What's happened to skinny jeans??? (light hearted)

31 year old here. I've just been told by a Gen Z girl that skinny jeans are now uncool. When I asked her what is seen as "cool", she replied with wide legged or mum/boyfriend jeans. Both look horrific on me - like a sack of potatoes! I've had a browse on ASOS and indeed, it showcases tall, lithe models donning high wasted, 90s style mum jeans with a turned up hem.

Please comfort me Mumsnet, and tell me that my 15 year staple is still acceptable?!

I've always loved my 80's / 90's fashion so am very glad that wide jeans are back. I have both skinny and wide but always felt more comfy in wide.

balloonsandboobies · 13/04/2021 23:37

@Infradoug

So how does this equate to Boden? Those jeans all still look pretty skinny to me?? panicking
Boden isn't really the height of cool though, is it? Grin
dottiedaisee · 13/04/2021 23:38

Well MS jeggings for me ! Comfortable and easy to where..lots of colour choices as well.

theuncles · 13/04/2021 23:38

I've never liked skinny jeans - unless you are really tall and slender they do you no favours at all. Plus you can't get them off unless you pull them inside out! I always wonder why people wear them as it makes their legs look like weird triangles pointing downwards.....Confused

But each to their own.......Grin

I have been given some and also even bought some in the Gap sale - but strictly for wearing with long boots! I am reasonably slim but 5 ft 3 so not tall - they just aren't flattering! Give me Gap straight leg (and high waist.....Smile) any day!

Siepie · 13/04/2021 23:40

They definitely seem to be out of style among 16 year olds, but among people my age (30s) we're all still wearing them.

It's not as drastic as when skinnies became the thing and all other jeans disappeared from the racks.

FinallyFluid · 13/04/2021 23:40

@gottenhaitch

They can pry my skinny jeans and side parting from my cold, dead hands.
@gottenhaitch

I totally agree with you, I am 5'3 about 8 stone 7 and anything else looks ridiculous on me and I mean ridiculous.

BrianWankum · 13/04/2021 23:44

@Ohpulltheotherone

Oh yeah massively out I’m afraid.

I do think it’s still acceptable to wear them as part of a dedicated style - so if your vibe is rock chic then leather skinnies and a band vest is always going to be a thing.

But the day of the distressed blue skinny / jegging has gone.

You might want to try a “skinny mom” jean. Plenty of styles on ASOS. It’s a mom jean shape but cut a lot closer to the body. I have a black pair and actually very flattering with both converse and heels.

Ok, so I went to ASOS and searched “skinny mom jeans” (because I make all my best clothing purchases in the middle of the night ...) - how on earth are these not just skinny jeans???
amusedbush · 13/04/2021 23:46

I'm almost 31 and I did the wide legged jeans thing in the early to mid 00s. The ripped hems dragging along the ground, soaking rain up to my knees... no thank you. Plus I look horrific with a centre parting, especially since lockdown boredom eating has given me a face the size of the moon.

Quite frankly, I refused to be called uncool by a generation worshiping at the alter of crocs Grin

I also won't be giving up my cry-laugh emoji any time soon!

Yapplepearora · 13/04/2021 23:48

Teen fashion has done an incredible U-turn.

My 18 year old used to be the skinny jean, crop top, block eyebrow and precise straight hair type when that was in. Now, she wouldn’t be seen dead in any of those things and dresses like I did in the 80s! It’s definitely the mainstream fashion now. I just know the clothes she wears now she would have gagged at the thought of when she was 15.

SmokedDuck · 13/04/2021 23:50

@RagzReturnsRebooted

I love wide legs and flares, bootcut etc but the fashion seems to have changed towards them being worn too short? Or it was last time I looked on Asos. Being tall anyway, I always struggled with jeans and now people seem to be doing ankle swingers on purpose. I can't cope with that (or cold ankles!).
As a short legged person I love this, I don't have to hem!

However, I noticed in Zara the other day a lot of quite long ones, so I think they are around now too.

TidyOmlette · 13/04/2021 23:52

I refuse to give up my skinny jeans because a generation who had to be told not to eat washing pods said so.

