What's happened to skinny jeans??? (light hearted)

31 year old here. I've just been told by a Gen Z girl that skinny jeans are now uncool. When I asked her what is seen as "cool", she replied with wide legged or mum/boyfriend jeans. Both look horrific on me - like a sack of potatoes! I've had a browse on ASOS and indeed, it showcases tall, lithe models donning high wasted, 90s style mum jeans with a turned up hem.

Please comfort me Mumsnet, and tell me that my 15 year staple is still acceptable?!

I find it amazing that anyone would, or wouldn’t wear something depending on what is ‘in’.
Surely you can’t be that hard of thinking?

PurpleDaisies · 13/04/2021 22:56

Mom jeans look awful on me. I’m keeping my skinnies and straights.

In town today I was horrified by platform trainers being back again.

fluro · 13/04/2021 23:00

I’m not generally a slave to fashion but skinny jeans look soooo dated now. It’s not just the jeans - the whole silhouette has changed from a long lean look to a bulky bottom and a small, cropped or boxy top. I feel a bit old for mum jeans and a cropped top but I have high waisted flairs and culottes and I love them with my top tucked in. I liked skinnies too but this is a fun change.

fluro · 13/04/2021 23:01

Flares 😳

tenlittlecygnets · 13/04/2021 23:02

Yeah, skinny jeans are un-trendy now, but who cares? Wear what suits you!

Gobbeldegook · 13/04/2021 23:12

It's the 80s again. Didn't you see it coming?

RagzReturnsRebooted · 13/04/2021 23:12

I love wide legs and flares, bootcut etc but the fashion seems to have changed towards them being worn too short? Or it was last time I looked on Asos. Being tall anyway, I always struggled with jeans and now people seem to be doing ankle swingers on purpose. I can't cope with that (or cold ankles!).

Gobbeldegook · 13/04/2021 23:13

I'm still wearing leggings 🤣

TheOrigRights · 13/04/2021 23:17

Just today my Zara skinny flares arrived and I LOVE them. I had some Next skinny flares a while ago and they're still going, but the Zara ones are high waisted and are fit much better on my bum.

I have long legs and they make them look super long.
I'm not going to get Mum jeans though - at 50 years old I don't need all the bagginess around my middle.

Itsmeagainandagain · 13/04/2021 23:17

Our timberland or uggs boots don't go with wide legged jeans. When I think widelegged jeans on over 30s I'm thinking edina monsoon or abba tributes from butlins..

Pob13 · 13/04/2021 23:20

@gottenhaitch

They can pry my skinny jeans and side parting from my cold, dead hands.
Whats wrong with side partings?! I look horrific with a centre part with it just hanging over my face!
DoreenWinkings · 13/04/2021 23:21

It took me 10 years to accept skinny jeans. So of course they are now considered passe.

Guess I'll have to dig my flares out again, I bloody love flares. I've even stubbornly maintained at least one pair of Gazelles in my shoe pile since 1996.
have no fear, as soon as I put my flares on, all of the hip young things will rip theirs off in disgust and skinny jeans will once again rule supreme

Enidblyton1 · 13/04/2021 23:21

I totally rock the leg warmer over skinny jeans look. That’s me sorted then.
OwlinaTree · 13/04/2021 23:22

Well I'm delighted I can get my wide leg jeans out again! Hooray!!

babbaloushka · 13/04/2021 23:23

My DD loves her flares, an I must say, I got a comfy pair myself and they are very flattering! Feel like I am 17 again, just slightly fatter.

1Micem0use · 13/04/2021 23:23

The irony of mum jeans is that they are absolutely the worst jeans for me now I'm a new mum. I've got a muffin top I cant shift and mum jeans are the least flattering style I've ever tried

SpaceBatAngelDragon · 13/04/2021 23:24

Wear what you want to. Nobody needs to be a slave to fashion. Or save your skinnies, because they will be back in vogue in a couple of years. I have been watching various 70s and 80s programmes during lockdown, to amuse myself and have a bit of a childhood memory lane trip. The Charlie's Angels women look like they could have stepped out of Zara 19/20. Plaid shackets, tiered skirts, puff sleeve blouses, long blazers over wide leg trousers. It's all there. There is no new fashion anymore, just endless recycling of bygone styles.

Your skinny jeans will be back in the style pages eventually, but just because they aren't trendy, doesn't mean people will stop wearing them altogether. They are a too flattering and easy to wear style for most people to let them go completely.

Mumof1andacat · 13/04/2021 23:24

M and s use to do a slim boot cut which was a great fit. Skinny fit has never worked for me as I have slim waist and stomach but big thighs and calf so general had to size up to get my legs in but then end up with body of the Jean too big

HaveringWavering · 13/04/2021 23:24

I don’t even know what Mom/Mum jeans are!! Even though I am a Mum. But my 4 year old has no opinions on fashion.

PinkiOcelot · 13/04/2021 23:25

No!!!!!! I’m not giving up my skinnies! Boyfriend or mum jeans would do me no favours. At all!!

ArtemisiaGentle · 13/04/2021 23:26

I love skinny jeans but DD14 has informed me I am not cool. Before skinnies I lived in boot cut. I've bought 2 pairs of Mom jeans recently and whilst I no longer worry about bending over and revealing the top of my arse, I feel..boxy.

DD wears dungas boyfriend jeans and weird oversized jumpers. She looks like she's drowning.

JaniceBattersby · 13/04/2021 23:29

I’ve already done flared jeans once (for the whole of the late 90s in fact). I’m not doing them again.

I’m sure they’re absolutely fantastic for a little slip of a thing that’s never given birth and spends her days deciding between Skinny Mocha Choca or Vegan Chai Latte. But if you have three kids that like mud and you have to go out in the rain more than occasionally, flared jeans just soak up the rain and shit, creating an unintentional balayage effect. No ta.

Infradoug · 13/04/2021 23:32

So how does this equate to Boden? Those jeans all still look pretty skinny to me?? panicking

Mine are the same! Huge trousers and massive jumpers, or a massive jumper tucked up into her bra with a skirt so short her arse hangs half out! I do like the dungarees though, one of mine has been wearing them for years and was really chuffed when they came '"in" again.
thenameshastings · 13/04/2021 23:35

I don’t think they’re totally out, ‘mom jeans’ are everywhere but most high street shops still have a good supply of skinny jeans in and I still see them on style and outfit inspiration Instagram posts, especially cropped/ankle grazing ones.

I like that there’s loads of choice for jeans now- skinny, slim, straight, mom/boyfriend, bootcut, flares all in the same shop! A couple of years ago it would just be skinnies.
