Why do people never consider the bigger picture in these stupid posts? There are many thousands of people in this country who work in the travel industry in this country in some form or another. Some have made next to nothing in over a year, some have made literally nothing this year. And the scale of it is clearly larger than you have ever thought. Past the travel agents you have ticketing teams, many admin, support and call centre staff, baggage handlers, airport cleaners... The knock on effect of people not leaving the country is massive and once it is safe to do so and vaccinations are rolled out I very much hope people think of going further than another wet week in Cornwall where no one wants you anyway.
Thank you for putting the words better then me. I work for an airline at the airport and the travel industry has taken such a battering no one can understand. I’ve been lucky to keep my job but i know thousands that haven’t and it’s heartbreaking. I’m sick of holidaying in rainy England. I’ve had my vaccines so as soon as the borders open I and millions others will be travelling. This year has been hell we all deserve life and holidays to go back to Normal.
SwedishK · 06/05/2021 19:08

I felt like you when friends flew off to Dubai over Christmas. At that point it felt completely idiotic, when the rest of us were hunkering down and doing our very best to not worsen the spread. I think that at this point in the pandemic it’s a totally different story as it finally feels like we have some control of the spread. I am hoping to go and see my family finally this summer and if it feels safe, I might even jump on the Eurostar and go to Paris at the end of the summer.

ImInStealthMode · 06/05/2021 19:10

@Carycy Am I reading it wrong or are you really suggesting that everyone who has family in a different country is 'jetset' and 'living it up'?

Wow Confused

MrsHastingslikethebattle · 06/05/2021 19:12

YABU.

None of your business what other people do. Most will be fully vaccinated and theres strong evidence that vaccines reduce transmission.

Places like Spain who rely on British tourism will go under and lose their businesses. I'm sure a lot of them would take their chances with a virus with a 99% survival rate if it means keeping their heads above water.

Cocolemon · 06/05/2021 19:12

I would not use the word selfish, but unwise.

We are in the middle of a global pandemic and we risk introducing/ bring back variants which risk the vaccination programme being successful.

I get it:

Travel Industry needs help
People have had a horrific year and need to relax - I work in the nhs frontline myself.

I still think it's madness and will not be going abroad until globally we are in a much better place.

GiveMeTulipsfromAmsterdam · 06/05/2021 19:13

Why is it selfish to want to go on holiday? Jealously isn't nice. You actually 'get annoyed' because some people 'want some sun' - wow - maybe they have worked hard/cared for children and loved ones/lost loved ones - who knows and it really isn't important.

Get 'annoyed' about more important things than people hoping to go and get some sun!

Carycy · 06/05/2021 19:13

No but let’s face it if you have family abroad and you get to go visit them you are getting a holiday and a break from your 4 walls and shite English weather.

GiveMeTulipsfromAmsterdam · 06/05/2021 19:15

Actually I will go one step further -

You are the selfish one - selfish that you don't want the holiday industry to survive...selfish to deny others pleasure.... selfish because you are unable to realise that lots of people work in the holiday industry and have mortgages and bills to pay.

Newmama29 · 06/05/2021 19:17

Considering it’s May & there was fucking sleet today (Scotland) YABU.

We’ve had a tough year - stepdad went through cancer treatment, we had our first baby & a traumatic labour which resulted in some health problems for me & baby (all fine now), my DP has worked his butt off constantly throughout the whole pandemic with about 2 weeks max off. We want a holiday as a family to enjoy the nice weather & some chill time, without the stresses of the household & the miserable weather that Scotland brings!

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 06/05/2021 19:17

Staying here in the rain to be charged £1000 a week for some below average place in Cornwall with every other bugger in the U.K. whilst the locals shoot us daggers for being on ‘their’ beach? Fuck that. Got my finger on the online booking trigger for when the green list announced. Guaranteed weather, better service and cheaper.

