To think i'll be judged with a private numberplate?

I bought a used car recently, & the seller had a private plate on it which he didn't want to keep so it stayed on the car.
I don't really care about it & it doesn't appear to mean anything - it's just a standard 6 digit age-hiding plate.

Do you think I will get judged for having a car with a private plate? Seen as snobby? Do you judge?

YABU = yes

It will cost me about £80 or so to remove it & revert to the standard one I think.

Depends on the plate. There's an absolute unit near us who's got a really cheap looking vanity plate on a supercar. It's a badly spelled version of the cars make.

He then thrashes the damned thing on the school run. The primary school run.

He's getting judged.

Notabove25 · 03/03/2021 08:56

I think as you describe are fine OP but I really hate the ones that spell a first name, especially when they don't quite spell it. Even worse things like S3XY

I sounds like you might have had a windfall though.

FinallyFluid · 03/03/2021 09:12

Steve Parrish had two horrible ones.

What is the story behind the registration number on your car?

I’ve got two registration plates, PEN15 and 60CK. For dirty minded people, these appear to say something… They were originally purchased when I was married to stop my wife driving my cars.

Saz12 · 03/03/2021 09:15

I do notice if I’m the passenger on long boring journey. I probably wouldn’t notice otherwise (Im not into cars and generally don’t look at reg numbers, but maybe there just aren’t many of them round here?).

I always imagine they were a gift, or bought to hide age of car, or boy racer type (of either sex or age!). They’re much less ostentatious than many cars are. I’d not spend anything on replacing it.

Rillington · 03/03/2021 09:30

DVLA should change it for you for free.

Exhausted4ever · 03/03/2021 09:42

Snobby!? Couldn't be further from it if it tried lol. Very tacky

herewegoagainst · 03/03/2021 09:50

I love mine, there are only so many times in life you can insert a bit of fun and whimsy.

It's my initials random number and abbreviation of my name though so probably considered tacky by the mumsnet vipers!

DH thinks it's an Essex thing to have them, most of our friends and family have them as well so there might be something to that...

TrickyD · 03/03/2021 09:50

@mummyh2016

Only on MN have I known people think they're tacky Hmm
Of course they are tacky. I bet you have one, mummy2016.

OP, it won’t make you look snobby, but it will make you look a prat.

Ikora · 03/03/2021 09:52

The worst I have ever seen was on an incredibly large car, Range Rover type size , cant think of the make. It had a paint job that’s gave it multicoloured sparkly paint but in a subtle way and a plate that alluded to the fact the owner was very wealthy.

Two of my neighbours have personalised number plates. The road I live on is expensive. They aren’t close friends of mine but they are nice and one helped me out a few years ago collecting dc from school after I had an operation as her sons were at the same school. They are people that are from poor backgrounds who have done well, nouveau riche I suppose.

I just think they are a waste of money.

ChinookPilotsGoVertical · 03/03/2021 10:00

What is a "private plate"? It's a standard plate from DVLA that coincidentally has a significance to the person who owns it.
If your plate is a standard 6 character "123 ABC" type plate it just means that the plate was first issued in the 50s (I think). Before that came 4 numbers + 2 letters. Age defining plates started with "A" suffixes in 1963. Prior to that the age wasn't definable from the plate.
I wouldn't think anyone would even think it was a private plate. Most people would probably consider a private plate to be something like Jimmy Tarbuck's COM1C or Paul Daniels' MAG1C.
Keep the plate & spend the £80 on champagne!

lottieree · 03/03/2021 10:09

You don't have to pay £80 to have it removed. This fee is to put a private plate on retention, which would mean you being issued with a retention document and keeping ownership of the private number.

You can simply write to the DVLA and enclose your V5 and ask for the plate to be removed and an age related number issued. There is no charge for this although you would need to pay for new plates to be made which would be around £15.

wendywoopywoo222 · 03/03/2021 10:13

I've kept one that was on a car I bought 25 years ago, it's been on many vehicles since and I don't care if anyone thinks it's naff.

It's not even my name.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 03/03/2021 10:22

Not snobby as others have said - a bit tacky and “more money than sense”.

However it would actually cost you money to get rid of this, so I wouldn’t. No one is going to be that bothered - probably won’t even notice most of the time!

Elai1978 · 03/03/2021 15:44

The best one I have noticed (and that's only because it was outside school everyday) was DOG P00

I’m guessing you’re not in the UK?

nokidshere · 03/03/2021 16:07

@Elai1978 yes I am why?

Elai1978 · 03/03/2021 16:24

yes I am why?

Not a valid plate and god knows what they’ve bastardised to spell that

SomeRandomerOnBumsnet · 03/03/2021 16:30

Who gives a shit. I love mine, on my Land Rover, MN hates me Grin

Sentences would help. Confused
nokidshere · 03/03/2021 16:33

@Elai1978 who knows 🤷🏼‍♀️ I don't care, I don't like them it just made me laugh.

My son just pointed out that he thinks it was DO6 PO0

MrsExpo · 03/03/2021 16:33

I have a personal plate on my car. It’s been on every vehicle I’ve owned for many years and I really couldn’t give a toss if people judge me for it. Seriously ..... who cares?

SomeRandomerOnBumsnet · 03/03/2021 16:34

@Ikora

nouveau riche ? most private plates are about 250 quid, hardly Lottery winning sums Grin
Iamnotminterested · 03/03/2021 16:35

Can't understand why people pay to have them, and I mean this genuinely - what is the appeal?

Janegrey333 · 03/03/2021 16:36

Number plates like that are tacky. People use them so that no one can tell the age of the car. It’s quite tragic.

Iamnotminterested · 03/03/2021 16:37

Is it to help you find your car in a crowded car park? Confused

Janegrey333 · 03/03/2021 16:38

It’s “nouveau riche” in terms of style. They like ugly new builds too. And grey interiors.
