To think i'll be judged with a private numberplate?

I bought a used car recently, & the seller had a private plate on it which he didn't want to keep so it stayed on the car.
I don't really care about it & it doesn't appear to mean anything - it's just a standard 6 digit age-hiding plate.

Do you think I will get judged for having a car with a private plate? Seen as snobby? Do you judge?

YABU = yes

It will cost me about £80 or so to remove it & revert to the standard one I think.

Mine’s initials and was a present. You don’t forget the number plate, which makes things a bit easier.

DynamoKev · 02/03/2021 16:51

@EssentialHummus

wouldn't notice unless it spelt out a word - those word ones are the height of naffness

This for me too. D 5M1TH etc... good lord why? I’m not a judgmental person generally but just... why would you?

Exactly
Nnameechanged · 02/03/2021 16:53

I think they're tacky, but plenty people don't. If it were me, I'd only take it off if I could sell it for a decent amount, if not I'd probably leave it.

ShipshapeShore · 02/03/2021 17:01

I don't like ones that try to spell out the model of car because I don't really get it. We had a citroen saxxo nearby with a plate like 5A8XX0 or something and it just looked odd to me. I know several people with initial ones and think they're OK, quite handy because I know it's them so I can wave! I do quite like it if I am in traffic behind ones like 5US8N because I always say "Good morning Susan" Grin

I should think an orange colour Vauxhall Mokka would be fairly distinctive even without the numberplate.

Yes, some people will judge. But, they're definitely not snobby!! I would have thought the exact opposite. Just a bit cringe.

Alexandernevermind · 02/03/2021 17:32

Most of my family have them with their initials, they are fine, no one cares. The one I always snigger at has a first name and the persons age, as it was a gift for a significant birthday. Why not personalise your vehicle?

ohwaitthatwasme · 02/03/2021 17:34

Dm has bought a used car with private number plate, it increased her insurance premium. At least according the lady on the phone. Why? I don’t know. By how much? I don’t know that either.

Are you sure her premium didn't increase because she was changing car? I have never been charged any more when I have changed registration.

IHaveBrilloHair · 02/03/2021 17:34

I think they're tacky, I still want one!Grin

Botanicals · 02/03/2021 17:36

I think they are great and it’s one in the eye to the hyacinth brigade who wheel out the fish knife poem at every opportunity Grin

candycrushsaga · 02/03/2021 17:37

I personally have nothing against private number plates unless I would think your a knob if you had B055 on it lol other than that, I don't pay attention unless the number plates letter/digits are in bold or mean something funny.

ReverendRicketyCricket · 02/03/2021 17:37

Was it this one?

To think i'll be judged with a private numberplate?
Bythemillpond · 02/03/2021 17:40

Does anyone care?

I think most people have enough shit going on their life to even bother having an opinion.

I would judge the person who judges

Alexandernevermind · 02/03/2021 17:41

@IHaveBrilloHair I think they are tacky but still want one too, just so people don't know how old my car is - I'm just too tight fisted to pay for one. Grin

TheRedBalloon · 02/03/2021 17:41

Neighbour has a BMW X5. Number plate is X5 *. Think its naff but it'd be boring if we all liked the same things!

Confusedandshaken · 02/03/2021 17:42

I'll judge you but you won't ever know. Don't spend your money trying to control the unknown thoughts of random strangers.

sanityisamyth · 02/03/2021 17:42

@RedGoldAndGreene

Depends if it spells out a real word.

Teen DD's car came with a private plate. 3 letters followed by 4 numbers. The 3 letters don't make a real word which might make a difference but no judgement from her friends.

Are you sure it wasn't an Irish plate?

sunnydaleslayer · 02/03/2021 17:44

Judged by who and for what?

My mum inherited a personalised number plate when she bought her car. Thought nothing of it.

I think they are all pretty tragic but seeing X5 NNN on an obviously much cheaper car makes me chortle a bit - X5 had to go back did it?

Oh yes, this, they are insecure enough to be bothered about what other people do.
IHaveBrilloHair · 02/03/2021 17:45

@alexandernevermind
Mine will be brand new because its a motability car
Grin

mummyh2016 · 02/03/2021 17:45

Only on MN have I known people think they're tacky Hmm

I'm in Northern Ireland, all cars first registered here are 3 letters followed by the number so AIL 1000 would be the 100th car registered in that county... AIL being Fermanagh

Botanicals · 02/03/2021 17:47

The Queen has one, the tacky show off that she is.

Nanny0gg · 02/03/2021 17:50

I think they're a criminal waste of money (I admit to being very unreasonable about them) but as it will cost you more to change it you might as well keep it.
