Because they reduced production after last year when the shops were left with millions unsold due to the lockdowns and they had to give away trolley loads! They're produced months in advance and they wouldn't have known what restrictions/lockdown etc would be in place at Easter. They couldn't risk wasting/losing so much money a second time.

Wait for the threads complaining about too many Easter Eggs even though there was a huge national shortage not 24 hours ago. Grin
midnightstar66 · 04/04/2021 07:59

I've noticed this for the last couple of years now including Easter 2019 so I don't think it's to do with lockdown. It's also been the case with advent calendars so I suspect shops are being pressured to cut down on excess seasonal stock that they have to sell off reduced

CeeJay81 · 04/04/2021 08:13

I live semi rural without a car but I managed. Added some to my Tesco delivery when they were on offer a few weeks back. Work in a large coop, they still had a small selection of eggs left yesterday too.

singleagain22 · 04/04/2021 08:15

Because there's not much going on I think people are going wild on special occasions.

Selection boxes were no where to be found at Xmas.

Everyone's just sitting home eating chocolate 🤣

itsgettingwierd · 04/04/2021 08:15

Must be regional - shelves and shelves in my town. Managed to get some yesterday!

However the range is limited. Mainly Maltesers, creme egg and smarties eggs in most places Confused

This is so so true!!
Cocogreen · 04/04/2021 08:17

I've always bought them 2 weeks before because I can't bear going to the shops in Easter week and avoid it. Hide them in the linen cupboard under the pillowcases.
Adult son prefers Plaistowe milk cooking chocolate so he gets a block of that.

Is that a posh version of Scotbloc (Milk Chocolate flavour) ?
Flowers24 · 04/04/2021 08:45

@pickaxer

I love it when people say * They've been in shops for months. From 99p in ALDI. *

I don't live near an Aldi, I'd have to get 2 buses to get to one. The nearest LIDL I know how to get there by car, but not bus, it would be hard as it's a different county.

I get a taxi for click and collect once a week to my nearest Tesco with my baby. I didn't think of nipping into the supermarket for eggs as that would add more money to the taxi fare due to waiting time. I try not to go to local convenience stores as so much more expensive.

Plus there's been this pandemic thing, but I've obviously been the only one not shopping loads. Life is harder when you can't afford a car. I'd try to win the lottery, but it's quite a costly pastime these days

Oh come on just add one to your shopping order !! Not rocket science
CricketClub · 04/04/2021 08:46

@Soubriquet

Happy zombie Jesus day!
I’m not religious at all but know that Easter is the most important date on the Christian calendar for many so I don’t think it’s fair to take the piss.

Easter Sunday, the day Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ—the holiest day of the year in many denominations. ... The sacrifice of Christ — crucifixion, death and resurrection — is central to the salvation of man.

People get slated for mocking other religions so why should it be ok for Christianity?

Anyway... back to the eggs!

Flowers24 · 04/04/2021 08:51

For most it's about chocolate and not religion!

midnightstar66 · 04/04/2021 08:55

Sorry but this made me giggle, it's so true 😆. Explaining why all these complicated ways won't work for you when you can just add a £1.50 egg to your regular weekly shop 🤷🏼‍♀️😆

CricketClub · 04/04/2021 08:55

For me without a doubt but definitely not everyone.
Flowers24 · 04/04/2021 08:56

I know !! I'm laughing too

Benjispruce2 · 04/04/2021 08:59

For many more all around the world it’s about religion not chocolate consumerism. Have some respect for people’s beliefs!

dividedwefall · 04/04/2021 09:01

For those laughing at the 'exhausting comment' from another poster - it was in response to me saying that I couldn't be bothered to start giving Easter eggs to everyone.

Because yet another mindless gift-giving chore where I have to worry about which ones to give, getting the right chocolate, it being not too cheap so I over spend to compensate, making sure people have equal value eggs lest they think I like one adult less than another blah bah blah.

I find it exhausting enough to choose Christmas and birthday presents for people so I wouldn't want to voluntarily and unnecessarily add to that annual misery.

IpanemaNova · 04/04/2021 09:01

I did add eggs to my shopping order. They were missing items.

I’m late buying them this year as I’m packing to move house.

My dh went round the shops, nothing.

Anyway my kids have a bar of dairy milk and they were ok about it this morning and I have some truffles.

Still sneer away.

Onedropbeat · 04/04/2021 09:02

It’s a celebration that predates Christianity anyway

They just adopted the spring calendar festival of Ostara

The eggs symbolising new beginnings and regrowth

Benjispruce2 · 04/04/2021 09:03

I am aware of that but it’s not ok to trash religious beliefs regardless of their origin.
