What's happened to skinny jeans??? (light hearted)

31 year old here. I've just been told by a Gen Z girl that skinny jeans are now uncool. When I asked her what is seen as "cool", she replied with wide legged or mum/boyfriend jeans. Both look horrific on me - like a sack of potatoes! I've had a browse on ASOS and indeed, it showcases tall, lithe models donning high wasted, 90s style mum jeans with a turned up hem.

Please comfort me Mumsnet, and tell me that my 15 year staple is still acceptable?!

Remember them in the 70s and 90s😀

Standrewsschool · 18/04/2021 13:54

I was a teen in the 80s. Flares were so uncool then.

MindatWork · 18/04/2021 13:56

Have just got back from a short weekend break in london and can report seeing approximately 5 women the entire weekend wearing skinny jeans (including me). Most in a selection of baggy mom jeans, wide leg (cut just above the ankle) or proper flares (mostly younger teens and pre-teens).

Have never felt so provincial. Experimented and bought a pair of baggier combat-style trousers from gap and have never been so comfy.

One of my fave memories from my teens was my younger sister tripping over her massive flares and flying arse over tit across the living roomGrin. Not sure I’m ready for early 2000s fashions to make a comeback though...

Am still laughing at pp who said skinnies made their legs look like parsnips Grin.

RampantIvy · 18/04/2021 15:29

I rather look my best in clothes that aren't super hot and trendy than look bad in unflattering trendy clothes.

Looking stylish is a far better look than being a fashion victim IMO.

EastWestWhosBest · 18/04/2021 15:32

@Mummy1608

Flares are back in too. Personally I love them, it's like I'm wearing two skirts, swish swish
They say if you wore it the first time round then you are too old to wear it the second time round.

This would be my third go at flares! I’ll check out thanks.

@The90swereadecadeago

I just popped into town and at least 10 teenage girls had flares on. Not straight leg, Mum jeans or boot cuts. Proper flares, light blue/acid wash floor length flares and I have to say, I don’t like them, they just look old fashioned to me!

I realised it’s because I wore boot cuts and flares as a teen and so I associate them with being out of date and old (and soaking up the rain and them flapping around my ankles) whereas teens will have grown up seeing skinnies and so see them as ‘old.’

I think that's why they like them, to the whippersnappers they are retro, and retro is always it's own brand of cool.

Haha yes. I guess we just have to wait for skinnies to move from passé to retro 😄

@SpeedRunParent

Have never cared what some bored style journo decides is fashionable. We are all different, a stylish person will know what suits them. Bollocks to 'trends'.
So what got you started on wearing skinnies? Once it was all bootcuts. Then skinnies came in and bootcuts looked all wrong. Why did you change to skinnies if not fir fashion?
TheMoth · 18/04/2021 16:02

I used to wear men's flares as a teen. Second hand, ideally. I remember all the measuring to get the size right. They worked because I had quite a boyish frame (but massive boobs). They never looked quite the same on me after I developed hips in my 20s. Skinnies look great on me, especially with a gillian Anderson shirt and post children, smaller boobs. My arse would look enormous in mum jeans.

Ohwhatbliss · 18/04/2021 16:33

I'm almost willing to give up my skinnies if someone tells me what I wear on my feet with boyfriend jeans in winter? Vejas won't cut it when it's wet and cold 🤷🏻‍♀️

doadeer · 18/04/2021 16:43

What are the shoe options with flares? I have a pair I really love they are so flattering but they look wrong with all my shoes

FourTurnings · 18/04/2021 17:31

ohwhatbliss chunky ankle boots.

RubyFowler · 18/04/2021 17:33

@ohwhatbliss I had the same issue. Google boyfriend jeans winter outfit and you'll get some ideas

I’m just not convinced you can do retro if you did it first time round.

TeddingtonTrashbag · 18/04/2021 17:58

I love skinnies. Couldn’t care less about fashion - just wear what i look thinnest in

TheMoth · 18/04/2021 20:22

I used to wear Adidas or doc martens with my flares.

When I was a bit more grown up and in work, I wore high heels and pointy toes, which used to get stuck and trip me up.

I do have a pair of flares from 2009, and I would wear them with a wooden, block heel and a blouse. I would be channelling 70s Emma lou Harris, rather than anything fashionable.

LadyWithLapdog · 18/04/2021 20:40

I’ve touched some girlfriend, mum whatever jeans today. No stretch! Stiff, horrible things

TheMoth · 18/04/2021 20:50

We were out and about today. I saw lots of women wearing mum jeans, the ankle grazing ones. I'm still not sold. And everyone looks the same: mum Jean, khaki shirt, white trainers.

TheMoth · 18/04/2021 20:51

And lack of stretch is why it's so difficult to find the right jeans that fit.
Remember when you were supposed to sit in the bath in your levis to get them to fit?

Chesneyhawkes1 · 18/04/2021 20:54

I'm not giving mine up. Only jeans that suit me!

Any kind of ankle boot. I’ve been wearing mine with the stretch ankle boots currently everywhere.
ChubbyLittleManInACampervan · 19/04/2021 12:25

Or lots of lace up boots/doc Martin’s/army boots around too (seen with loose fit rolled up jeans)

I think it looks cool

PeachyPeachTrees · 20/04/2021 18:08

I'm going to carry on wearing low waisted skinny jeans as they are the only shape that looks good on me.
My side parting is also staying!

Notworking123 · 20/04/2021 18:11

Why are those horrible unflattering jeans called mom jeans? Skinny jeans are mum jeans, all the sodding mums wear them. They can't steal our name for their denim and then call us old! I'd say their jeans look at least 30 years old.

Mom jeans are unflattering and are the ones I wore back in the 80s as a teenager and I only looked good in them then as I was skinny as a whippet!

I did buy a pair of Mom Jeans from Top Shop in their sale last year - a grey/black wash non stretch, frayed ankle hems, they're ok for a change but I've worn stretch jeans - whether they're skinny, non skinny, skinnier type with no stretch etc. I couldn't give a flying F now what's in fashion as long as they suit me!
