What's happened to skinny jeans??? (light hearted)

31 year old here. I've just been told by a Gen Z girl that skinny jeans are now uncool. When I asked her what is seen as "cool", she replied with wide legged or mum/boyfriend jeans. Both look horrific on me - like a sack of potatoes! I've had a browse on ASOS and indeed, it showcases tall, lithe models donning high wasted, 90s style mum jeans with a turned up hem.

Please comfort me Mumsnet, and tell me that my 15 year staple is still acceptable?!

I can relate 😂. Also 31 and struggling with the 90s fashion. Black skinny jeans and a stripy top any day of the week! Have tried on a pair of mom jeans but they aren't for me as someone who is 5ft 3 and pear shaped

Selkiesarereal · 13/04/2021 20:19

Go to style and beauty as there is a big thread about jeans but yes apparently skinny jeans are out!

Mummy1608 · 13/04/2021 20:19

Flares are back in too. Personally I love them, it's like I'm wearing two skirts, swish swish

Kaleidoscopecascade · 13/04/2021 20:20

35 and love my skinny jeans and always will. Mum jeans make me look twice as big. Give me a side parting and skinny jeans any day of the week lol.

Nighthogs · 13/04/2021 20:20

@beepbopadooda I am 5ft 5 and apple shaped, and mum jeans do me absolutely no favours! Fashion trends come and go, but skinny jeans have defied all changing seasons for 15 years and I'm devastated they've finally been ditched.

I'm still going to wear them though.

High st shops still selling plenty of skinny ranges so I doubt they are FULLY out (in the way that bootcut was when skinny was in-in, for eg)

slooowdaysinlockdown · 13/04/2021 20:22

Maybe you need skinny flares

Undisclosedlocation · 13/04/2021 20:22

Thank god for that! Skinny jeans make my legs look like lumpy parsnips

Sleepisoverrated150 · 13/04/2021 20:23

Yes I have this issue too, that style doesn’t suit me at all, I like my skinny jeans. Maybe I can comprise for a flare of straight leg 🤣

Nighthogs · 13/04/2021 20:23

@Selkiesarereal Heading there now!

I can't believe wide legged jeans are back. I saw a couple of young girls in early 2000 style jeans with massive wide legs. I loved them at the time but wouldn't wear them now.

CateTown · 13/04/2021 20:24

I started wearing them so they immediately fell out of favour Grin

Peanutbutterandbananatoastie · 13/04/2021 20:25

The thing is skinny jeans are so practical. I remember going out in the rain in the early 00’s in my flares/bootcuts and getting soaking shins. Tbh I’m starting to think I might just wear dresses and skirts from now on.

Yep, this! I work at a university and spotted some bright young things wearing Madchester flares today. What comes around clearly goes around ... but I'm not going there!
Nighthogs · 13/04/2021 20:25

@Sleepisoverrated150 Yes...I think I can JUST about get away with straight, but nothing effortlessly high waisted with a crop top/tshirt tucked in which seems to be the fashion.

I remember the wife legged ones from early 2000. Anyone remember how dirty and ripped the bottom of them got? Shudder!

They can pry my skinny jeans and side parting from my cold, dead hands.

SunshineCake · 13/04/2021 20:26

Of course they are. Wear what you want.

MoiraNotRuby · 13/04/2021 20:27

I'm leaving the mom jeans to DD, and sticking with skinny jeans that suit me.

SheepPixie · 13/04/2021 20:27

Skinny jeans might be out but I’m not giving them up!
They suit my size and body shape, the plus outside of work my comfy wardrobe is skinnies tucked into stable/country boots and a hoodie.
It’s what I’m comfortable in so that’s what I’ll wear.

Ohpulltheotherone · 13/04/2021 20:27

Oh yeah massively out I’m afraid.

I do think it’s still acceptable to wear them as part of a dedicated style - so if your vibe is rock chic then leather skinnies and a band vest is always going to be a thing.

But the day of the distressed blue skinny / jegging has gone.

You might want to try a “skinny mom” jean. Plenty of styles on ASOS. It’s a mom jean shape but cut a lot closer to the body. I have a black pair and actually very flattering with both converse and heels.

gottenhaitch · 13/04/2021 20:28

I refuse to take fashion advice from kids who look like this.

You know what? I think I’ve got to the age where people can tell me that fashion has changed and I can say “How lovely! I’m going to carry on wearing these jeans and this Breton top anyway. But you crack on!”

Shops are still selling skinny jeans. I am still going to buy them.