The government flew in the Covid infected Indian delegation for the G7 meeting just 2 days ago which they could’ve held over Teams. If people are invited to come here from known Covid hotspots then I don’t feel guilty about taking my family on holiday.

BusyLizzie61 · 06/05/2021 19:18

@Irishterrier
I entirely agree with you.
All those that are saying how much they need one, obviously don't understand the difference between need and want!
I am astonished that we seem to have learned nothing and are letting people in and out of the country.
There really should be, imo, Restrictions on all entry to the UK. And returning from an unnecessary holiday wouldn't be a justification OR everyone having to quarantine in a hotel.
It's madness. Throughout the news there are stories of how people are trying to get around the rules. And sadly this is probably going to only go one way.
Surely we'd better off with no travel this year. Let the rest of the world get to grips with vaccinating etc. Then hopefully next year the landscape would be different. If the situation isn't improved, then really it's not going to hurt anyone if they can't leave the UK for their holiday is it?

itsgettingwierd · 06/05/2021 19:20

I'm beginning to feel the same.

I was always in the camp of "no way should it be allowed".

However I think massive improvements have been made with regards safe routes, quarantine and monitoring arrivals.

In fact I would go if it wasn't for them stating queues in U.K. will be up to 10 hours.

I've been looking at my 2 local airports or if have to use London if there is any disability arrangements for those who can't queue for that time.

It's a pipe dream though I think as cost will be high and I'm still weary of the risks involved with countries moving lists.

But I'm fully vaccinated and ds will be fully by July.

Roselilly36 · 06/05/2021 19:20

I don’t think they are selfish for wanting a holiday abroad this summer at all, that is normal for lots and families, if they can get away why not. Personally I wouldn’t bother due to the restrictions, but if others want to go, that’s fine.

Takemetothebar · 06/05/2021 19:23

ODFO.

I really can’t be bothered with attitudes like yours any more. If that makes me selfish then so be it.

CrystalE · 06/05/2021 19:23

I agree OP. Who wants another winter lockdown?

Aposterhasnoname · 06/05/2021 19:24

I’m going on at least one, two if possible, holidays abroad this year and I don’t give a gnats piss what judgey twats think. While you’ve been cowering behind your sofa I’ve been out working in one of the highest risk settings so the country doesn’t starve to death. There was no Covid secure workplaces last March, no pages of government guidelines, and masks and hand sanitiser were like rocking horse shit, but we worked our arses off, doing long hours to cover sick colleagues, making sure the food we produce got to the supermarkets so panic buying idiots could clear the shelves before we had time to shop for ourselves.

I deserve a break, and I’ll spend it doing exactly what I want thank you very much.

MoxFulder · 06/05/2021 19:26

I've got 2 booked. Both to green countries.

Can't wait. 🖕

cjpark · 06/05/2021 19:28

Why is it selfish? We've booked to go abroad in August. My DH and I work in the NHS and haven't had any time off together with the kids, longer than a weekend since Xmas 2019. We've had both vaccines, found somewhere where we dont need to quarantine with a very low covid rate. We've been working for the last 18 months in a hospital and following lock down rules to a tee. If we are allowed to travel - we will.

Shopliftersoftheworldunite · 06/05/2021 19:28

I mean to be fair, I’m a childless adult. I couldn’t give a fuck if your kids never go back to school. On a personal level it doesn’t affect me.

Can you see how people perhaps have different priorities, OP?

YABU.

Newmama29 · 06/05/2021 19:29

@Aposterhasnoname thank you for your hard work throughout this pandemic!! Flowers you deserve a holiday & people should stop being such virtue signalling, judgey arseholes & let others get on with it!!

Mrsdarwin · 06/05/2021 19:30

@BusyLizzie61 @Cocolemon I don’t see how a variant could be brought back though unless I’m missing something?

If people are doing PCR tests before they leave and on the way back / self isolating how is this any more risky than someone going to wales mixing outside their normal community and not doing any tests? Or am missing something in the guidance or have you seen something that contradicts this?
