What's happened to skinny jeans??? (light hearted)

31 year old here. I've just been told by a Gen Z girl that skinny jeans are now uncool. When I asked her what is seen as "cool", she replied with wide legged or mum/boyfriend jeans. Both look horrific on me - like a sack of potatoes! I've had a browse on ASOS and indeed, it showcases tall, lithe models donning high wasted, 90s style mum jeans with a turned up hem.

Please comfort me Mumsnet, and tell me that my 15 year staple is still acceptable?!

@Mumsnut

Pyong- you’re twinned with my 14 year old then , though she had to cover her pink hair with a boring brown box dye once schools Went back
But this has been my "look" for a good 30 odd years, as a proper rock chick, which I think is what pisses my DD's off especially as they wanted to wear this look but couldnt as, to them, it is mum boots and a perm :o

a post kids bum does not have that pert and peachy look that a 19 year old will have.
Nonsense

They just look so ... heavy.

I came very late to skinnies and still only ever had one pair because I wear them so rarely. But, c’mon, flares would look ridiculous on me.

My DD wears flares and they look great on her. She’s 5’8”. She also wears these baggy, old-men’s golfing jumpers and 90s footballers jackets. She’s so young and beautiful, she really can get away with anything.

PandemicAtTheDisco · 14/04/2021 00:41

I saw a grey-haired wrinkly old man in his skinny jeans earlier this week. They were slipping low over his bum. Since then I've lost all desire to wear them again.

@PyongyangKipperbang

Its not just about size. Ime a post kids bum does not have that pert and peachy look that a 19 year old will have. Especially if you have lost any significant amount of weight.

Having lost 6 stone about 3 years ago, I think I need a bum bra!

Nice loose-ish cotton flares + pilates has worked wonders for me. You can get nice fitted underclothes designed to hoik the bum up a bit and make it more shapely, I found that helped a lot and bought my saggy belly into balance a bit, it looked way less prominent IYSWIM.

Oh god the big racer jacket! Mine has one and it is HUGE. I love her, and ditto is she gorgeous and stylish, but it makes her look like a poorly dressed toddler! She loves it and I haven't the heart to tell her. Will no doubt be sold on Depop or the likes in a year.
FizzyTarte · 14/04/2021 00:48

I’ve never stopped wearing wide leg jeans since the 90s and it sucks when things come back into fashion because then you just look like you’re trying to be trendy! So I need an alternative! Might start wearing skinnies in a sartorially ironic way if anyone’s getting rid 😆

ButterfliesandMoths · 14/04/2021 00:50

50 and still wearing my boot cuts. Love them ❤️

Why on earth does anyone care about what's cool? I still love my tanga knickers and they're really hard to find. Some of mine are 20 years old! From when M&S stuff lasted :)

I refuse to take fashion advice from kids who look like this
80s French textbook - so true and bloody hideous

LadyWithLapdog · 14/04/2021 00:55

@babbaloushka yes, huge jackets. Really unflattering colours too. Mustard? Brown epaulettes? Sloping shoulders. Eurgh. With a tiny crop-top underneath. I can’t even say take that ugly jacket off as she’s barely dressed under.

JaneJeffer · 14/04/2021 00:57

I don't think my skinnies will fit now that I've put on a stone over lockdown. I've taken to wearing trousers instead. Much comfier.

mooonstone · 14/04/2021 00:59

It’s acceptable but doesn’t mean it’s fashionable

At 31 you’re old enough to know fashion trends come and go. As someone that’s gen z, it’s hilarious seeing millennials process that they’re uncool

LittleDoritt · 14/04/2021 01:06

I loved the nineties so much. If I had known it was going to come back with a vengeance I wouldn't have gotten so fat over the last twenty years. Grin

Oh the irony of a zoomer posting on MN calling anyone uncool.

31 is almost slap bang in the middle of the millennials (born roughly 1980-1996). We don’t care what the tide pod gen thinks of us.

Oi. Don’t disrespect your millennial elders!

Love, Generation X
(still in skinnies and got knickers older than you)

everythingbackbutyou · 14/04/2021 01:39

@PyongyangKipperbang, let's hang out. One of the proudest moments of my life was when my daughter asked for DMs for Christmas last year. I haven't really strayed too far clothing-wise in 30 years either - it's what I like. I start muttering darkly when I go into Urban Outfitters with my daughter - "I hope they know these flowery dresses and band t shirts aren't an ORIGINAL look" etc etc. I feel like I have time travelled to the late eighties when we go there.

DarkMutterings · 14/04/2021 01:47

My DD is going to an 80s party
How old am I that my youth is now a party theme Grin

Having said that I do think people need to stop being obsessed with only one specific Jean style. In the summer with espadrilles and a hippy top I wear a long boot cut, in winter with a huge jumper and boots I wear skinnies, very casual I prefer boyfriend and sneakers. But as established at the top I'm so old I'm of an age i can wear what I like Grin

CherryJane · 14/04/2021 01:50

I had mum jeans in the 90s although they weren't called that then.
We were looking back at old photos during first lockdown and everyone in the house agreed I looked like a sack of shit on them, and the wide legged jeans and the boot cut.

I'm 5ft tall so anything wide just does not work at all.

I'll be sticking to my skinny and slim legs for a while yet. I'd rather sitch jeans altogether than look like a barrelled midget again. I'm almost 50 so hardly the a hot young trend setter anyway.

BootsScootsAndToots · 14/04/2021 01:56

I'm sticking with black skinnies for going out as I think they look good with a big flowy top. I'm wearing a top with shoulder pads and black skinnies this weekend for our girls night out.

Slim turn ups for day to day, which suit me in flats or trainers.

As a mum, I get the irony of wearing 'mum jeans' that are so-called because they're unflattering and meant as a derogatory description for someone who doesn't care/get fashion.

So let the young waifs wear them and rock them. Most middle age women can't rock that look 🤷

Cameleongirl · 14/04/2021 01:59

I'm in the US and read an article in the Lifestyle section of a major newspaper last weekend..."Clothing That Dates You."

Guess what was on the list...my beloved skinny jeans.Grin We should all be wearing denim joggers (WTF is that?), a straight or wide leg, or even a flare, apparently.

Worse still, I shouldn't be wearing my long cardigans either! I can live with that, I suppose.

I confess I wore a pair of straight-legged jeans today, I just couldn't look at my favorite skinny ones in the same way.

StayingHere · 14/04/2021 02:09

Nooo I didn't know they'd gone out of fashion. I'm keeping mine - happy to accept that in my mid-30s I'm probably not going to be cool anyway. I look fat in all other types!
