What's happened to skinny jeans??? (light hearted)

31 year old here. I've just been told by a Gen Z girl that skinny jeans are now uncool. When I asked her what is seen as "cool", she replied with wide legged or mum/boyfriend jeans. Both look horrific on me - like a sack of potatoes! I've had a browse on ASOS and indeed, it showcases tall, lithe models donning high wasted, 90s style mum jeans with a turned up hem.

Please comfort me Mumsnet, and tell me that my 15 year staple is still acceptable?!

And yes to hating skinny jeans when they first came in! Haha! I used to think I'd never be seen dead in them! Oh how things change Grin

ChubbyLittleManInACampervan · 13/04/2021 20:47

“ Have never cared what some bored style journo decides is fashionable. We are all different, a stylish person will know what suits them. Bollocks to 'trends'.” .... said Linda, who has never stopped wearing blue eye shadow up to her eye brows and has a monthly perm to keep her hair nice abd bouffant GrinWink

We ALL have a point where we decide to no longer follow stupid fashion, and you can see when people decide this . Often around 40/50. So you still see boomers with the blue eye shadow and frosty lipstick, and now us lot will cling tooth and nail to the fashion of early noughties

Skinnies be gone!

ChubbyLittleManInACampervan · 13/04/2021 20:48

@BluePheasant there were many threads 10-15 years ago about how hideous they were and how they gave you “parsnip legs” Grin

elsaesmeralda · 13/04/2021 20:49

Mom jeans are comfy though especially with converse! I haven't worn skinny jeans in a while but won't get rid, never

SmokedDuck · 13/04/2021 20:49

I'm glad to see the end of the skinny jean, for a while it was difficult to find other fits. And really, they were getting kind of old.

I think the thing is not to just think about the jean or pants, but the whole silhouette. When skinny jeans and leggings first came in they were worn with a larger/longer top. It worked, it was a nice line.

But the boxy shorter shirts and sweatshirts at the moment, or the soft blouses, typically look crappy with the skinny jean. Stupid and proportionally wrong if you aren't a 14 year old stick.

whatswithtodaytoday · 13/04/2021 20:49

I'm just waiting for kick flares to come back in - skinny in the thigh, like sails from the knee. They suit me best of all jeans and I wore out my old ones many years ago now.

I saw some young girls in low slung wide leg jeans the other day, and laughed out loud - they looked liked they'd been dropped into the street from 1999 😁 I love it but I'm not sure I can go back there!

Jbh333 · 13/04/2021 20:50

I just ordered some “mum” jeans and tried them on today. Hahahahahahahahahha is all I can say. My massive stomach did not look good in it so back to elasticated waists found only with skinny jeans. 😊

Nighthogs · 13/04/2021 20:50

Skinny jeans and baggy jumper = the perfect balance.

Baggy jeans and baggy jumper = disproportionate!

On me at least...

I recall a similar discussion when skinnies first arrived on the scene. Everyone saying ‘I love my boot cuts and won’t be giving them up’.....errr yes you will 😂

Cactus1982 · 13/04/2021 20:53

About bloody time! They’re awful and so uncomfortable. I think I’ve only ever had one pair and they practically cut off the circulation in my legs. I tended to prefer straight cut, though I’ve been wearing mom and boyfriend jeans over the last few years.

ohnana · 13/04/2021 20:53

Skinny jeans have been “out” of style for years! Not a recent thing.

Gen z are between 6-24 years old... so mostly children. Just wear what you like and don’t feel you have to dress like a child / teenager 😬 That’s the way I look at it! 🤷🏽‍♀️ (Though I am 30 and I’m all for mom, boyfriend and straight leg jeans. Don’t even own skinny jeans, but just prefer the other styles!)

BluePheasant · 13/04/2021 20:55

@ChubbyLittleManInACampervan oh I can just imagine! And I bet nearly everyone from those threads now owns several pairs.

I've just realised I have actually made a recent lockdown purchase of slim fit jeans and I must say they are very comfy but they still don't look right with boots and so far haven't made it outside the house as it's been too cold for spring/summer footwear. They might become a staple if they look ok with flipflops! The boot cut and mom jeans looked horrendous on me. Never again!

You’re in luck! Kick flares are back in 😬 can get them on ASOS etc and I see plenty of people (gen z) wearing them at the moment. It’s basically anything but skinny jeans..

The dreaded soaking wet ends of flares though...

ChubbyLittleManInACampervan · 13/04/2021 22:35

To those saying they can’t wear loose fit as it makes their bum look big... big bums are IN

small tiny 90s bums are OUT Grin

@gottenhaitch

They can pry my skinny jeans and side parting from my cold, dead hands.
This 👏
Treaclepie19 · 13/04/2021 22:42

It is making me laugh a bit. Thinking back to how in the early 2000s I was a teen in the widest legged jeans I could find. Then transitioned into the skinniest of skinny jeans and never looked back.

Slim jeans and boots, you need to roll them up so they sit above the boot is the trick.
I googled mum jeans and boots as I was also struggling to transition to winter!

SaturdayRocks · 13/04/2021 22:45

I am glad skinny jeans are finally over. Not so much glad that they’re ‘over’, but that it’s actually possible to buy other styles in shops. For a good decade, it was impossible!

But if you like them, and they suit you (they don’t suit everyone), you should absolutely continue to wear them.

I have been aware of the middle-aged connotations of both skinny jeans and middle partings for some time now, but won’t be changing my parting any time soon.

I am delighted wide leg trews are back - I suit the fitted upper half / wider lower half silhouette so much better.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/04/2021 22:46

I can’t wear Mom jeans because I have a fat stomach, so that’s that. I can’t be wearing jeans where the waist is right up in the middle of the fatness! (I have PCOS so go in for male rather than female pattern weight gain - I could of course lose weight though!)

Anyway I wouldn’t wear the same jeans as my dd.

I’ve been wear straight leg jeans a lot anyway, but I’ve just got a skinny ish pair that I really like and I’m going to wear because I want to!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/04/2021 22:47

I wouldn’t mind if we went back to 90s bootcut though. They seem to constantly say this is going to come back but it never does!

SaturdayRocks · 13/04/2021 22:48

Sorry - side-partings!

changi · 13/04/2021 22:50

You might want to try a “skinny mom” jean.

Do they do a "fat mom" Jean?

littlebillie · 13/04/2021 22:52

Bootcut Smile

Ellpellwood · 13/04/2021 22:53

I miss my Topshop Mooch jeans c.2003 (wide leg, boyfriend fit, slightly flared) sometimes, but otherwise at 36 I shall be sticking to skinnies with longer tops and chunky ankle boots. I can just about feel ok in a rolled straight leg with trainers.

I just don't know what shoes I'd wear with flares. I don't feel I can go back to Spice Girls platform Buffalos or heeled ankle boots underneath.
