What's happened to skinny jeans??? (light hearted)

Nighthogs · 13/04/2021 20:14

31 year old here. I've just been told by a Gen Z girl that skinny jeans are now uncool. When I asked her what is seen as "cool", she replied with wide legged or mum/boyfriend jeans. Both look horrific on me - like a sack of potatoes! I've had a browse on ASOS and indeed, it showcases tall, lithe models donning high wasted, 90s style mum jeans with a turned up hem.

Please comfort me Mumsnet, and tell me that my 15 year staple is still acceptable?!

Who says they're 'out'? Who gets to decide that 🤷‍♀️

Everyone is still wearing them, so clearly not out.

Nighthogs · 13/04/2021 20:32

@gottenhaitch What's wrong with a side parting? Good lord, what have I missed?!

34 yo and I feel I will be wearing skinny jeans until BoJo makes a law against it (maybe not even then!) my bum needs the structure of the skinny and also as a pear shape I need no extra fabric in the hip department tyvm. Skinnies are basically after oxygen and caffeine in the list of what I need to survive. I cannot, and will not, be dragged back to the bad old days of a light stone washed, baggy arsed mom-jean last seen on my primary school teachers circa 1996. Amazing on teens now, but sadly that ship has sailed for me.

Peanutbutterandbananatoastie · 13/04/2021 20:34

@Nighthogs

I remember the wife legged ones from early 2000. Anyone remember how dirty and ripped the bottom of them got? Shudder!
Exactly I remember tripping up on the frayed trailing bits too. My mum asked me if I needed them taking up and I rolled my eyes at her Grin
2bunny · 13/04/2021 20:34

@gottenhaitch I'm with you I'll fight to the death for my skinny jeans and side parting even tho my teen dd say I look old I'm 32 😳

JeanClaudeVanDammit · 13/04/2021 20:34

I can’t get on board with 90s fashion being fashionable again. I just can’t.

They can pry my skinny jeans and side parting from my cold, dead hands

Also this.

It's all about the centre parting now, apparently.

Sciurus83 · 13/04/2021 20:34

The unfortunate truth is that they are OUT! But, as an avid 90s metaller in my teens I just don't want to dress how I did at 17 now I'm 20 years older! I like my hush boyfriend jeans as an in the middle, and a wide leg trouser that's not a jean. Can't see skinnier totally retiring though, it took me years to prize into skinnier for wide legs and flares, I don't want to have to go back again!

Nighthogs · 13/04/2021 20:34

*Oh yeah massively out I’m afraid.

I do think it’s still acceptable to wear them as part of a dedicated style - so if your vibe is rock chic then leather skinnies and a band vest is always going to be a thing.

But the day of the distressed blue skinny / jegging has gone.

You might want to try a “skinny mom” jean. Plenty of styles on ASOS. It’s a mom jean shape but cut a lot closer to the body. I have a black pair and actually very flattering with both converse and heels.*

I am rather intrigued to look, but will feel like I'm cheating on my beloved FatFace skinnies!

Try a slim or straight cut leg. Honestly love the look of skinny jeans but I bought two pairs of slim leg jeans and made me realise how uncomfortable skinnies are!

CommanderBurnham · 13/04/2021 20:37

Basically a lot of people can't get into their skinny jeans after a year of eating their money. Me included.

TweeterandtheMonkeyman · 13/04/2021 20:37

I remember hating the look of skinny jeans when they first came in ! Was very reluctant to say farewell to my flares & bootcuts 😂
I’ve just bought some high waisted relaxed slim fit which I must say look a bit more on trend than skinnies .
I’ve just bought DD some wide leg jeans from H&M - to be worn with t-shirt tucked in, natch ... makes me chuckle , she looks so retro!

Gobshite2000 · 13/04/2021 20:38

I'm 43 and I'm sorry kids but the skinny jeans are staying with me. Occasionally wear straight leg but even they are quite tight. I don't like baggy trousers

Littlepickle21 · 13/04/2021 20:38

Also clinging on to my side parting (AND a sweeping fringe...) I know the centre parting is the thing now but I.just.can't. Im just going to wait here til 2010 has its day in fashion again, and when it does, I will be ready.

SpeedRunParent · 13/04/2021 20:39

Have never cared what some bored style journo decides is fashionable. We are all different, a stylish person will know what suits them. Bollocks to 'trends'.

Cocomarine · 13/04/2021 20:39

I love listening to my Gen Z daughter (proudly, tribally Gen Z) tell me how bad skinny jeans are. She’s so funny about - she’s not rude to me, it’s all teasing.

In fact, she makes an exception for Gen X - “thing is mum, you can, because nobody cares what Gen X wears or tbh even notices a Gen X. The skinnies are under your generational cloak of invisibility. Like, there’s a Gen X? Between Boomers and Millennials? Who knew?”

If you’re a Millennial wearing them though... in her head, she’s roasting you. You and your Harry Potter house hoodie 🤣

Nighthogs · 13/04/2021 20:39

I can honestly say I am absolutely bewildered that a hair parting is a trend

But how do you wear boots with mom jeans? Please dont tell me they are out too Sad

aibutohavethisusername · 13/04/2021 20:42

44 and I’m still wearing bootcut jeans 🤣🤣🤣

AtlasLand · 13/04/2021 20:42

Sorry OP but skinny jeans went out about 5 years ago in favour of Mum jeans, and now wide leg / straight.

To be fair proper sturdy denim is way more flattering and structured than stretch. And post-lockdown fashion is not in favour of skin tight anything - thank god. I love old school denim.

BluePheasant · 13/04/2021 20:43

This 90s fashion revival thing is bizarre. It was awful then and it's awful now! When I see old photos of myself I think how lucky teens are these days to have so many lovely choices of clothes to wear...why would they want to do this to themselves?! Confused

I recently tried on a couple of different styles of jeans but nope, I'm just not tall enough to pull it off and they don't go with boots. Skinny jeans go with everything! I can put up with looking uncool to kids who are half my age Wink

Nighthogs · 13/04/2021 20:43

@AtlasLand Five whole years ago?!

I'm way more uncool than I thought.

I disagree slightly. I think that things that awful, can become less awful with familiarity.

I hated skinny jeans for years - thought they looked awful on almost anyone, and certainly me.

Once I was accustomed to them (5 years late to the party 😉) I actually really liked them - on me, and lots of other people.

I find the same with ENORMOUS eyebrows. I’m still not a fan, but eyebrows that had me 😳 trying not to stare in the street ☺️ totally pass me by now! Familiarity.

I like skinnies, but I’m also liking their close relative, slim fit. It’s actually really nice not to have the denim touching all parts of me.

Bottom line though: definitely wear whatever you like!

waitingforsun · 13/04/2021 20:44

I own both skinnies and mom jeans! 🤣 I'm 32.

Prefer the mom jeans in summer turned up with Birkenstock's and a tucked in t-shirt, prefer skinnies in winter with baggy jumpers and doc martens! 🤷🏼‍♀️

EugeniaGrace · 13/04/2021 20:45

I am rocking army green utility trousers, now.

They felt very familiar to me, like an old friend I’d forgotten about.

Last worn: 1996
