To think i'll be judged with a private numberplate?

I bought a used car recently, & the seller had a private plate on it which he didn't want to keep so it stayed on the car.
I don't really care about it & it doesn't appear to mean anything - it's just a standard 6 digit age-hiding plate.

Do you think I will get judged for having a car with a private plate? Seen as snobby? Do you judge?

YABU = yes

It will cost me about £80 or so to remove it & revert to the standard one I think.

@mummyh2016

Only on MN have I known people think they're tacky Hmm
what's wrong with being tacky? And who cares what others think.

There will ALWAYS be someone offended, miffed, jealous or criticising. Who has time to bother about them?

Do what you like.

Northern Ireland is still Irish

Nope. Ireland is a country, we're talking about Irish number plates. Northern Ireland is in the UK and has UK number plates. It's not in the country of Ireland.

It's not pedantry to point out when people confuse 2 different countries.
To be clear:
Ireland, country in the EU.
Northern Ireland, part of the Uk, not in the EU.
Different countries.
Not same number plates on cars.
Hope that helps.

zingally · 04/03/2021 13:44

I used to work for the DVLA, and was amazed by how much hassle a personalised plate often caused... A lot more than they are worth!

Saying that OP, you can find out if your plate is worth anything (many are!) and flog it on. You'd cover the costs of doing so.

DillonPanthersTexas · 04/03/2021 13:46

Most of the time I barely notice a private plate but I did have a special contempt for those try hard plates a few years back that would use a certain font or a strategically placed attachment bolt to try and spell a name or world. They just screamed weapons grade twat.

VinterKvinna · 04/03/2021 13:52

Interesting Facts;
K1 NGS sold for £185,000 (Via auction Dec 1993), then DVLA released K11 NGS for £144 (Via select registrations during the same decade).
B16 POO made £10,010 during an online DVLA number plate auction (May 2020).

@BigTastyMmmmmm

I don't like them much but bought my sons one each on their cars when they were 17, to hide the age of their first cars. Things like X900 and their initials. Cost about £200. They were thrilled!

I remember seeing that lead singer from E17 (high baseball cap on his head, can't remember his name) in a Mercedes convertible with
BO11 OXS or some such brilliance as his number plate. Suited him. 😁

You mean Brian Harvey? The one who ran himself over with his own Mercedes ?
BigTastyMmmmmm · 04/03/2021 14:07

@DynamoKev Yes that's the guy. Lol

@AtSwimTwoBerts

Of course Northern Ireland is Irish. The clue’s in the name.
You do realise a person can be Irish and be born in Northern Ireland, don’t you?

You can hold both Irish and U.K. passports too, imagine that? Grin

shoofly · 04/03/2021 14:29

@AtSwimTwoBerts

Are you sure it wasn't an Irish plate?

Irish plates are not 3 letters and 4 numbers!

Northern Irish ones are
BluebellCockleshell123 · 04/03/2021 14:32

I’d love a private number plate - I might be able to remember it if it never changed!

Things from Northern Ireland are very much Irish.

PP didn't specify whether southern or Northern Ireland. Her Northern Ireland plate is still Irish.

Someone's got a chip on their shoulder I think Grin

AtSwimTwoBerts · 04/03/2021 14:39

Of course it isn't in this context. Irish number plates are plates from the COUNTRY CALLED IRELAND, not the ISLAND CALLED IRELAND.

Northern Ireland is not part of the country called Ireland.

You do realise a person can be Irish and be born in Northern Ireland, don’t you?

You can be Irish and be born anywhere, actually, but neither point means NI is in the country of Ireland. As it isn't.

Honestly, its embarrassing to have to state this.

AtSwimTwoBerts · 04/03/2021 14:40

No it isn't.

AtSwimTwoBerts · 04/03/2021 14:40

Also, not southern Ireland. That's Cork and Kerry etc

lottieree · 04/03/2021 14:42

Honestly, its embarrassing to have to state this.

That's really not what you should be embarrassed about.

Pippa234 · 04/03/2021 14:42

Someone I know bought a car once with a private plate he sold the plate for £450 online, he hadn't paid much more than that for the car!
It wasn't anything special either.

AtSwimTwoBerts · 04/03/2021 14:48

No, you should be.
How is that so many people can't understand that Ireland is a distinct country that does not include Northern Ireland.
Different laws, different currencies, different governments, different everything, and yet people still bleat on "Its still Ireland!".
Didn't the whole Brexit border thing give you a clue, if nothing else did?

Mintjulia · 04/03/2021 14:50

Who cares what anyone else thinks?

If anyone remarks on it, just look at them blankly, say 'what number?' and walk off.

Itsokthanks · 04/03/2021 14:51

If it doesn't spell anything I probably wouldn't notice it. I know what you mean though, I'd be tempted to change it. I don't think anyone would think it's snobby, personalised plates are more of a tacky thing. I'd feel embarrassed having one but if it's nothing too obvious it seems a waste of money changing it.

lottieree · 04/03/2021 14:54

Ok then, so what do you call something that was made in Northern Ireland?

Who gives a hoot what people think about a private plate

SomeRandomerOnBumsnet · 05/03/2021 08:17

@Janegrey333

It’s “nouveau riche” in terms of style. They like ugly new builds too. And grey interiors.
You make no sense. As usual!
AnnaFiveTowns · 05/03/2021 09:29

Why can't you sell the plate? Surely it's worth something? Then it's win win. You get some extra cash and you don't have to drive round looking like a twat.
