To think i'll be judged with a private numberplate?

I bought a used car recently, & the seller had a private plate on it which he didn't want to keep so it stayed on the car.
I don't really care about it & it doesn't appear to mean anything - it's just a standard 6 digit age-hiding plate.

Do you think I will get judged for having a car with a private plate? Seen as snobby? Do you judge?

YABU = yes

It will cost me about £80 or so to remove it & revert to the standard one I think.

I’m another one who wouldn’t notice unless it’s a word. And even then I wouldn’t bother judging so they are wasted on people like me.

Shodan · 02/03/2021 19:00

So long as it's properly registered. A lot of private plates aren't, which make them illegal, and you could be stopped and fined and told to change them back.

Personally I wouldn't think twice about it- so many people have private plates now that it's fairly commonplace.

peak2021 · 02/03/2021 19:02

I'm probably more likely to judge the car not the number plate.

DdraigGoch · 02/03/2021 19:04

If I see one, I probably do associate it with boy racers and bad driving. I may also assume that the owner has more money than sense. If I bought a second hand car with one on, I certainly wouldn't waste £80 to change it though. Does what I think affect the owner? How could it, they wouldn't even know what I was thinking.

@mummyh2016

Only on MN have I known people think they're tacky Hmm
Hmm I would disagree. I have come across plenty of people in real life who think they are naff. Afraid I'm with them.
flakymate · 02/03/2021 19:07

I generally wouldn’t notice - they’re so commonplace.

I tend to think people get private plates to hide how old their car is😂 just cause one of my mates did

DoubleTweenQueen · 02/03/2021 19:08

Don't bother spending £80 to re-register it. Who cares if busy-bodies judge your plate x

vixeyann · 02/03/2021 19:08

Mine was a present from my husband. I haven't put it on my current car but really should. I don't think people care these days - many people have them and I'm not driving a supercar that people are likely to give a second glance!

FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 02/03/2021 19:09

I wouldn't judge someone but I personally think they are tacky as hell.
Who cares though what other people think - life is too short to worry about what people think of you Smile

nokidshere · 02/03/2021 19:26

Unless it spelled a word I'd never even notice, and even then probably only if I was sat behind it at the lights. Seriously don't waste your money, no one really cares about this stuff except on here.

The best one I have noticed (and that's only because it was outside school everyday) was DOG P00

Mine makes mine look older than it is (unintentionally). 🤷🏻‍♀️
MiddlesexGirl · 02/03/2021 19:59

I don't care what other people think. But I do care what I think .... which is that personalised number plates are tacky. So I'd definitely get rid.

WTF99 · 02/03/2021 19:59

I would judge you....yes

So sick of sexism around cars. I drive a high performance car. I have advanced and racing licences. Never had any points or accidents.

Someone comments “don’t expect a woman to get out of a car like that” almost daily. And plenty sidle up to me at the lights and show surprise at the middle aged female - briefly: I’m a few hundred metres past the line by the time they’ve found 1st gear.

HeronLanyon · 02/03/2021 20:02

Don’t notice unless it spells a word or similar or is on stunning car.
Not sure anyone would think snobby anyway many in mn think they are naff ! Depends what you mean by ‘snobby’ I guess.

Planty13 · 02/03/2021 20:12

I judge private plates Blush I also wouldn’t pay to swap out a private plate 🤷🏼‍♀️ Don’t worry about it OP

Standrewsschool · 02/03/2021 20:13

I’d keep it unless if it looks okay, and change it if it were a naff looking one.

NetballHoop · 02/03/2021 20:16

We bought a second hand car with Northern Irish plates that began GIL and four numbers. I am not, and as far as I know no one in my family has ever been known as Gill.

The only issue we ever had was people (mostly mechanics at the MOT centre) calling me Gill.

DropDTuning · 02/03/2021 20:16

I don't drive. I think they're a bit wanky, but honestly I wouldn't give it a second thought if I knew you

I judge those who speed and those who drive their kids without car seats.

Dipi79 · 02/03/2021 20:22

They're not seen as 'snobby' at all; quite the opposite in fact!😂🤣

Daphnise · 02/03/2021 20:42

These plates are a lower class thing, my dear!

LynetteScavo · 02/03/2021 20:46

It will cost about £80 to change it, but obviously you could sell it. I'd definitely be finding out how much it's worth.

TheQueef · 03/03/2021 08:46

Yknow these lower class things, they can turn up trumps.
Mine's five digits and I've been offered high four figures.
Not bad really considering the car it came on cost £750 (RIP pink peril cincequento)

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 03/03/2021 08:49

If you really need to know why not take a poll as you drive around, put a sign on your car saying “honk if you think my reg is naff”

Who cares and how would you ever know what strangers driving past you think Confused

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 03/03/2021 08:52

I wouldnt notice
