I've gone to M & S and Sainsbury's this afternoon, and there are no Easter eggs left . Literally none at all. Why??

@Benjispruce2

I am aware of that but it’s not ok to trash religious beliefs regardless of their origin.
Yes it is. Freedom of speech. It’s not OK to use religious hate speech. It is fine to say that believing in Easter is like believing in zombies. You know that evangelism (which is legal) is all about telling people that their religion is wrong and yours is right? The God Delusion talked about the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Richard Dawkins has not been arrested.
Benjispruce2 · 04/04/2021 09:09

It’s disrespectful. In the same way it’s disrespectful to mock people for their race or gender.

BigPyjamas · 04/04/2021 09:10

Universal rule: buy high demand, limited stock items early.

Much like buying cranberry sauce before Xmas eve, or not waiting for the hottest day of the year to buy a parasol.

You snooze you lose.

Benjispruce2 · 04/04/2021 09:10

It’s ok to say you don’t believe, not ok to mock. I have no religion but each to their own.

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 04/04/2021 09:11

EvilOnion Is a woman after my own heart.
Luckily I managed to find some heavily discounted Peter Rabbit table wear so my kids have an "Easter Bunny" cup and bowl filled with random treats: flumps, bubble wand, rainbow drops, freddos, kinder surprise. They seem happy enough with it!

CricketClub · 04/04/2021 09:11

@Onedropbeat

It’s a celebration that predates Christianity anyway

They just adopted the spring calendar festival of Ostara

The eggs symbolising new beginnings and regrowth

Yeh and Christmas evolved from pagan traditions celebrating the winter solstice.

Many Christian traditions originated from paganism. It doesn’t matter. There are many Christians who believe what they believe and we should respect them in the same way we respect Jewish, Hindu, Muslim etc. people and their beliefs. (ie don’t call Easter ‘Zombie Jesus day’).

Mocking a religion in general is absolutely fine on an anonymous forum, that is not the same as mocking a religious PERSON.
HaveringWavering · 04/04/2021 09:14

You realise that it is people being afraid to call out the absurdity of religions that keeps so many toxic oppressive religious cultures going?

CricketClub · 04/04/2021 09:18

It really isn’t. And yes, you mock the person if you mock their religion.

Yes, it really is. You completely misunderstand the fundamental importance of free speech in society.

Because yet another mindless gift-giving chore where I have to worry about which ones to give, getting the right chocolate, it being not too cheap so I over spend to compensate, making sure people have equal value eggs lest they think I like one adult less than another blah bah blah.

Why on earth all the angst though? Surely if you were buying then you'd just get a selection medium sized eggs and distribute - job done! A chocolate egg is a chocolate egg and if they don't like the bar or sweet that comes with it then in sure they won't hold it against you.

Add salad, burgers, ice lollies, bread rolls to that list on a hot day!

@BlackCatShadow

Just wanted to wish you all a Happy Easter!

It's been a tough year for everyone.

A very happy Easter to you too.💐🐇🙂

You completely misunderstand how integral a person’s religion is to their life.

Happy Easter BlackCatShadow !

Absolutely, if people want to believe absolute rubbish that's their choice but I can also call it zombie Jesus day if I want.

If you are offended well be offended it doesn't hurt you.

Hardbackwriter · 04/04/2021 09:32

As a Christian I'm not offended by you calling it zombie Jesus day but I do think it makes you sound like a teenager who thinks they're much cleverer than they are.

Benjispruce2 · 04/04/2021 09:34

I agree. I like fairness. Let’s hear you mock all other religions and see how quickly MN reacts.

dividedwefall · 04/04/2021 09:35

It is disrespectful to call it Zombie Jesus Day, whether you believe or not.

I bet you wouldn't say something similar to a Muslim.

This.
BadMudda · 04/04/2021 09:39

This thread would have taken a very different turn had it have been about any religion other than Christianity.

Love Mumsnet but at times like this I loathe it.

Cocogreen · 04/04/2021 09:42

@CricketClub
I'm don't know if they compare!
I bought Plaistowe for a fancy recipe and son ate the bit left and became a big fan.Smile

Againstmachine · 04/04/2021 09:42

I don't personally call it that, the point is I should be able to if I want.

As for being disrespectful, it's funny how to the majority of religions this tolerance only goes one way. They can be massively intolerant, but then you say something and they are offended.

ThanksItHasPockets · 04/04/2021 09:43

The ‘zombie Jesus’ people are also those who think it the height of wit to refer to God as a ‘Sky fairy’. It is best to pay them no mind.
