To think i'll be judged with a private numberplate?

FurierTransform · 02/03/2021 16:28

I bought a used car recently, & the seller had a private plate on it which he didn't want to keep so it stayed on the car.
I don't really care about it & it doesn't appear to mean anything - it's just a standard 6 digit age-hiding plate.

Do you think I will get judged for having a car with a private plate? Seen as snobby? Do you judge?

YABU = yes

It will cost me about £80 or so to remove it & revert to the standard one I think.

Are you sure it wasn't an Irish plate?

Irish plates are not 3 letters and 4 numbers!

AtSwimTwoBerts · 04/03/2021 12:07

Only on MN have I known people think they're tacky hmm

No, you know people in RL who think they are tacky. It's only on MN that people will actually tell you.

You will be judged, yes, but do you care? I bought a car with a meaningless private number. I didn't care enough about judging to pay for it to be changed. If you care to the tune of £800 then get it changed.

Acovic · 04/03/2021 12:39

I think they are a bit try hard.

Having said that I'm buying one for my car as it reminds me of my Dad who died recently.

BillMasen · 04/03/2021 12:41

Nice simple non age related one (3 numbers 3letters) is fine. I’d have one. I like them

One that needs to be mid-spaced to vaguely look like a word/name. Nah really bad

PinkSpring · 04/03/2021 12:48

I don't like the ones that try to spell something - they always look a bit weird.

Ones that just mean something to the owner, don't see the problem. If people want to spend the money - it's their choice.

We have one, it means nothing to anyone else, they probably just see it as random letters and numbers. When we get a new car, we will pay the £80 to transfer it over.

VintageStitchers · 04/03/2021 12:52

Why would you care about what random folk think?
Do you all live your lives desperate to be considered cool?

I’m in my fifties and have lived my life since being a teen not giving a stuff about the opinions of others, especially people I don’t even know.

@AtSwimTwoBerts. Northern Irish plates were usually 3 letters then 4 numbers and plenty of people on the U.K. mainland buy them privately for their cars.

Number plates in the Republic are totally different. Is this what you’re getting confused with?

BigTastyMmmmmm · 04/03/2021 12:52

I don't like them much but bought my sons one each on their cars when they were 17, to hide the age of their first cars. Things like X900 and their initials. Cost about £200. They were thrilled!

I remember seeing that lead singer from E17 (high baseball cap on his head, can't remember his name) in a Mercedes convertible with
BO11 OXS or some such brilliance as his number plate. Suited him. 😁

Supmama · 04/03/2021 12:53

The are tacky but not worth worrying about though

PeonyBetta · 04/03/2021 13:15

I'd keep it over paying to actively change it unless it was really shit or tried to spell something out that was weird.

There is a mum at school who is always dropping digs about my plate. I have no idea why it bothers her. It literally spells my name and it was a present on my first car for my 17th. I have it on ever car I've had and is now on my new 20 plate car. I wouldn't buy it myself as it probably worth a lot but I wouldn't not use it because of what people think.

Private plates can be a decent investment. DH has two, and specialist dealers are more interested in the plates than the cars. They've tripled in value in seven years: no other investment (of ours) has done as well. But, generally, I am not a fan.

AtSwimTwoBerts · 04/03/2021 13:21

Your Irish plate is not 3 letters followed by 4 numbers. None of them are. (unless its a vintage plate, in which case the comparison didn't make sense anyway)
Irish plates are year (now with 1 or 2 added), county origin, then number of registration in order. So 07-D-78521 or 201-C-235.

Apologies Mine is Northern Irish
AtSwimTwoBerts · 04/03/2021 13:27

So, not Irish then. A UK plate.

Linnet · 04/03/2021 13:29

My neighbour has a private number plate on her car. I do judge her, but not because of the number plate.

I couldn’t care less what she has on her car, but I judge her because she doesn’t park on her driveway she parks across it at the narrowest part of the street making it difficult for others to get past.

orchidsonabudget · 04/03/2021 13:31

People are judging you every day. Oh all sorts of things.
Your shoes. Your handbag (or lack of it)
The brand of car. Your haircut.
That's before they come into your house and see whether you have a toilet brush and whether you are a shoes on or off house and whether you put your handbag on your kitchen counter or not

So much judging.
Enjoy your personalised plate

Crappyfridays7 · 04/03/2021 13:31

Just drive the car
Who cares

I stand corrected but there really was no need for the come back. I did apologise.
AtSwimTwoBerts · 04/03/2021 13:34

Sorry. Spiky today Wink

Northern Irish plates are 3 letters and 4 numbers. They are a different format to the rest of the UK.

Northern Ireland is still Irish.

Pedant.

I love my private plate and the vehicle it’s on. I care not what others think
