To think i'll be judged with a private numberplate?

I bought a used car recently, & the seller had a private plate on it which he didn't want to keep so it stayed on the car.
I don't really care about it & it doesn't appear to mean anything - it's just a standard 6 digit age-hiding plate.

Do you think I will get judged for having a car with a private plate? Seen as snobby? Do you judge?

YABU = yes

It will cost me about £80 or so to remove it & revert to the standard one I think.

Nope. I see them everywhere and only really notice when they spell a proper word.

emilyfrost · 02/03/2021 16:30

Who cares whether people judge? What does it matter?

I have a private number plate of my initials and I love it.

lightand · 02/03/2021 16:31

I think you will be judged.

How much is the actual numberplate worth?

Vallmo47 · 02/03/2021 16:31

I couldn’t care less. :)

SquatBetty · 02/03/2021 16:32

I wouldn't notice unless it spelt out a word - those word ones are the height of naffness

DynamoKev · 02/03/2021 16:32

I had a car that came with one once - I don't think anyone noticed.

What might get you noticed is if you are one of those throbbers that re-arranges the fucking thing so there's an "X" on it's own at the end or some shit like that. Tools.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 02/03/2021 16:33

Who cares? Is the value of selling the plate worth the faff? I wouldn't judge you unless it spelled something wanky.

IHaveBrilloHair · 02/03/2021 16:35

Probably but who cares?
I'd love one and I'm not bothered what anyone would think.
My money, my car, my choice.

Happytentoes · 02/03/2021 16:35

Only judged on mumsnet and only by some. It won’t change the way you drive which is really all that people should be concerned by.
Save your money

Redglitter · 02/03/2021 16:36

You'll get people on here who will judge you and people who have and love private plates.

Why bother what people think? I certainly wouldn't be paying £80 to change though

I've got a private plate and I love it and don't care in the slightest if anyone judges me for it. Its noones business

VestaTilley · 02/03/2021 16:36

I don’t think they’re seen as snobby, I think they’re seen as a bit nouveau riche/try hard.

But I wouldn’t worry about changing them if it’ll cost you to do so. Save yourself the money on changing plates or spend it on a new outfit/a good takeaway and some wine.

Purplecatshopaholic · 02/03/2021 16:41

Who cares. I have a private plate and think they are fine. Others don’t like them. If you don’t want to spend the money just leave it on

GreenlandTheMovie · 02/03/2021 16:42

Honestly, who cares?

Cowmilk · 02/03/2021 16:43

Dm has bought a used car with private number plate, it increased her insurance premium. At least according the lady on the phone. Why? I don’t know. By how much? I don’t know that either.

B33Fr33 · 02/03/2021 16:44

Not snobby, but then yes, such a person probably wouldn't like my car that I carefully maintain and keep going - so.ply because it's old. But private plates are something I associate with people who value the cost of something over it's quality and expect onlookers to be impressed that they've got money spend. I only have money to spend if I leave it in the bank. A lot of people WONT like them because they need to show off their car is new just to feel ok with themselves! Sad really.

NVision · 02/03/2021 16:44

Why do you care? As long as it doesn't spell TW4T or similar

applespearsbears · 02/03/2021 16:45

This exactly
PurBal · 02/03/2021 16:46

I don't like them. But I don't consider them snobby, quite the opposite in fact.

Flowerlane · 02/03/2021 16:47

Initials are fine but when people have silly ones that make silly words/names to stand out then yes I do judge. Think it’s because in my experience they are usual idiot drivers trying to be flash. Grin

Laissonslesjoliesfemmes · 02/03/2021 16:47

I think they're incredibly tacky but I also recognise that's entirely my concern. I'd hate to think someone who wanted a private number plate cared (or knew) what I thought. We don't all have to like the same things!

TheQueef · 02/03/2021 16:47

I bought a car with plate 30 years ago and kept the plate for ease of memory.
I don't care if anyone thinks I'm naff they probably think I'm called Maxine too.

NurseButtercup · 02/03/2021 16:49

Please stop worrying about the thoughts of strangers.

EssentialHummus · 02/03/2021 16:49

wouldn't notice unless it spelt out a word - those word ones are the height of naffness

This for me too. D 5M1TH etc... good lord why? I’m not a judgmental person generally but just... why would you?

RoseyOldCrow · 02/03/2021 16:50

It's definitely worth making enquiries to find out the value - if it's meaningfully more than the cost of the original, get it swapped Grin

Otherwise, nobody else's business what plate is on your car - ignore anyone who thinks it is!

RedGoldAndGreene · 02/03/2021 16:50

Depends if it spells out a real word.

Teen DD's car came with a private plate. 3 letters followed by 4 numbers. The 3 letters don't make a real word which might make a difference but no judgement from her friends.