Fashion changes constantly, Jesus remember the 80’s styles?! How we looked on them with horror. Wear what makes you happy and comfortable, the joy of being in our 30’s is that we don’t have to care anymore

SmokedDuck · 13/04/2021 23:54

The only thing I can think is they have the high waist. So they are really just the high waisted skinny jean that's been around a few years now.

LemonSwan · 13/04/2021 23:56

I dont mind the idea of the shape but in jeans it just doesnt work. There is not enough give and flexibility to suit a range of shapes and finding the right fit is near impossible.

We have people running around with flattened bottoms or an airbag crotch. It is super unflattering!

I have given up a moved to chinos

I love my ankle grazers (skinny, of course!). I find them so much more flattering than longer legs, which bunch up at the top of your shoe.

Ankle grazers have been around for a few years and as someone with a 28" inside leg, I'm grateful Grin

JanuaryJonez · 14/04/2021 00:01

M&S is your friend. They have every single style going (and really well made too). All clearly signposted.

The changing rooms are off limits but me and my teen DD went into one of their disabled toilets and tried on loads of styles.

You really do have to be reasonably tall and very slim for flared jeans to look good. My 14yo looked great in them but it added a dress size to me and I looked very dumpy.

A lot of Instagrammers I follow look amazing in them, but they are of course all about a size 6!

I remember back in the 70s loads of my friends' mums wore them and looked great, but maybe they all had great figures.

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 14/04/2021 00:05

Was pissed off recently when I found non stretch wide leg jeans online and thought my prayers had been answered (when stretch denim first came out I fucking hated it! I wanted the denim to hold me in not stretch out when I sat down). So I bought them and the bastard things don't suit me! Then I got a bootcut jean, doesn't suit me either. 5"2 with small waist but big hips and thighs + online jeans shopping = a world of crap Grin

The only pair of jeans I own are 2 year old skinny jeans from Primark that were comfortable when I bought them, lockdown has definitely put paid to that, I had to wrench them on the other day Sad

IvysPoison · 14/04/2021 00:06

I recently saw a brown furry shorts and crop top ensemble advertised on social media and loads of 15-25 year olds were gushing over it and emoji heart-eyeing it. So quite honestly, I don't trust their fashion sense at all 🤣

You wear your skinny jeans with pride, OP (as will I)!

Providora · 14/04/2021 00:08

I'm in the Southern hemisphere, looser rolled up mum/boyfriend jeans looked OK over summer with bare ankles and a lightweight top.

Heading into cooler weather though, they just add too much bulk when paired with thick jumpers, boots and a coat. I'm pear shaped and need to follow the 'fitted top/loose bottom or vice versa' principle or I just look huge all over.

My blue skinnies are feeling a bit weird and dated though - I've shelved those for now and kept black and grey out for winter.

PyongyangKipperbang · 14/04/2021 00:14

I am a deep embarrassment to my kids because I have......

A bright pink punk style undercut (with added spiky bits)
Pleather and denim skinnies
Band T Shirts from bands that recorded the originals of "new" songs that they have raved about and then dismissed when I played the originals
Docs

All of this horror at the age of 48 :o

BruceyBaby · 14/04/2021 00:17

Ditto! Smile
ApplyWithin · 14/04/2021 00:21

To those saying they can’t wear loose fit as it makes their bum look big... big bums are IN small tiny 90s bums are OUT

But given the choice? We ALL know which one we really want.

LadyWithLapdog · 14/04/2021 00:28

Oh God so we’re back to this.

What's happened to skinny jeans??? (light hearted)
Mumsnut · 14/04/2021 00:29

Pyong- you’re twinned with my 14 year old then , though she had to cover her pink hair with a boring brown box dye once schools
Went back

PyongyangKipperbang · 14/04/2021 00:29

Its not just about size. Ime a post kids bum does not have that pert and peachy look that a 19 year old will have. Especially if you have lost any significant amount of weight.

Having lost 6 stone about 3 years ago, I think I need a bum bra!

AndeanMountainCat · 14/04/2021 00:30

15 years? I’ve been wearing skinny jeans since about 1989. Can’t get the damn things off.
